Title subject to change...

So in the vein of the TV and movie threads, what pod/video casts would you like to review?

Will kick off with

Forgotten Weapons. A fun, bite sized look at the politics, manufacturing and workings of a different firearm in each video, many of which are from the past. Ian presents in a non partisan way (tricky on the US firearms scene), and if you like what he has churned out year after year there is a rabbit hole of similar programmes out there. I have recommended videos to colleagues who need a basic firearms primer. Would say its consistent and that puts it above the other firearms related podcasts out there. (There is a website too and host of written material, but I guess you probably won't read that.)

Perun. An weekly hour long PowerPoint delivered in an Aussie near monotone voice. But honestly its awesome. If you have any curiosity about defence procurement (I feel I am losing you), national military investment strategy, or coverage of Ukraine from a NATO point of view, you will love this. Have recommended certain videos to people at staff college as an accessible 101 on the issue in question.

Do you think Derek at Veritasium does a good job? I again have used his videos as primers on certain topics.

Since it was directly relevant, I’ll paste this here from the TV thread:
I don’t know if long-running Youtube series count as TV, but we’ve been watching through Sam Aronow’s history channel in order, and it is as compelling as a drama. Starting from the Chanukah episode, through the Hasmoneans (with the later dynasty’s Game of Thrones antics), through the I Claudius years to the fall of Rome and beyond. And the personalities only get better defined and more clearly drawn the closer to modern times we get. Highly recommended.

Then at bedtime we throw on a couple of the “baby goats” videos by Sunflower Farms Creamery for that critical sleepy time Awwww.

Anyway, other YouTubers I watch while I clean, exercise or work on models:

Entertainment: RedLetterMedia’s Best of the Worst, some of the funniest people dead inside.
GoodBadFlix, for some in depth looks at movies that are bad yet good.
Honest Trailers and Pitch Meeting.
Charts with Dan Murrell for box office number crunching, movie news and some of the best reviews online.
BadMovieBible, The New Bee and Brandon Tenold when I want to find an obscure and delightful trash movie.

History:
Sam Aronow, Jewish history, especially the periods that aren’t covered in school.
Early Americas, pre-Colombian history of the Americas, most of which was never covered in school.
History With Cy, the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and other obscure ancient civilizations. He loves reading the ancient trash talk between kings.
From Nothing, African History. It’s a bit less in depth than the others so far, often because he ends up spending a lot of time dismantling misconceptions about Africa before he can even get to the history.

Weirder stuff:
Esoterica, a thoroughly scholarly look at the history and practice of occultism, with a small side of snark.
Behind the Bastards, The Dollop, podcasters try to find dark humor in the worst parts of history. If you like black humor, check out their crossover episodes on Henry Kissinger.

You mean Stefan Milo?

And is History with Kayleigh actually good? I always scrolled past when I saw her thumbnails because they reminded me more of the “I’m tending a garden in this skimpy dress” or “I’m a blacksmith in a spaghetti strap tank top” types of videos the algorithm tries throwing my way after those baby goats or Kings of War vids.

I did indeed mean Stefan Milo. Stupid autocorrect.

Kayleigh is indisputably easy on the eye, and her content is solid

Oh, and also Johnny Monroe’s spoof of Coronation Street, the name of which I can’t use on Dakka.

It’s puerile, offensives filth. And despite being a lefty, I love it. And it goes to show “you can’t make that these days” is a big ol’ fib. You might struggle to reach an audience, but nothing is stopping you making this. And no media is entitled to a particular platform.

This used to be on YouTube, but is now Patreon Exclusive.

On the Surface of the Sun aka Florida in the Summer.

Excuse me, as I come from the land that spawned C.S. Goto, I'm not familiar with a lot of your television.

Anything you can recommend, that's not YouTube based?

The Final Experiment.

An expedition to the Antarctic to demonstrate

1) You can in fact go there, and you won’t be turned away at gun point
2) It’s not a sodding Ice Wall
3) There is indeed a 24 hour sun at the right time of year, as predicted by the Globe Model
4) Flat Earthers are full of it.

Originated with Pastor Will Duffy, an America millionaire who financed some of the participants, including two Flerfs.

And they’re there. Right. Now. And the Flerf community is losing its single, very smooth, brain cell that their grift has been completely exposed.

The whole build up has been hilarious, with ever more lies pouring from the mouths of Flat Earth Grifters.

Well worth looking up “The Final Experiment” on YouTube, and following the trail from there.

You can see the 24 hour sun in Alaska. We went to Fairbanks in the summer and the sun was still out at midnight. Didn’t even have to get shot at.

Oh but that’s the North. Or rather, the centre of Flerf.

I’ve been following various Flerf debunkers for around 6 years now, and this is a top notch “you can’t lie about it any longer” stuff.

Is this a British pop-culture reference? I'm so confused.

Not as such.

Flat Earth is a spectacularly moronic belief that “They” are hiding the shape of the world from us, and it’s actually flat.

And it’s get sillier and sillier as it goes.

Uhhh, you know the earth is flat. Just think about it. The earth is 70% water, right? And it's not carbonated, so it's flat.

Spoiler:

Oh that is something they, aha, stick to. But remember, only because there’s no gravity only density and buoyancy.

A) They’re spectacularly thick
B) They’re lying
C) A and B
D) Victims of professional grifters, fallen into an online cult.

No, they have no explanation for the acceleration being down, despite air pressure meaning up is less dense, therefore it can’t just be density and buoyancy.

On the Surface of the Sun aka Florida in the Summer.

My mom always thought Warhammer 40k was a cult.

I guess I shouldn't have showed her the Mechanicus rituals when she asked me to show her how her TV worked.

In all seriousness, I watched a guy who was building a rocket/plane and was going to take pictures of a flat Earth.

I can't remember how it turned out... I assume not well.

Sadly, that guy didn’t survive his last attempt, due to the last attempt.

Suffice to say I’m not making jokes about his fate.

Have link to Professor Dave’s view on The Final Experiment, which is truly superb.

Thanks, I'll check that our when I get home.

I debated a flat earther once. He stormed off saying he'd walk to the edge of the earth to prove me wrong. I'm sure he'll come around...

My two cents are:

SPACE KING!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrZIdiWluyg

A wickedly funny 40k parody cartoon, episode 2 just came out.

Radio War Nerd
https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/t687i-9b79d/War-Nerd-Radio-%E2%80%94-Subscriber-Feed-Podcast

I first started reading this as a column and there were two (??) essay collections, now it's a podcast. Covers wars from ancient times to today, the hosts are a bit Russia-friendly (they spent several years there) but always have something interesting to say.
