I can;t say as it's too political, but if anyone wants to say what they hope for, let us know.

I second this. I trained at home but I'm not as fit as I was before the pandemic. It's actually a consequence of what I really desire for 2021: to get back to the same quality of life I had until March 2020.

The vaccine. I seriously can’t wait to get mine, and hope enough of the rest of the population don’t fall for Woonatic Misinformstion to create a herd immunity.

Because I too am utterly sick of lockdown, and not being able to just bimble my Merry way through life. Not to mention I’ve not had Alone Time with my girlfriend since 2 December, and it would be really cool if we could just have a regular relationship.

I want to see what long term affects arise from all this, but suspect there won't be many. At least not the kind of positive changes I want to see.

We've had pandemics before, but humanity seems incapable of having that 'learned something today' moment.

I just hope by mid-year we are starting to see vaccines really having an effect and - best case we can have a normalish to normal end of year with no covid fears.

Social media to let go of ascribing all phenomena to the date number of the current year.

Bit depressing seeing so many posts about how they're sure now 2020 has turned into 2021 the problems in their life are going to sort themselves out independently of their actions.

Not just social media. The news is much the same. But realistically, we've got 8-10 months of this crap, assuming the logistics are and stay on track.
And unfortunately the '2020 is over, back to normal' attitude is going to cause more problems.

I don't get the term woonatic?

I can't help remembering the strange but seemingly reality based and plausible theories that the black plague had a massive positive effect on european culture and lead to major positice changes in what would late be known as western culture.

Here's one. https://www.brown.edu/Departments/Italian_Studies/dweb/plague/effects/social.php

The black death may have ended the old serf/lord system and created an actual working class who ate better and had better may and standards of living than their parents and grandparents.

While i don't think covid will have quite that effect, maybe it will lead to positive changes in a lot of things like healthcare, early detection and reaction to new diseases, etc.

But i'm not counting on it...

That I get into the practicum that I'm aiming for in my current career development program and that I get started in a new career as either a job developer or employment counselor.

On the hobby side of things, that the hinted Ork stuff from the rumour engine actually releases this year and that GW takes a much needed break from the SM model tide that doesn't seem to end. Also looking forward to having at least half of my Ork collection fully painted and based. As I currently am about a quarter or third of the way through so far.

I'm hoping for a better quality of life; In March 2020 I was commuting about an hour each way for work and getting sent all over the place to see customers, so I'm hoping to get to remain working from home most of the time and do the customer stuff via Skype.

I've been letting life get in the way of health for far too long, so started cycling over the summer and I'm hoping to keep up with that as soon as the weather improves enough for it. I'm also aiming to spend some of my "commuting time" to go to the gym or something.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

My first hope is that my friends and family manage to get through the next month or two without serious illness or worse.

I have a few members of family who are shielding. Every day the hundreds (if not thousands) who are dying are leaving grieving loved ones behind, and I would rather not have people close to me as another number in that casualty figure. So, it's a case of trying to keep reminding (especially a few older family members who seem to have lost all attitude to risk) and helping out where I can.

Otherwise I hope truth and rationality will win out, and enough people will have been vaccinated (accompanied by the trough following the second wave) to allow some kind of normality over the summer. Being able to get a few games in, see some friends and family in person, and even a holiday abroad somewhere would be nice!

I don't hate them, but I hope there era starts to either pass or advance. I'm tired of 1001 "fast hero intro films" and overloaded movies that try to unit 50 different leads into 1 film. I'd like to see them advance beyond the beginning.

That said I'd love to see fantasy rise up and get a slew of mainstream films.

Yeah, I think we've peaked somewhat now that the whole Thanos arc has been finished, at least movies wise. The spin off shows from Disney Plus seem to be more interesting than what they have to offer theatrically and after the dumpster fire that is WW1984, WB clearly doesn't know what they're doing.

I'd just like more stuff alongside the stuff of Dredd or Mad Max Fury Road if they're going to use existing franchises/IP's. Make them good oneshots that don't need to be tied to an expansive and episodic series.

