No interest in playing the games, but why does the movie need normal soldier dudes stumpling into this parallel world?
Why can't it just be a new hunter team (with Mila) setting out?
This seems unneeded.

The parallel normal soldiers bits is dumb, yeah. The monsters do look cool though.

Sometimes I really wish Hollywood in particular would get forced to actually stick to SOME of the source material when they make films. I mean they got some monsters in it, but other than that it doesn't seem like there's anything of the source material in this.

It just annoys me somewhat since they are so blatant with their title grabbing.

I know ZERO about the source property but the trailer looked impressive..

My overriding concern as I watched it, was not "oh those soldiers are gonna get munched" but instead was "where will they find gas to keep the vehicles running"

at least the CGI isn't terrible

Well, I had no idea this was coming and seems like good fun.

IMHO, Milla is one of the most under rated actresses in recent years, although her usual roles do not give her much to stretch her talent. And, she's simply gorgeous, so there is that, too!

I will see it for sure, even if some aspects of the trailer and the plot seem to go a bit off the rails for me.

Well, it's got the ridiculous oversized weaponry (she definitely gets a set at some point), that's about the only aspect of the game that's memorable to me.

Other than that, cashing in on the current obsession with Isekai anime isn't the worst idea I've seen, especially for a film that seems a blatant power fantasy about dominating monsters with big swords and guns.

How the feth is this guy still getting money to make movies for the sole purpose of putting his wife in the staring role? The last good movie he made was in the 90s XD

Because his films are often found to be enjoyable and people go to watch them and his wife kicking ass so they make plenty of money.

(also why Critics hate them)

Its pretty simple.

Aww shucks. This really is is based on the games, isn’t it? Not many others that have swords and bows looking like that.

To be honest though, I think tossing modern soldiers into the mix sounds kind of cool. Like people have said, it has nothing to do with the games. In a weird way though, taking on those same familiar monsters with modern weaponry in addition to swords and bows, sounds like a good idea. Keeps the world true to form (hopefully), but puts enough of a spin to do something different with the formula (God Eater doesn’t count).

His movies are cheap. He never casts anything above a C-list star at the very most, while still employing actors studios have heard of so they don't get scared off being asked to finance a bunch of nobodies. His films actually make substantial profits because of their relatively low budget and the fact they're just good enough to be distracting for 90 minutes. It's the same principle as Michael Bay movies, just on a smaller scale. Producers and movie studios love that.

New Chinese trailer released. This one actually makes the movie look like Monster Hunter, and slightly more interesting.

The giant silly weapons are unfortunately mandatory.

It does look like fun, though. As long as they keep the battles interesting and relatively quick (but not just jump cuts). The games seem to like 20+ minute boss battles of mindless grind-hacking and dodging.

The movie has a stupidly bad (and not very funny) pun about 'chi-knees' that has gotten hackles really riled over in China. It's actually kind of amazing. It's such a god awful pun and is so remotely unfunny, I'm baffled it made it past the cutting room floor. But stupid kind of defines the director in question, so a stupid joke being in the movie seems par for the course. It's just exploded way up.

It's ironic because the movie is one of those ones where no attempt was made to hide the pandering to the Chinese market in the film. So, they pandered to that market hoping for return (pretty sure monster hunter is pretty popular in China, as it is in most places XD) and ended up losing the market over a stupid pun. You'd think that when they want that market so badly they'll nakedly pander to it, someone would have proposed that the stupid pun might be shooting themselves in the foot.

Have I mentioned how preposterously dumb the pun is? Seriously. It's not even dad joke worthy.

From the article I read, it’s a like ten second scene where two dudes are supposed to be bonding and one asks the other Hey, what kind of knees are these? Chinese! Well that reminded people of an old racist schoolyard rhyme which once they said it I do remember hearing that way back in the day, so it was taken as an insult to China. Then, since it’s a joke based on language and how words sound in English, the subtitles in China changed it to something else, but that just made them feel they were trying to hide the insult from them, and a social media storm was born. Initially they were just going to rerelease the movie with that tiny scene edited out, but then it was completely banned as a warning to future movies that might insult China.

Reminds me of how there is the whole "skeletons aren't allowed in Chinese games" thing with games getting released in China. When in reality there is no legal or moral barrier, but the approval board has used it as a reason before and the approvals are so fickle that many companies bow to even the suggestion of a possible problem just to get in.

Basically China is a huge and grumpy golden goose. If you breach the market you can make an absolute fortune compared to just western markets alone. However its grumpy and just as likely to just throw up a wall and say no over the most tiny of things just as an excuse.

The government is also very keen to promote their own and not allow the west in too much, so you can bet sometimes they just want an excuse not to release something.

Heck they banned Whinny the Pooh over a few internet memes.
