Seen the whole thing. Some people complained that it was to simmiler. Just remember,

Great music too.

Yeah, just finished the first episode and I can really tell its by the same person. The initial set up is incredibly similar to Geass. Then again the art style and music alone had me hooked a whole two minutes into it. Totally spending the rest of shift at work watching this.

On Ep5 now, and I can tell its written by the same guy cause he's reusing a lot of his plot devices and themes, but damn I love the animation in this one. Its quality is really up there.

And the music is fantastic.

I'm almost finished with Gurren Lagann now, just three more episodes to go.

I honestly didn't expect I'd like it as much, as I am not a big fan of the "mecha" genre outside individual exceptions like NGE, and because I usually avoid the "uncanny valley" kid shows that fall somewhere between hilarious comedy and serious action (both of which I like). However, with Gurren Lagann, what convinced me to stick with the show was their character designs, and their plots. I did not expect a show whose often colourful and somewhat crazy style and the clearly exaggerated FX make it look a little like Yu-Gi-Oh would actually turn out to be this enjoyable for me.

What further affected my decision to continue watching was, I guess, the unexpected twists. I won't go into spoilers here, but an example of the things that surprised me was that the series actually continues after the protagonists beat the big bad boss, making a time-jump of several years into the future so the characters you knew as youngsters were suddenly adults, with some unexpected but reasonable conflicts between each other as their personalities evolved and the characters are confronted with new problems.
Apart from offering more episodes to watch, I like this concept for providing answers to the usual question of "what happens next" - you rarely have a show that continues after the threat exposed in its pilot was eliminated and everything seemed to be at peace.

As for the plot itself, the show begins with a desolate Earth covered by a giant desert, and where the few humans live in underground colonies, continuously threatened by the mechanical "gunmen" that roam the surface world in search for humans who have come out of their hiding places. Some day, two brothers happen to find a buried gunman in their settlement and manage to actually start it up. From there begins a small rebellion against the "beastmen" on the surface that eventually erupts into full-scale warfare.

Also, this show has some badass music.

Spoiler:

Intro to the first part of the show.

The opening changes slightly based on the state of the conflict:

Middle part.

Last part of the series.

Yep, that's exactly why I thought I wouldn't like it. Usually, I can only stand kids in anime that are clearly focused on comedy (like Azumanga Daioh - greatly recommended!), preferring an adult cast for anything serious.

Fortunately, for me, the good outweighs the bad in this one. Or they pulled the bad off in a manner that is bearable. It's probably a bit of both. Either way, somehow I've almost watched the entire show by now.

Next on the list will probably be the Dragon Age anime. Just ordered it from amazon!

I'm sorry, I'm confused. My problem is the fact that the mechs are giant faces. Kids have nothing to do with it.

Oh! Sorry, my bad - I thought "an unearthly child" would be a cliché term for children whose skills/abilities make them centerstage protagonists. Didn't know this was an actual title for another movie/series.

Gurren Lagaan is one of my favorite animes of all time, easily top five. Quite possibly number one, but I'm hesitant to actually name a number one, so I'll just stick with top five.

Brotherhood and Geass are probably in the top five as well.

I'm 50% confident that Gurren Lagann is my number 1. Just finished my third time through it recently and I loved it just as much as the first time, and got to share it with friends. It's great.

The second movie's fun, and expands on the final fight a bit, but isn't really too different.

Finished Guilty Crown. Interesting premise, beautiful animations, and fantastic music, but the story turned to suck pretty fast. Worth a watch though. One of the few animes with half-decent ending, opposed to an utterly craptacular one.

I know I've seen worse. Guro is something that should never be modeled.

There are ... guro statues?

Yoko is awesome, though. 90% fanservice, but a badass either way.

Also: just watched the last episode. Damn, what an ending. Amazing, and moving.

Bebop is great, loved the music, yoko kanno knocked another one out of the park.

Edit; Was I watching a different Gurren Lagann? I thought it was tripe, and full of bad anime cliche's.

Gurren Lagaan is Every tripe anime cliche melted down and refined to remove all the bad and leave you with 120% pure coolness, awesomeness and radicalness.

I've been laughing my ass off about this. Obviously some people have really odd views on 'purity'.

And, admittedly, you have to admit, it does make a lot of sense.

BRW: I finally remembered where the hell 'An Unearthly Child' is from. It's the first ever episode of Doctor Who.

I personally think they forgot to 'remove the bad' and well almost every anime that came before it did something better then it. =shrugs= Kirby is cool though.

Been watching STP lazyner lately damn fine show, wish I found it sooner. Highly recomended plus the opening song is just great.

First opening, and second one after the time skip.

Finished Guilty Crown. Was cool. Not as good as Geass, but that might have to do with it being significantly shorter so you don't get as much story build and character development despite it following a lot of the same angles and premise.