Unlikely. The main reason the Black Death did that was because it straight up killed 30-60% of the population. Which led to a massive labor shortage which in turn led to higher wages and standards of living which led to the weakening of an already dying feudal system.

Covid isn't going to get anywhere near that, so we're not going to see much if any change. Its not even close to past pandemics in terms of severity. Which is something we need to realize, this is orders of magnitude less bad than what a 'real' pandemic would cause. I'm not intending to minimize what Covid is doing, just put some perspective.

We would need a disease many times worse than Covid to really change how we address pandemics. Even with how inadequate we have realized out response systems are, they are only just barely inadequate for this pandemic. A disease with 30% fatality rate would be something that nobody would have a hope of addressing, but that is the only thing that would lead to total restructuring.

I would like to get a bit healthier. I've quit smoking since September now apart from the odd couple on a night out, and once I'm back commuting it'll be a bit of extra exercise on top of that.

Hope to start some wedding planning. It's not until 2022 and we already have the venue booked so that's (hopefully) the worst of it done.

Being cooped up in lockdown has made me want to travel even more than usual. Best friend and I were planning a trip to Chernobyl in April, when we imagined the whole Covid thing would have died down enough to allow that. That's been scuppered although we hope to go in September if this has calmed down enough. We also hope to do a weekend piss-up in Amsterdam if possible, thanks to a company I found doing return trips for £40.

Edit: I'm also obviously hoping for the vaccine programme to get this under control. I'm a little sceptical about the vaccine, but I think this is general scepticism, nothing at all like the "Bill Gates is putting GPS QAnon trackers in our mindblood!" crap you hear online. To be honest I'm not too fussed when I get mine; I don't really get sick that often so I'd rather it go towards someone who really needs it before me.

I liked WW1984 up until the end twist which was just too cheesy. I won't miss the superhero movie genre if it goes away though. More Dredd would be awesome.

I think we are going to see a big change to how companies manage corporate real estate and travel. They are big expense drivers, and a lot of companies have now learned that you do not need them to be successful.

I do not think all companies will change, but some will. Perhaps we are one step closer to the fabled Results Only Work Environment for pencil pushers and white collar types like me?

However, such a change will also have unintended consequences to our economy and workforce.

It's not just companies - workers have also found the joys of gaining perhaps 2 hours or more a day by cutting out commuting along with saving on fuel and car wear and tear and also the stress of driving itself*. Thing is for many they don't need to be in the office all day every day and if its mostly desk work they can work from home with the odd meeting or day in work to sort things out.

Companies have found that workers will work at home so why have a huge officeblock when staff can work from home and you can rent a few offices for the weekly/monthly meetup etc..

Company saves money and employees save money.

Much of this is change that computers and the internet were "supposed" to bring around a decade or two ago, but it never really got going. If anything it could be a huge boon from Corona IF its kept up

*which has generally increased over the years as roads get more and more congested and road easing methods more complex. Throw in an accident; a delay and bad weather and its a hotbed of stress each day.

However, there is still a strong "intangible" desire to keep workers in the office blocks. The question is if the Dollars and Pounds will actually be a big enough driver this time. Before the Work From Home model was the expensive and risky strategy, and hence slow to be adopted. That mind set may have changed a lot now that the shoe is on the other foot.

Companies generally do not care about what makes their employees life easier UNLESS they are losing/can not attract enough talented employees at a high enough rate to make it matter in efficiency, hiring and on-boarding costs.

I wouldn't mind if the Results Only Work Environment actually stuck this time!

I work for a huge multinational who has really embraced work from home over covid. It was allowed before but was meant to be occasional but it's looking like it's something that'll stay long term.

I can see a lot of people going down a similar route where they keep the offices (maybe slightly smaller) and have staff work say 3 days at home and 2 in the office, with more flexible desk arrangements and so on.

I also know of a train buddy of mine who's employer closed their office (they were about to move anyway) and just has the staff working from home, but it was an office unit with maybe 10 staff Vs the 100 we have.

Working from home is awesome, but Zoom is no replacement from water cooler talk and being in the same room as the rest of your team.

It'll be great for the staff (less commuting, more flexibility) and great for the environment since it'll mean reduced car journeys.
