I love getting sneak attack Crits with a rocket launcher. It's great fun when dealing with crowded areas of people.

What?

No, really. I think you didn't actually play Republic Commando. Saying it "sidestepped any decent gameplay features from either"? That it "ripoff the orders system(but not as good) from Rainbow Six 3"?

That's true to a point...but only if you ignore everything else(the variable vision modes that RC introduced, the idea of "modular" weapons, the idea of melee takedowns, the ability to swap grenades on the fly, the cover system that they introduced which was later utilized in Mass Effect and GRAW/Rainbow Six: Vegas).

I personally thought Republic Commando looked like a great game, but I didn't get to play it since it wasn't released on PS2 :/

Hahahaha oh wait you're serious. You airsoft players always crack me up. Always so serious when you play and so certain that your hobby is better than paintball when they're both practically the same thing.

Seriously though, an airsoft game is a terrible idea. It would be like playing any fps out there, only there's no death animation and no blood. You just shoot at things until you hit them and they walk away/dissapear.

However, I've played one or two of the paintball games, and as soon as I was given a tutorial on how to wipe a shot (basically rubbing off the paint when the refs aren't watching) I immediately shut the game off as I was rather disgusted. So those aren't too great either.

Video games allow us to do crazy fictitious things that we simply can't do in real life. Why make a game about the limitations of real life when the whole idea of a video game is to bypass those boundaries?

I was kidding about making an airsoft game, but not about it being better than paintball. However, I play in a combat simulations group where we use real gun external parts from the military and surplus gear so my experiences with my spetznas team will definitely vary from yours.

Giving your team the name Spetznas doesn't make you special forces...

Also, I remembered another one of my 'wishes': I want a cold war nuclear-option simulator. Basically a game where you can play as the Americans or the Soviets each with their own separate command structure and policies for nuclear weapons release, etc. and you play in a variety of different roles which you switch through on the fly, both political and military. In political roles you might find yourself bringing a new nation into your alliance, stationing conventional or nuclear forces around the globe, declaring war on various nations, etc. All of which has implications for the 'doomsday clock' which creates tension between the two sides and makes the likelihood of an attack more likely. In military roles you will research new technologies, have more granular control over the precise positioning of conventional/nuclear forces as well as slightly more control over the conventional warfare aspect, and during 'alerts' (basically somewhat randomly occurring situations based on the various real world ones where there were false alarms of missile launches, or it looked like one side was ready to attack the other etc.) you will have direct control of the nuclear forces themselves, such as the captain (or other crew member) of a ballistic missile submarine, a missileer sitting in a bunker ready to push the big red button, radar operators/intel analysts, or of course a member of the command authority tasked with making the decision whether to authorize a weapon release based on incomplete information during a developing situation, etc. (In other words, the alert starts with you as the command authority receiving word of a detected missile launch, and you have x many minutes to authorize counter-attack or what-have-you and you must make decisions about putting forces on airborne alert, readying missiles to return fire, trying to contact other organizations for confirmation, etc. and as the situation develops and you gain more information you must decide whether its a false-alert or the real deal but the information you get can be inaccurate, unclear, incomplete etc. Another possible scenario is being in the silo or on a sub and getting an incomplete message/orders to launch that may have been sent in error, etc. and having to make the relevant decisions there ala crimson tide, or simply being a radar operator that picks up incoming missiles that could possibly be something less sinister and making the decision whether to pass that info along, etc.). I would want the game to be as realistic and accurate to the real world as possible and every scenario should be plausible, but obviously some stretches need to be made to make the game entertaining, etc. (although there WASa history of errors during the cold war during which time forces were given authorization or reason to act but decisions were made by the button pushers which averted catastrophe, so its not entirely unrealistic). Oh, and the game ends either with nuclear war, disarmament, or the collapse of one or both sides due to political, economic, etc. conditions.

EDIT: I played a demo, as despite the terrible reviews it got, i was curious. I remember a really long sludgy, crudely 'normal-mapped', corridor and firing a really puny laser gun only to realize one of the other options was Vastly OP. Cant even remember if it was a sniper or a rocket launcher.

