We've all had dreams of, "I wish I had army X, or wouldn't it be cool if Army Y was a thing..."

Maybe it's a historically accurate Flames of War 17/21st Lancers Crusader III Tank squadron from the North Africa Campaign? Or a 2,000 point Warhammer 40k Gaunt's Ghosts Tanith army...

I've always wanted a full scale Adeptus Titanicus Army, with Secutarii troops intermingled between the Titans.

If money, time, or skill was of no concern....

What would you select as your dream army?

I always wanted full IG infantry regiment but it's 1000 models minimum + vechicles, support personel, etc. and I can't even imaginate how much storage space i need for this. at minimum it's something like 11k points without nything fancy or vechicles

Not so much an army, but a full complete Mordheim board. I'm talking a 4x4 table properly filled with half ruined building's, scatter terrain. Multiple levels and gangplank connectors that are swappable and modular.

I really just have no place to store it if I did have it. A man can dream though.

It used to be Orks, but I built that up recently. I've often wanted an Inquisitorial army with a mix of Sisters, DW and GK, but GW's support of those elements in 40k is spotty at best. At the moment, I'm pretty happy with my collection and have been more focused on offloading excess so I can focus on getting more play time with my favorites.

The armies I build ARE my dream armies, so my huge nurgle collection, my snakebite orks, a Iyanden-wraith army I want to make, my Oathmark Easterling army and so on.

A project that's only in my head and I probably won't even start would be a full on civilian mob, made of armed peasans, partisans, any kind of Zombie survivors and so on. So, more or less normal people with guns (and other weapons).

Oh, another one heavily depends on my access to 3D printing, but I want to convert all of my STAW Federation and Klingon ships into a united proper scale (about 1:7000 - 1:9000). I already did it for the Dominion and partly for my Romulans.

About a 5k pt Bretonian force for WHFB/Old World.
All properly painted up, detailed, based, with all the assorted heraldry & colors.

I will never paint such a thing myself. And I don't want to spend the $$$ to commission it or buy one of several I've seen over the years that match my expectation....
So that leaves waiting for the gaming Genie to appear & grant me a wish.

I suppose I'd love to get my Celts painted with lots of checks and other tricky freehand on their lovely big shields.

But I am getting to the stage where I own the miniatures for all of my 'dream armies' and just need to build and paint the fecking things!

One thing that I would love to have, as a Dark Angels player and fanboy, would be to have an army of the entire chapter. As in, all ten companies, 1000 guys, plus all their vehicles and stuff. I've already got a good chunk of the Deathwing and Ravenwing, and a little more than one full Battle Company besides, so I'm probably about 33% of the way there already.

Otherwise, I'm already doing a lot of my cool ideas for armies inspired by other fandoms. I've started a Leagues of Votann army whose color scheme(s) are based on the Grineer faction from Warframe, an Imperial Knights army whose scheme is loosely based on a faction from the relatively obscure space game Escape Velocity: Nova, and a Lumineth Realm-Lords army that, once I actually finish some of it, will be painted to look like the various nations from Avatar: The Last Airbender. I've also had my eye on doing a Grand Cathay army for The Old World, and it would likely also be based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, probably focused on just the Fire Nation.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 40 | Current main painting project: Tomb Kings

I do want every necromunda gang right now, I’m actually not sure I have a truly dream army that I cannot achieve as it’s mostly as it gets too big I don’t actually want it anymore.

So, every necromunda gang, and every Mordheim warband is a good dream for me!

Ohh, maybe get every MCP miniature painted up? I’m 50% done there now.

When I was living in London in 199/2000 I met a man with a full chapter of Dark Angels and was in the store when he bought 12 of the new MkII landraider kits to replace his old MkI models.

Baring that I am working my way through my Praetorian IG with close to 100 painted so far and 100+ more general infantry and heavy weapons to go and 50+ models to be used for vehicles/artillery. Hopefully near completion 2028

Yes, this exactly for me as well. It would take years for me to build and paint something like that, but it would be glorious.

@Apple Fox Undead was always my favourite going all the way back to hero quest (it was the scythe wielding skele that hooked my interest), and I must have read the story of Nagash in the undead army book dozens of times when I was young, so I started with the man himself.

I will get too them, just been waiting to settle into a long term home before tackling it seriously. Last thing I bought before leaving gw and undead had just come back and they did loads of bundles with the mortarchs so was actually a lot cheaper to buy than it looks.

