That said, the only issues I have with cosplay or whatever is that people wear completely inappropriate clothing for their body, and go insane. There is something to be said for not dressing like a whore in general, and when your nylons stretch to the point they look like fishnets, you need to reevaluate your clothing. Not that fat people need to wear burkas, but people just need to realize that clothing that models can pull off does not necessarily work for everyone.
Well if you wanted to be technical....they can dress up as Yarna from Jabba the Hutt's escort:
That, and it worries me when people make up completely fictional persona's for themselves, and talk endlessly about how cool they are and all these things they "did". There is something rather sick about that.

Are there any Europeans who do this kind of thing at conventions (other than the odd 12 year-old at Gamesday), or is this just a Western Hemisphere thing? I've been to many UK game shows and never seen anyone dressed as such an arse! Maybe its just not a UK thing.
Well, sort of - any town founded by the Romans will have at least a few of those guys who build their own armour and march about being drilled in Latin by their centurion (or whatever). And I once went for an afternoon stroll through Tatton Park just after The Sealed Knot had finished doing their thing, and they were all getting ready to go home. Standing behind two cavaliers in the queue for an ice cream while they talk about whether to install Novell Netware 6.0 or 6.5 is an odd experience.
Both of those groups seem to take it awfully seriously, though. At least convention-goers seem to be doing it for fun (I hope).

BTW if you think cosplay is weird, check this out...
It's a "doller", someone who cosplays as a doll of an anime character.

First up a minor gripe:
[potentially racist comment]Is there a reason why only the Americans and Japanese seem to take Cosplay seriously?[/potentially racist comment
Since when are either Americans or Japanese a distinct race? That's almost as bad as people who claim that bad mouthing a particular religion is somehow "racist" as well. Yet another example of why the accusation of "racism" has become so watered down and misused that it's pretty much meaningless now.
But anyway....
As someone who has been involved in historical reenacting on and off for years (REAL reenacting, not the bad joke that is the SCA which someone mentioned previously) I really can't talk too badly about the cosplay crowd despite how odd as some of their antics seem to be at times. I'm alot of things, but I try not to be a hypocrite.
Currently my period of choice is WW2. I portray a senior NCO in a Volksgrenadier division circa December 1944. (It's an impression that is in keeping with my age and level of physical fittness. Nothing looks odder than some overweight 50 year old trying to portray a meth-fueled Waffen SS trooper or a lean and mean US paratrooper) There are a couple of photos of me in uniform floating around the 'net so I'll leave that for you all to locate. One of the perks of this hobby is that I often carry a live MP40 sub machinegun. How cool is that?

Ok, that Space Marine (despite looking like he suffers from dwarvism) gets props for having a customized Nerf Vulcan. That's just wicked cool...
But somewhat inappropriate to the costume, I think. Is that supposed to be a heavy bolter, or what?
Oh and yes, the SOB is most likely a guy. But I'm cool with that. We're living in an enlightened age.

I love this post. It's pretty rare to find an example of hypocrisy this blatant and extreme. Kudos to you, sir.
"My Cosplay is organized! This makes my cosplay cooler than your cosplay! So I'm going to look down at you!"
Though I suppose they are fairly different genres. As Cosplayers typically make their own costumes from scratch, and to be a member of the 501st all you need is a credit card and internet access.

Some (most?) cosplayers make their costumes, others buy them from shops.
I priced up the costume for an Engineer from Team Fortress 2 (I don't have the physique to be Haruhi Suzumiya) and it was going to be well over £100 including boots, hard hat, adjustable spanner, welding goggles, tool box and so on. So I didn't bother.
