Excellent marines. I love the realistic look with all the dirt and dust, far better than the standard pristine armour commonly seen on space marines. I'm looking forward to seeing them finished.

Just finished up the first part of the Dark Angels tutorial and here's where we left off... Take a look at the video in the tutorials section here on dakka!
Love the work on the models and your post production on the images themselves is always fun.

Nice 'Dark Angle' (although I think you meant Angel)!
Seriously tho - I love the weathered templars. Interesting bases, great dusty 'black' armour, win all the way. Cant wait to see some of the details picked out on them!

That very impressive! When you do the Black Templars vid, are you going to make them all weathered and beaten up like you did with your commission project?
Got my new airbrush on the way so I can advance commissions to color modulation. So tonight I started putting together some models I plan to sell on the site. Tyrainc War Vets 2 blister on each side and the SM Master of the Arsenal. I was practicing airbrush control on them to get ready for the arrival of the new brush and it was the first time I tried it on troop minis.
I figured I'd show you the progress. They have only been airbrushed black then 3 blue layers worked up then a glaze of regal blue hand painted over all the armor. Just started basing the gold areas and dirt in brown when I took the pic. The glaze medium made them very shiny which sucks for pix :(

Not bad. I saw a video on YouTube about that color modulation technique, if that's what you're using for commissions then they should turn out looking pretty good.
If I could afford it I'd probably just have you paint my vehicles for me.

I see lots of mistakes on these models. I'm happy with how good they turned out for a first attempt but I need to tone the color down a bit and work slower. I'm sure if I took my time they would turn out great.. so into the simple green! With my black templars! oops..
Is is possible to request a tutorial for the air brush color modulation method you used? i've been an avid visitor to your sites for a while now i'm contemplating making a large order of your weathering powders. i've tried my hand at creating your amazing washes through your recipe, its taken some practice but the recipe is amazing.
you've given me a great deal of inspiration to finish my Deathwing army, the full 100 terminator strong company, along with 6 venerable dreads and 3 landraiders, aswell as multple other out of print dark angels chars.
I was wondering if you would ever do a Deathwing tutorial, along with your dark angel tutorial which is amazing in and of itself.
hats off to you, you're an amazing painter and i applaud your ventre to improve the hobby.
Keep up the good work.
Curious about your cost for commission painting aswell for large daemon prince sized models, i've got a few for a dioramic display i'd like to get commissioned. if you could please \\pm me with reguards to the prices.

I will do a color modulation tutorial but it's not the top of my list. Most people don't have an airbrush, or the money that you must commit to a setup. But MIG has a DVD about color modulation and the theory which is where I learned it from. Look at GMM Studios' stuff and there's tons of examples of what is possible.
And this vid.
Commissions are not being done at this time because I'm in training season. The goal is completing the SM tutorials (all 111 of them) as well as a couple different things along the way to make a huge inventory of paint tutorials.
But when I do take on commissions I keep my costs lower than most but higher than new commission painters. But the NEW portfolio is being made now so when the commission doors open I have enough examples. So stay tuned.
Look at the pictures and see the precision it can dial in on paper. The video of it in action is insane. Shows what a brilliant artist can do with a brilliant tool
Sorry to hear about you loss in the fire, not many people would continue with it. I'm not really a chaos sort of person but they look great! almost making me want to start a chaos army, only i don't have the money...
you rock!
Orkses never lose a battle! If we win we win If we dies we die fightin' so it dun count If we runs for it we don't die neither cos we can come back for annuver go, see!
I tried to comment on your youtube video about colour modulation, but it all went a bit mental. I'd say it would be a good idea to up the ante in terms of quality and show us what an airbrush is really capable of, but some people will never want to go down that route, so the standard paintbrush method will certainly still be appreciated. Maybe a mix of the two techniques would be sensible? Maybe have one in four with a paintbrush? That way, we'll all be encouraged to push ourselves further by the new methods you'll show us, but there will still be something for the non-airbrush people.
Another random thought: Hove you ever thought about painting something for a Golden Demon entry? The reason I ask is that I was reading (for the 8 bazillionth time) the tutorial for Magmatrax by Vincent Hudon, who says that the best way of pushing yourself is just to try something harder than you think you can do and then just read up on the methods out there and have a go. Personally, I just don't have the core base skills at the moment, or the time necessary to really do it, but you seem to be really interested in pushing yourself and have shown yourself capable of producing consistently brilliant results. I know you're very involved with the space marine project at the moment, but as a side project, aren't you slightly intrigued to see how you'd do? You are, aren't you? Speaking for myself (and probably 90%) of the Dakka community, we'd love to see you have a go at this and would certainly be willing to provide any C&C that you asked for....
Go on.... You know you want to..... No pressure, honest!
Im curious why is it called color modulation when it seems to be zenithal with an airbrush?
The methodology is the same and just as simplistic.
Is there any actual difference?
On minis the technique is the same. But on vehicles it's not accurate like with zenithal or "overhead lighting" but rather making gradients that will exaggerate the shadows and light to look pleasing to the eye. Like scalemodelmedic says in the video, it's not accurate but it looks very pleasing to the eye.
Ill agree its not accurate but I would argue, at least based on what I've seen of local mini painting winners with my less than trained eye, that zenithal likewise is usually exaggerated to be pleasing to the eye.
But that does answer my question. Thanks
I would love to see a tutorial on how you've done models with an airbrush.. Looking to possibly try some new more advance techniques on some blood angels possibly in the coming future.
Long time reader of all your work Les, possibly first time poster, I've had a few drinkies, so I honestly can't rememeber.
To be honest, I've always found you work to be exceptional, and have been trying to find the mats to make up your washses, as well as i could, was gutted to see your store vanish for the most part, hope to see it back up soon, I'd been saving up! Your UM and DA tutes are exceptional, as much as I'd expect from yourself after following you on youtube, your website, and finally here. Can't wait for more tutorials. Keep up the epic work my friend!
Edit, almost forgot why I posted, and this is aimed at the people who didn't like the heavy weathering on the BT earlier on. How many times have you seen, or even heard of an army, that is IN active service, stopping to polish or clean their uniforms? I've been watching a few documentaries and a few TV shows, and theres one constant between them.... NO LAUNDRY! Heavy weathering looks awesome. Keep it on them.
