Bought the box set the day it came out - had been playing Fantasy prior to that, but had no interest in 2nd ed 40k. Watching those games, it all seemed to come down to whose ridiculous character did what to the other guy's character. And the H2H system! Emperor, what a abortion that was!

When I heard 3rd ed was coming out, I figured I'd give it a shot. I did like 3rd ed, until BA - my god, that codex owned so much face. Regular Rhino Rush was ok, but BA Rhino Rush was just broken...

Lots to miss about 3rd ed - WD being awesome, humongous variety of army lists, etc.

Whoa! Technically, I think you're right. GW has never made their old minis illegal, and as ridiculous as it is, the card dreadnought counts.

Dang, I'm sure I threw that out a while ago too.

I started playing heavily in the 2nd edition years, played a huge amout of 3rd edition until Chaos became laughable losers, mostly skipped 4th edition but kept on collecting models and have been hard core into it again since the 5th ed rules hit the shelf!

Rogue Trader models will still readily available when I first started but sadly land raiders were quite sold out in my area!
My first land raider was the very 1st MKII LR available in my area! It was a pre pre order model that came as part of a $300ish space marine battle force box! oh the memories!

I still remeber being super stoked when The *dark millenium* box set came out lol! I'm just happy the game is a lot cleaner now and I don't need to carry around 100's of wargear/psychic power cards or turning templates *vomit*

Every once in a while if I need a good laugh I open my rogue trader rulebook and fall out of my chair laughing!

All I have to say is Space Slann

They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give of themselves to me. Like clay I shall mold them, And in the furnace of war I shall forge them. They will be of iron will and steely muscle. In great armor shall I clad them, and with the mightiest of guns will they be armed. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines, and they shall know no fear.

It would be annoying when they make new editions (I haven't experienced one yet) because you memorise the new rules, you get the (horribly expensive) new books and all the new dudes then GW just goes "New edition" and all of your work is destroyed. On the other hand, new editions mean that they (probably) make the rules better/fairer

I started with Rouge Trader, still got two copies of the manual! I remember 3 rhinos in a box for £10 and 30 plastic Womble marines for £10 too. Was still really expensive for a kid on 50p a week pocket money but then that was what Birthdays and Christmas were for! Oh and I don't feel that old but I did start young!

Started with RT, dropped out for quite a few years and now on the 5th ed. This is much better in terms of game play (ah the fond memories of using RT rules to work out vehicle acceleration, deceleration, turn ratio radius! No wonder games took so bl**dy long!) They've obviously updated it so it's easier to spend more money on - oh I mean easily use vehicles etc. Could still do with a few tweeks though, and I think my CSM codex could certainly be better.

I started in 2nd ed when you had every model in your gretchin squad fight individually due to the H2H system! Crazy but fun (esp when a gretchin laid the smack down on a warp spider!) They should have kept the H2H system for the skirmish games, it works really well!

The new edition doesn't cut the mustard in terms of fun but I fear I sound old when I say that!

But I sure do miss Rhinos for £5 and a whole box of Metal Death Company Marines + Chaplain for £10!!

I actually started about 2 weeks before 5th Ed. came out, but I didn't actually play until after it was out. I just remember how excited everyone was looking over the store's copy of the rulebook.
