Finished Fear to Tread earlier today. Quite an enjoyable read.

My favorite part was finally figuring out whose flayed face Horus wears on his armor (left shoulder pad in Adrian Smiths excellent EvH duel picture). Been waiting for something bad to happen to that character since his first appearance.

Although I may well be connecting dots that don't exist. I'm just assuming its this characters face, as the description of Sanguinius seemed to match his portrayal in Adrians aforementioned picture, so I'm guessing thats what inspired this scene. Either ways its a great moment and the coolest thing Horus has done in the series recently.

That bit is oddly satisfying.

Finished Emperors Gift. It was excellent for a Black Library book and good for a standard science fiction book. A couple of little neat things in it and I loved the way the Wolves are portrayed and the deeper insight into the aftermath of the first war for Armageddon.

Reading Fear to Tread right now. I was seriously worried about Swallow but so far so good. Granted I'm only like 60 pages in.

But then I'm off BL for a month due to new Weber and Stirling books coming out. Gonna re-read both series before snatching up the new books

I'm not worried about Swallow's HH work - he almost seems to be a different writer when he's working in there. His non-HH series stuff? Not so much...

I have to ask - what's Weber and Stirling? Sounds like a law firm...

@Alpharius

Two different authors. David Weber and SM Stirling. They've both got books coming out for two of their longer running series. The David Weber series is the Safehold series and this is book number 5 I wanna say. And it seems to be his passion right now. The SM Stirling series called the Change series or something. It's book like 9 or 10 and it's a hella good series. And it looks like that new show Revolution stole a bit from it which could be a good thing Can't be sure though, only seen previews.

Don't wanna drag to much off topic but here a brief rundown of both:

Change Series:

Initial trilogy follows several groups of people after all higher energy outputs stop working. So no cars, guns, electricity, or even steam power. The 4-current books follow children of those initial groups as the first generation really born without technology beyond what can be accomplished with wind, water, and strength. Blends a little more mystical the longer the series has gone but it's generally spiritual not physical manifestations. Truly excellent series.

Safehold Series:

Harder to explain. Here is the website for David Weber and the first novel of the series: http://www.davidweber.net/books/43-off-armageddon-reef.html

I agree, that is simultaneously a hilariously bad but also awesome name for a book. Like the kind of 80's film that comes on the Horror channel at 3am ('Bloodspire: Deathwolf') or the name a bunch of 13-year olds would come up with for the name of their new rock band.

I've wondered recently at the naming conventions of BL - 'Know no Fear', appalling, when said quickly sounds like that god-awful 90's pop-dance music song. 'Fear to tread' has obviously taken the name from the well known poem but without any acknowledgement of its meaning (I guess it sounded cool?)

To be fair... It is two different stories. Although they are pretty badly named individually.

I wonder, do the Blood Angels intentionally go out and look for Blood themed cities to have a fight in?

I'm actually a bit annoyed about that CD, I went and bought Bloodspire thinking it was only going to be available online...

As for fear to tread, wasn't the whole concept of it that the Blood Angels foolishly rushed into an obvious trap and got hammered?

Awesome. I'll have to try and check them out sometime.

Now to try and avoid reading anyone mentioning Fear to Tread.

Going back to an earlier conversation about AD-B and his general attitude on his blog, I just came across and old Void Stalker Q&A (I'm really looking forward to his next, whenever that is, although he did say he was doing a vid Q&A) - seemingly pre-release. Anyways, here are some highlights:

Joe Scrim Till Deth asks: “will the series of night lords books go on as long as the ultramarines??? If so will the night lords reunite there entire legion by the end of it cause from what i have read they seem to be a very broken up legion!!?” Man, that’s a grotesque amount of punctuation. I think I hate you. Firstly, it might go on after a break, but this is the end of the trilogy for the near future, at least. And no, no one Night Lord would ever be able to unite the Legion. That’s just now how Chaos Marines work, as every edition of the Chaos Space Marine Codex has highlighted. Even the Legions that are still relatively ‘together’ through a time-mutable eternity of infighting and war within a realm of pure Hell are still warbands, led by individual champions and warlords, coming together largely for raiding and Black Crusades.

cott Anderson asks: “Who was Alpharius the whole time? but I won’t answer it because I hate smilies.

Dale Jordan Parratt asks: “Cyrion is my favourite without a doubt.” and is promptly informed that that’s not a question.

Kenneth Goddard asks: “Will we start to see the Night Lords start to recruit and replenish their numbers?” which makes me wonder if he’s read the end of Blood Reaver.

