I doubt I'll start a new army now - I already have 6 (3 WFB, 3 40K), of which only two are painted. Realistically, it's going to take me 3-4 years to paint what I have.

I may pick up a new unit (e.g. Valkyrie) here and there as the Codexes get redone, but I can't see adding another army to be worth the investment of time and money currently.

I can spend the money on board games and flying to Puerto Rico a couple of times during the winter instead.

I was going to be doing a Crusading Marine army (DYI Black Templars essentially) as my final army, including a legion of Bikes and Land Speeders, custom Land Raiders, whole units of individually converted models, and so on.

Not lookin' so good now.

Thanks GW. Thanks a bunch.

@Asmodai:

That sounds like a good plan, actually.

So far, this year, my gaming spend is like 25% WizKids Pirates and 75% GW IG Apoc.

If GW continues this way, I could easily see GW getting pretty much frozen out of my budget for the foreseeable future. I went something like 4 years without buying GW product, and I can do it again. No biggie.

The Warmachine Eldar are looking good, so I might get some of that. And they're poised for a reboot, so not a bad time to jump back in.

I definitely like the look of Flames of War, so I could see myself spending quite a chunk on 15mm WW2.

Or maybe a new PC rig...

So far, i have witness the following reactions from players regarding price increase:

Phase 1: " price increase? no that would be stupid even for GW" (skepticism )
Phase 2: " oh it'll just be 3% , you are just paranoid" (false relief)
Phase 3: " Well im sure its just a mistake! its too much to be true: (disbelief)

Phase 4: (what will it be? more denial? or acceptance? perhaps despair? ) ( 2012!? caused by raging GW fans? )

At least with so many people stopping buying new models they might get their existing models painted!!

It could be a great chance to branch out into the other aspects of the hobby. I'm going to get into story writing and scenery building and try to use the models I have to their full potential.

There's no point in whinging about the models I wont be able to afford anymore, when I have 100's of pounds/dollars worth of models not painted and not used!!

I'd really like to see their justification on models that have been in the current range for 10 + years; Warp Spiders I am looking at you.

If anything those should be lowered as there is no way GW sells that many warp spiders that they produce a new batch every month.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

Having been buying GW models for almost 20 years now I find this price increase shocking. Considering how many other companies are offering high quality multi-part plastic models at very cheap prices I really can not understand what GW is thinking.

Luckily all I ever need now is a random special character or something I just really like the look of. But absolutely no more new armies for me unless I get something second hand off of ebay for really cheap.

It is just a shame that GW doesn't keep prices at least a little bit more reasonable.

I simply don't know what GW are thinking. How is increasing prices to such ludicrous levels going to bring more gamers for longer, especially given the current financial climate?

With a growing diversity in the plastic miniature market price increases like this just seem destined for failure. And frankly GW quality with plastics might even be worse then some of the newer companies like the Perry Twins and Warlord.

Just doesn't seem well thought out.

JohnHwangDD theory of no US price increase is all well and good, but it's not backed up by the annoucement in the US White Dwarf for a price increase or by the fact that the new IG are priced higher. The increase might not be as high as what the UK will see, but there certainly is a planned increase for the US.

But GW sees themselves as the ferrari of miniature producers. You pay for the quality of ferrari, perceived and actual. If you cant afford ferrari you can always buy a honda.

Sadly, the US does indeed have a price increase coming. Independent retailers still do not know what it will be, nor do we have a current Trade Order Form, so your guess is a good as mine about what the increase will be. You'd think that they would have to tell us by June 1st. Hmmm, although they did tell us on Jan 3rd that prices went up Jan 1st, so maybe not.)

The only people not complaining are people who either aren't planning to buy anything from GW or people who are planning to sell GW stuff and are looking forward to the knock on effect of a bump in the value of second hand stuff.

I'm not complaining simply because I've seen this so many times before. And yet...GW remains a viable business.

I've learned that people simply don't put their money where their mouths are.

Here is what I tend to read whenever GW raises it's price:

May-June: $@#%$^%$%@ GW! I'm quitting! They are going to go out of business when we all quit!
May-July: Well, that just means I can go paint my backlog.
June-August: I'll only pick up the the necessities, like paint for my existing armies.
July-October: Well...I'll only pick up a few units for my existing armies...like that nifty new tank...or some Forgeworld stuff (because Forgeworld isn't really GW).
October-April: I have really cool ideas for a new army that I'd like to start!

rinse, repeat for over 10 years.

Sure, there are those who actually do quit...or at least stop their purchases for a while. But somehow, someway, this cycle perpetuates, which means many either don't quit like they said they would, don't stop their purchases as much as they say they would, and/or more people join the hobby. In any case, GW doesn't seem to have reached the critical threshold that would break this cycle, after so many years of doing this, including the Internet Sales Debacle. Sure...there's a global recession this year...but really...I doubt anything is going to break this cycle. People are going to keep spending.

I'll wait and see what people say when Planet Strike and Space Hulk come out later this year. Chances are...people will forget all about the price increase by then.

Yep. The drop in the British pound probably just shifted the 2009 increase ahead a few months to address the revenue leakage in gamers buying from the UK. I'm sure we'll see a price adjustment in 2010 as well.

Crap.

Still, it explains one of the holes that I wasn't able to address.

Given that the UK prices are going up by 40%, and 30% of that is due to currency shifts, there is 10% increase not accounted for. Thus, I guess that the US will see an increase of around 10%.

Bastards.

Some of us do a damn good job of it, though... I went from several hundreds per year down to nothing for a number of years. For the last few years, I've been at a few hundreds, and I can easily see that dropping to pure "maintenance" (Rulebooks & Codices only).

The GW price rise cycle is a lot shorter than 10 years. Try 5.

Sure. I do the same thing for the most part (though I've had a few instances of weakness). But as a population, GW customers' spending habits don't follow what they say on the forums.

JohnHwangDD wrote:

Now this is just silly. Maybe they've set to a specific time (June) when they will make official price increases as of 5 years ago, but we all know that price increases have been on the rise way before that and there are still hidden price increases that happen every now and then, as with the repackaging of their minis from box sets of 20 to 10. I know how much a Space Marine Dreadnought cost in 1993 (when Dreadnoughts came in BLISTERS) and I will bet you that in 1999 (10 years ago from today) the Space Marine Dreadnought cost more than it did in 1993. Same with Space Marine Tactical Squads. And Space Marine Terminators. And Space Marine Rhinos. And just about everything else (I have an old GW mail catalog from 1993 or earlier...I need to find it and scan it for you guys...believe it or not, it didn't have pictures! Just text of what the item was and the price). We just didn't have an internet forum to complain about it then.

Sure, they weren't the same models. But you are paying more per unit rules, which is how I judge the price increases for this hobby.