Off the top of my head here are some games that came out before RC with said features, this was not difficult:

Variable vision modes:
Rainbow six 3 had both NVG and Therms. The predator has several vision modes in AvP, ~1999. Hell even snake has NVG and Therms.

Grenades:
The black button switched between frag and Plasma grenades in Halo.

Melee takedowns:
Chronicles of Riddick, Aug 2004

Cover:
Well its a bit of a dead horse but what the hey. Killswitch, ~2001. Also although you could not take cover in RS:3, if ordered to, your squad would.

Modular weapons:
Turok Evolution (terrible game but it had at least one modular weapon), ~2002. Plus its not a good idea, only last years 'hard reset' has utilized it since.

OT, Mass effect style game with a larger GTA sized hub would be good. I like the idea of Future cities with hover cars etc. Or possibly a game that combined Space combat with fps combat in a singleplayer environment. IIRC there was a game called 'Mace griffin' that tried this and i remember being amazed at being able to get out the cockpit of my fighter and move around. I suppose something akin to the Spaceship level of Reach would be good.

Any decent World War 1, Korean War, or Vietnam War games. Bad Company Vietnam was pretty good on the multiplayer side of things, it captured the feel of things nicely, but left me wanting more, especially a campaign. I'm not going to lie, I played Call of Duty: Black Ops solely for the level in which you pilot the PBRs to Sympathy for the Devil.

I'd love to see the good Gundam video games come over here to America. I'm tired of getting Dynasty Warriors: Gundam. Its really boring especially since they rip out all of the cool Gundam music and replace it with generic background music which sucks.

I know I'm wish listing too hard right now with this, but getting the Super Robot Wars games here would be awesome!

Honestly, just take many of the best games with silent protagonists and add character customization that lets me change race, gender, appearance, etc so that I can create my own silent douchebag character to play in it instead of the generic white anglo saxon protestant male douchebag they have in mind.

Did you ever play Dragon Age: Origins? You could make a surley and angry elf/dwarf female with silent protagonist syndrome. OT, an "empire" building fantasy game would be fun. If someone could figure out how to smash Simcity and WHFB together and let me design my cities and fight battles then I would be a happy man...but my wife wouldn't be due to neglect.

Yes, I have. But it was only one game. Plenty of RPGs are released without these features.

Many of which I didn't buy specifically because they lacked them.

I can understand, there has been a lack of really good RPGs over the past couple of years. I have yet to play Skyrim, but I am waiting for it to get cheaper and not be bugged out with backwards flying dragons.

No, but I know of it. Not what I am looking for at all, its hearts of iron with a different tech-tree. I find it hard to get excited about grand strategy games of any sort, because ultimately it boils down to playing a hyper-detailed version of risk. I like to be able to see the legions of loyal soldiers that I send to their deaths while they do there thang on the battlefield.

I have, I own the original. I knew they released a 'nam but didn't know about Korea. I'll have to look into it, thanks!

A decent, gritty, adaption of Sahdowrun on a next gen engine (no top down 8 bitness for me^^). Admitedly I think that I'll be stuck with the Deus Ex series as a half bit stand in for it though (not to say that that series isn't fantastic). ^^

Oh and a 40k game that doesn't having Space Marines central to its plot. Even better a game set on a hive world or the like. Something showing a part of the 40k universe other than the sprawling battlefields that every other game has shown (though Fire Warrior wasn't actually that bad to be honest). Hell something with some Guardsmen (customisable wargear of course) would be great. =)

While ST:Legacy was ok, this is a true Star Trek game. You play as a captain of a ship, issuing orders from the bridge to AI crew members. My all time favorite game!

We need more games that let you play as animals and eat people. I have fond memories of the Jurassic Park game for ps1 (the one where you start off as a compy). Tearing through a camp of mercenaries as you just eat and destroy everything was a blast.

So yeah, we need more carnivore related things.

havent played civilization, but it might be close. Im thinking more like a more focused hearts of iron type game though.

And defcon is fun, but not quite what I'm looking for, its a little too... "imminent destruction" for my tastes (seriously its basically a countdown timer to nuclear war, im looking for something that involves a bit more paranoia).
