There are moments of compassion in 40k.
Such as the Sisters Hospitalier looked after wounded soliders/civilians.
Some cases where guard/marines give up thier lives so refugees can escape (see Battle for Armgeddon).
There are stories of Mateship (catachan), Honour (marines), guile (eldar). But ultimately 40k teaches us that it is a savage world(galaxy). And that all that we can hope to achieve is really survival (hard to face up to that is)

I think she has a point, but that she also lacks perspective. The politics of 40k are horrifying, but so is the 40k world. In our world (that is, the actual real world, and generally the US, Western Europe and AUS/NZ within that world) believing in the religious desirability of daemonic rule is (at worst) bad manners to bring up at parties. In the 40k universe it can be a literal gateway to the possession and destruction of the entire effing universe. The principles of liberal democracy simply don't apply to a world with actual magic, actual psychic powers and actual daemons. Just my .02.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I will draw fire for this post, but hey, let's be fair I think she has some points.
Not on the main stupid page about 40K, on her comments that should not be so cynics if she wants to be listened.
Her explanation mail is far more constructive, and better written. She has a point saying that our letting young kids playing to war games (being the one we play or other ones, being toy soldiers or toy guns) is perhaps not the better way to end violence in this world.
She also have a point in saying that going to war serves some people, who are not the one dying doing the war usually. Wars are made for high ranking people benefits, and it is the grunt who pays with his life or sanity.
Now, she lacks a lot of realism on the real human nature, which is naturally turned to violence, especially with boys more than girls (even if my sister was playing orks ). Her vision is totally unrealistic and utopist. But we need this kind of people to remind us from time to time that all is not about killing and war and hurting people.
She also may want to consider that even checks are a war game, and one that is said to develop intelligence and logical thinking, and that is only one example.
For her conspiration theory (she calls that conspiration facts, that she is not interested in theory but talks only about facts), I do not buy it... letting people play war games to produce more soldier vocations in the future seems a little stretched to me.

Ahhhh,
Don't you just love the "Defender of the Righteous" Complex people develop. That damn near constant need to "fight the evils of today" and build for a "moralist tomorrow". Remember, if they say it's bad, then it's bad. Why, because it is. Because they say so. Because they see the need to have to persecute, flame, and rage against all "Pure Evil". Why? Because today is a corrupt one, and to blindly stride forward and rid the world of corruption is their duty. Remember kids, Video Games, Warhammer, Violence in General, and anything we don't see as wholesome is bad and rotten. And you'll contract a disease if you do it.
It's really funny how people have stereotypes, and at the same time many people see stereotypes as derogatory and untrue.

Well, I'm not going to hide all my models in the basement or wotnot, but I do live in that part of the country that has more than its fair share of Bible beaters.
A common story from southern childhood (although it could be from anywhere religion goes awry) runs roughly thus:
"I was around 11-13, and me and my friends started playing D&D. It was a blast. We got the rulebooks with allowance money (or as gifts from our cooler extended family - lots of families have the 'cool uncle' that left home at 17) and wrote up our own scenarios. We played D&D for a whole summer. Then my (mother in law/grandmother/aunt that I lived with) read an article in the (church newsletter/700 Club magazine/ Newspaper) talking about what D&D was. I used to store my D&D stuff under my bed. One saturday, I came back from a trip with family to find my stuff missing and a bonfire in the back yard....she said it was for my own good, cause that stuff was from the devil."
Just replace D&D in that sentence with 40k stuff (which is, what, 10x more expensive?) and you can see why this shouldn't be entirely regarded as a joke. I can just picture someone's granola-eating-hippie stepmom throwing out all their 40k stuff one day "because it wasn't spiritually healthy".
P.S. Before you ask, no, I didn't have this happen to me. My parents were pretty cool about it, but my dad did raise an eyebrow after seeing Mazes & Monsters. I told him, "Dad, that's the guy from Bosom Buddies, he doesn't do serious movies."