Joe Marsden asks: “Question for you sir: Did you ever consider real world criminal organisations (their cultures, codes etc) when thinking about the Night Lords? If so, which ones? And, last question; could any victory or achievement truly make the Night Lords of your novels ‘happy’ or fulfilled?” The Mafia. I’ve researched them pretty heavily in the past for writing projects, so I know quite a lot about them. And sure, some of the characters could be fulfilled. It depends on their drives and desires, really. Cyrion and Xarl are already fairly fulfilled – they just want to survive another day in a galaxy that hates them. Talos struggles, though. Part of that is because he knows he’s essentially hollow, an avatar of the Legion’s capacity for self-deceit. Despite being from Nostramo, he’s what the Night Lords were before all the Nostramans joined the ranks. And remember, he’s right to be unhappy about a lot of things: Curze annihilated their home planet to stop any more of them joining his Legion. That’s serious juju. That’s not the act of a primarch who thinks his Legion is a great bunch of guys.

Ragnar Karlsson, who works at Black Library, asks: “Is it going to be on time? Is it feth.

Joe Lyons asks: “How did you get the Night Lords so.. human? At least, as human as ancient genetically-forged giant killers can be, but unlike so many other astartes in writing, they are properly individual characters that I care about. Was it a conscious thing to move away from the norm?” It was, actually. Everyone has a different opinion on exactly how Marines act. For me, humanity – as a concept and an expected ideal of behaviour – covers a broad spectrum. The Night Lords were human; human children, at least. They’ve got human foundations to their psychological makeup, but a lot of their development was stunted, manipulated, or otherwise altered by nature and nurture. They’ve each got aspects of humanity, and their origins do show easily enough. Whereas I tend to write loyalist Marines are more “autistic from the outside” and focused, driven by duty, Chaos Marines are largely driven by emotion – and usually negative ones. That matters. It’s a powerful slice of characterisation, too.

Wesley Weix: “How many times did you work on VS behind the Wifey’s back during the honeymoon? :p” Not many, actually. I did some of The Butcher’s Nails, and I read a lot of Steve Pressfield. I was mostly concerned with looking at Katie naked.

What is the Red Angel?

Spoiler:
In the warp’s shadow, Kano saw a pair of ghostly, blood-drenched wings briefly unfold from the wounded Apothecary’s back, anointing the ruined bones beneath with a rain of phantasmal blood; then they were gone.
Brother Meros ended, and the Red Angel began

Just a quick info on the First Book done by Black Library ...

Its called "Die Toten Zu Ehren - Die Narben von Calth" (To honor the dead - the scars of Calth), and was sold at GD Germany. It was written and signed by Gav Thorpe and its limited to 1,500 copies. The booklet has just about 40 pages and is staring the Titan Legio Praesagius and Legio Infernus as well as their battle over the city of Ithraca on Calth.
So this is right at the moment the betrayal actually takes place.

Short info on the back cover in German:
Spoiler:

Short info on the back cover in English:
Spoiler:

The war has reached Calth. Its cities and orbital docks are burning, brother is turning against brother as the betrayal of the Word Bearers becomes apparent. Entire regiments of the imperial guard swear allegiance to the arch traitor Horus. However, high above the streets of the cities, the colossal titans of Legio Praesagius unleash the righteous wrath of the emperor against the enemy - even though death seems certain, they will fight till the bitter end, to protect the citizens of Ithraca against the traitorous hordes.

This booklet reminded me once again, why I dont like the german translations of the BL books. For some odd reason, all the cheesy moments are even cheesier in the german language. It is also beyond my why the Imperiale Armee (thats the name of the codex here) is always turned into the Imperiale Garde. I dont get it.
If you ask me, its nothing special and it doesnt tell you anything that the other HH books havent covered yet.

Also: Im terribly sorry for not having thought about picking some up for the collectors on the board here ... I could imagine some people wanting to get their hands on it simply for the shelf.

Thing looks like this:

Nice review, and a pic in front of Dakka too.

Hope it isn't "cheesier" in everything we get Was looking forward to BL's performance and this sounds like they think we like cheese... The Imperiale Armee bit I can ignore, just don't translate Legion names. ( Happened before. True story ).

So what this here, silence in summer time? Assumed some have time to read right now..

Priests of Mars for example.... was bit weird in the Black Templar part ( seargents? ) but overall worth reading.

I know, right?! Translating actual faction names is just about the dumbest thing I have EVER seen. The book Grey Knights was actually called "Graue Ritter". Just goes to show that the books we not translated by anybody actually familiar with the setting ...

Anywho, BL Germany will kick off in January 2013.
Here are the books listed so far:

January:
- Prospero brennt (Dan Abnett)
- Feuersalamander (Nick Kyme)
- Nagash der Zauberer (Mike Lee)

February:
- Zeitalter der Dunkelheit (Edited by Christian Dunn)
- Rote Wut (James Swallow)
- Sigvald (Darius Hinks)

March
- Die verstossenen Toten (Graham McNeill)
- Seelenjäger (Aaron Dembski-Bowden)
- Blutgeboren (Nathan Long)