I had dream army of a 2nd edition Epic Titan Legion and the equivalent Ork Gargants to slug it out. I had a Titan Legions box but overall missed the boat on the hayday's of Epic. The dream was to build on this boxed set.

One day I popped into a model shop in Bath and came across a small £5 bag of plastic epic Eldar which was about 3-4 boxes worth, all cut and trimmed. Just after this I swapped a 3rd Edition 40k pre-order dog tag for ~1kg of Epic Ork metal vehicles. So I started collecting my dream army and just sort of spiralled from there and accelerated when Ebay turned upon.

I now have a full army of Imperials, Dark Angels, Knights/Titan Legion, Orks, Ork Gargant army, Squats, Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne, a bit of Slannesh, Eldar and Tyranids. In total the armies come to over 120,000 pts all with original 2nd edition army cards of course.

On top of this, along the way, I picked up all the boxed supplements, the Citadel Journals with the extras and the White Dwarfs with something Epic 2nd Edition in them and the Battles book. These I have mostly duplicated with "play" and "keep safe" copies.

This was and still is my dream army. Or rather armies.

Careful what you wish for, it all needs painting!

I'm starting to believe that most people's dream armies juat need to be assembled and painted.

I've wanted to do a Blood Pact army for 40k since first encountering them in the Gaunt's Ghosts books. A couple of years ago I went heavily in on the Damned kickstarter from Wargames Atlantic, which should be arriving soon. Only trouble is I've stopped playing 40k and lost all enthusiasm for the project.

I'd suggest checking out OPR, it reinvigorated my enthusiasm for the 40K universe. I don't play the latest version but it's just a really easy rules light way to play with your dudes that allows for all the customisation and stuff that I expect.

On the topic of building and painting, I've been on a real tear building stuff in my pile of shame and have also painted a tyranid army in september this year. I've got a couple of boxes of 40K stuff and some Mantic Forgefathers left and all my Sci Fi stuff is at least built. My old Ork army does need so much repair and repainting that I suppose it pretty much counts as needing to be built too, but it's absolutely huge so I can actually field a fully intact army out of it, it's just I do want to fully repair it sometime this decade...

I'm noticing a lot of people have giant piles of unpainted armies just sitting around...

I am more than willing to accept your burden and bear your giant piles of unbuilt GW plastic/resin.

I know there is no way to tell, but I've always wondered if there is more unbuilt or built GW product sitting in people's homes.

My dream army is probably the vintage squats I've got sitting unpainted in the garage. I've got everything I need for them figs, tanks, walkers, etc, I just haven't' painted more than a dozen or so.

I'd love to get them on the table for Grimdark Future.

On the unbuilt stuff, I've been collecting miniatures since 1996 and unlike a lot of other people I never took "time off" and sold off my stuff, so I still have almost all of the stuff I bought over that time, and most of it is painted. I was doing alright til GW came out with Start Collecting boxes when I was going through a bad patch in life. I used to buy one every now and then to cheer myself up, and once you have the start collecting you MAY AS WELL get a few extra units to make it a little force...and then maybe a bigger force. And then it all sat in boxes for quite a long while.

But to be fair I've been whacking away at building and painting my stuff, painted roughly an army a year and sometimes more for the last few years and I've been getting games in with them too. But new purchases are on hold for sure! I'm mostly building stuff rapidly now because we've a new baby on the way and I want to clear some space, and built takes up about a third the space of unbuilt.

In my case? Definitely more built.
But I do have a considerable amount of unbuilt.

Now if the question had been painted/unpainted....

I really do not have a "dream army", just the next army I plan on purchasing.

I'm not sure which game or even miniatures, but the Ent March from Lord of The Rings still captures my imagination in a way that makes me want to model and wargame it.

Possibly just angry Ents on their way to Isenguard, or maybe a slightly different take on an angry forest army. Maybe add some other things from Middle Earth. Like entish trees or Beorn.

Unpainted and unbuilt.

The epic amount of Epic stuff is mostly built and based bar some titans which need some stripping and a repairs so are a project unto themselves. Of this I'd say I'm about 1/4 painted.

This year I've had a "scenery year" so am mostly painting scenery including epic scale roads from Troublemaker Games. Next Year I'm either tackling the Ork Stompa or getting the Epic IG finish and see where to go from there.

The thing is, its not a pile of shame, its the hobby I want. If its all done its not a hobby any more!

LOL.

I meant asking people what percentage of their collection is in different states of ready/disrepair.

For example, 95% of my minis are painted and based, all are assembled, another 2% are primed. 3% are just bare plastic.
