Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo! The long awaited appearance of Tom Bombadil is just around the corner as it has been announced for Rings of Power Season 2! Truly a time for fans to squeal with delight, but not to much, or you may pee yourself a little. What a glorious day!

I bet you just can't wait, can you?

Spoiler:
Vanity Fair had the original article but they want you to pay so "no" to sharing them as a source.

Christ. I struggled my way through Rings of Power. Decent actors, mostly lovely visuals, but god the script was god awful.

The Orcs looked cool, at least.

Can't believe they did a show about the Appendices to LOTR and it wasn't just The Adventures of Young Aragorn.

Tom Bombadil will definitely not get me to watch this, no matter how bright blue his jacket is.

Ah yes, the character that changed the way I thought of LOTR

…for the worse.

I just hope he comes in and kills the series’ momentum and makes it impossible for the audience to take the rest of it seriously, or he just wouldn’t be Tom Bombadil.

Also, my head canon will be ruined if Goldberry’s face isn’t plastered with that expression Enzyte Bob’s wife always wore.

Thank you for sharing the link I already shared. Sharing the same source will make this news double plus good!

I'm afraid of what they'll do to make Tom into a "modern" fantasy character, and instead of the strange whimsy/otherworldly-ness of the original version of the character, this version will see him grim and serious, and have a scene where he takes out a bunch of Orcs on his own, to "show off his immense power".

Yeah...

My expectations for season 2 were low, but then they go and manage to swan dive into the ground.

You guys aren't excited about the musical episode?

I for one am outraged that his boots are such a subtle shade of yellow. Those should be rubber duck yellow galoshes.

I’ll watch it, but the first season was a hot mess on a lot of levels. I’d say “nowhere to go but up” but we all know things can always get worse.

Been meaning to pick up the first season, but haven't seen it in the HMV stores yet. If it has some Harryhausen'n'Tippet moments with cool creatures then I'll be happy. The standout moments in the LOTR films was the Cave troll, Balrog, Ents, Shelob and the Fell Beasts. The Wraith scenes in Fellowship was another reason to watch them. Gollum was good as well and enjoyed seeing him again in the Hobbit films.

Tom Bombadil I hardly remember from the big-ass book from when I was a kid - I had a lot of trouble taking things in back then, but pretty sure he wasn't annoying or anything. There was also the SNES game where he stops the hobbits from being eaten by the trees, Poetry or singing? I think it was a poem in that case but thats going waaaaaaaaaaay back. Keeping an open mind about him until I get around to watching it.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

If you didn’t find the singing to be the best part of LOTR and The Hobbit, then I have some bad news about Tom Bombadil.

It's alright, Tom's on his way to the Prancing Pony as we speak with a specific ballad in mind...

He drinks a Whiskey drink, he drinks a Vodka drink
He drinks a Lager drink, he drinks a Cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times

I really can't fathom what they'd want to do with him. I can only assume he'll only be in a couple of scenes, being weird.

Any attempt to make him a "main" character just means changing what he is to the point he's just another character with the same name.

Though I suppose they did that to Galadriel last time so it's not likely to stop them.

A slice of life anime with Tom just going to the bar and meeting odd characters would be a nice relaxing watch.

Sorry to be a stick in the mud.

But as someone who grew up when Mary Whitehouse was about?

You….you do know you can just ignore it, yeah? Not do it a watch. Be about your preferred business and that?

It’s not like Amazon has scooped up every copy ever printed of the source material and burnt them, whilst laughing, and sucking their trousers, yeah? Nor have they got a cyber-ice-cream-scoop and removed all your memories and appreciation you have for the books and derivatives there of?

Don’t be Mary Whitehouse. Realise you’ve a choice in what you view, and exercise it. Spend your time finding stuff you do like, rather than setting yourself up to fail by imagining what a show you don’t want to watch might or might not be?

Thats not what the internet is for

But seriously, this shows existence is denying good Tolkien shows from coming out since it is hogging the IP right now. Yes, I can not watch it and I plan on doing exactly that. I can also still be a grognard about it.

Agreed. Also, companies won't stop shovelling this garbage out unless it's spelled out very explicitly both in terms of not giving views/money towards it, as well as highlighting the clear storytelling problems and adaptation issues.

I feel the people who complain about people complaining to be like this:

They came Harambe and I did nothing because I'm not a gorilla.
They came for Ghostbusters and I did nothing because I hadn't watched a GB movie in over 20 years.
They came for Starwars and I did nothing because I stopped caring after Phantom Menace.
They came for Marvel and I did nothing because the MCU died with Iron Man.
They came for comic books and I did nothing because I stopped reading comics when Joe Mad! disappeared after Battlechasers #9.
They came for He-Man and I did nothing because I was part of the TMNT generation.
They came for Indiana Jones and I did nothing because the Crystal Skull was so awful.
They came for Terminator and I did nothing because there are only 2 Terminator movies.
They came for Scooby Doo and I did nothing because I'm not really a big Scooby Doo fan.
They came for the Lord of the Rings and I did nothing because I didn't really care the Hobbit adaptation.
They came for Warhammer and I made memes because I've been around long enough to have seen multiple lore changes and retcons in Warhammer.

Eventually there will be nothing left to enjoy. No where to go but groups that also have nowhere to turn to. If you want to let people enjoy things you need to let people enjoy hating things.

Thinking something was bad is not the same as saying it should be censored. People are allowed to criticise media. The deal these companies make when they take a known story like LOTR is that they get way more interest than they would in their own original fantasy show, but the flip side of that is that the fans who show that interest expect a decent job to be done.

I watched the first season, skeptically, because I am a huge Tolkien fan. I would have been happy with something tolerable, but it was really very bad in my opinion. Me criticising the script is not the same as saying "This is morally wrong and it should be CENSORED!" though I am fed up of mega-corporations like Amazon buying up "properties" and treating them like this. It is wrong to make an adaptation that craps all over the original source material. On the scale of wrongs, it's not very high up there, but in a discussion like this, I'm gonna state my piece.

Ironically, the only person calling for censorship here is you, Mad Dok. You want us to shut up and go away, and stop speaking. I'm not gonna watch the new show, because the last one was painful to watch. If you enjoy it, no worries. Hope you have a great time.
