Warhammer firm Games Workshop reveals plans for new Nottingham factory as part of major expansion

The important city employer, which boasted record-breaking £494 million revenues earlier this year, previously unveiled plans to build a £9 million factory

Warhammer firm Games Workshop has revealed fresh plans for another new Nottingham factory as part of its major city expansion. The manufacturer of the phenomenally popular Warhammer 40,000 miniatures has plotted another part of the expansion of its Lenton Lane business complex in Nottingham.

The important city employer, which boasted record-breaking £494 million revenues earlier this year, previously unveiled plans to build a £9 million factory at its Lenton headquarters. It has now additionally asked Nottingham City Council for permission to set up a facility that will supply paint for the tens of millions of plastic parts manufactured at its three factories, as customer demand from around the world continues to grow.

The new "upgraded and enhanced" paint plant would be set up at Unit 18 of Easter Park, a business park across the road from the firm's HQ, and would play a role in the company's multi-year expansion plan, according to planning documents. Games Workshop's planners added that paint production was an integral part of its manufacturing.

The company would need to construct an area for its machinery, including a 3000-litre tank for paint, fit new windows, doors, and more air conditioning units, as well as creating a shelter for workers. Planning agents said the vast paint vat and other machinery would be hidden behind a large 2.4m gate and security fencing and that waste water would be disposed of at a licensed site.

Games Workshop explained the building's offices were currently in use, but the industrial space inside was vacant. There are currently 13 people working inside the industrial unit, but planning documents suggest the new facility would provide 37 more.

The fitting out of the paint facility would reduce the number of car parking spaces by 17, leaving 23 for workers. The planning application is pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.

Games Workshop submitted plans in August to knock down Nottingham City Council's old transport services depot off Willow Road ahead of the proposed construction of an extra figurine-making plant on the land. More than 350 staff currently work at the site's three existing Willow Road factories to produce millions of the popular figures, with bosses hoping the planned fourth factory will be open by spring 2026.

It will be part of a five-year or longer programme of significant investment in machinery and infrastructure, according to planning documents submitted by the business, which added this would create new manufacturing jobs. The application for this factory is also currently pending planning permission from Nottingham City Council.

When did GW last do in house production of paint? I've not always kept up with things through the years, but I remember back when they originally switched from Coat de Arms as their supplier, and that was back in the early 2000s.

I honestly don’t know. But there’s been rumours for a while they were looking to do it.

I think the move from Cote D’Arms was them paying for their own paint formulas, but having it made elsewhere?

Those were mentioned on a recent Valrak rumour list, as part of a "pro" paint line.

Perhaps they'll arrive alongside the other leaked/previewed paint accessories like the servo skull thing or citadel wet pallette.

As far as I'm aware the already moved production in house, confirmed by Peachy:

Hopefully the new plant doesn't mean the colours change once again...

The newest bottle of GW paint I have, Skavenblight Dinge (absolutely atrocious name) bought about a month ago, has the full Willow Road address on it, followed by "Represented by: Games Workshop Limited - Irish Branch, Unit 3,Lower Liffey Street, Dublin, [string of numbers]."
Does that imply that they're currently getting them made in Ireland?

No, that's simply being used to provide an address in the European Union to avoid post-Brexit issues with being a UK-based company.

As I understand it, the paint is produced in bulk by a third-party supplier (the technology and expertise to actually make the paint itself would be a huge investment, even for GW) and then delivered for bottling in GW's own Nottingham facility.

A quick Google search tells me that Unit 3, Lower Liffey Street, Dublin is just a GW shop, doesn’t look like a factory.

It’s more likely that the Dublin address is just their EU registered address. It’s easier for British companies to export from an EU office than one based in the UK.

I'm not certain what good a single 3000 L tank is going to do them. Unless they plan to make a billion bottles of one color. Then flush it out, wash the tank, and make a billion bottles of the next color. And rinse and repeat.

Could be a divided tank, a cumulative total of multiple tanks, or a process where the medium is all in a central tank with the pigment added during bottling, like a soda fountain.

The tank would be to hold the base (like Contrast Medium) then pigment would be added later through mixing machines

Yeah, ^ this. Its just a shop front. Many UK stores will use an Irish store as their EU registered address to get around Brexit issues. Gw have been using the Dublin store address on their products for a little while now. But it is just a tiny store, no paint being made there, unless they have a yoke for bottling paint kept out back which somehow defies the laws of physics! (The Contrast bottler of Rassilon perhaps!)

No, that address is their legal entitly in Europe, for tax purposes.

It's going to be connected to Bugmans so that you can get Nuln Oil on tap.

I'd guess the tank holds something like undiluted acrylic medium or whatever. Ask a chemical engineer

You say that. But, the wee pots are 18ml. Which means 55.5 to a litre. So at capacity, that’s 166,666 paint pots.

How many do GW distribute a week? I’ve no idea. But, I can tell you they come in packs of six to go on the racks.

So that’s 27,777 retail packs produced per tank load. And honestly? Across all their sales channels (store, FLGS, Online, Online retailers, Wholesalers), that could be a single week’s supply of a given colour.

Its such a wordy article for such a tiny development. 3,000l is 3 cubic metres, which
most people could easily fit in their house (admittedly it would be an annoying obstruction to life )

£9m for an industrial upgrade isn't that much, and its not even creating any new building space, its just refurbishing an existing industrial unit.

The article is so overblown Its not a "new factory" its a fitout of an existing building, the "vast paint vat" is essentially a large bathtub, and I wonder how much of the £9m is actually replacing the external wall and windows to improve thermal performance for the staff "shelter", rather than the actual industrial kit?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

If it’s the building I’m thinking of, it’s new to GW at least. But given it seems to read as them having some kind of office space there, maybe not.

Then again, when Grandad had his print shop, he rented out a couple of offices to Hibs, so could be a bit of both. As in GW use the office space already, but are now expanding to the factory space.

Just to add, I'm not criticising GW's propsoal here, as its great that the company is investing in its infrastructure and creating jobs, etc. Just how the article has been written

Given the state of the UK at the moment, I think the media are just happy to jump on a positive story for once.

I've been using Reaper Master paints since they were release about 20 years ago. I love the pigment content and dropper bottles.

If GW released their paints in dropper bottles, I'd replace my Reaper Master series on release date.
