The German Spider-Man books finally reached ASM #700 and... damn, that was awesome. It probably would've been a a lot more shocking if I didn't know about the body swap for over a year now, but the writing and art was incredible. I can't wait to start reading Superior Spider-Man.

Also, Justice League Dark is boooooring. I bough the first trade because of all the talk from Guillermo del Toro making a movie with the team, but damn, I was bored. Zatanna is nothing at all like her old self and there was a distinct lack of Etrigan.

Finally got a new Batman Beyond book and the first Justice League beyond trade. Loved them both. Batman again captures what made the show so fun and yet does some very evil things with established characters and the Bat mythos. I can't wait for the next one.
Justice League Beyond was probably the most epic JL thing I've read in years, but I don't want to spoil anything. It has Terry McGuiness in it as is drawn by Dustin Nguyen. What could you possible want more?

It doesn't even say that. It says Franklin seems like he's 7 or 8 to him therefore Reed fought in the Gulf War I guess. Therefore Magneto is a member of Al-Quada. It's breaking "news" some guy pulled out of ass.

I dont think a sliding continuity is any worse than all the other contradictions, retconns and cross overs that are an inevitable consequence of the comic book format and the way the market drives the industry.

If a decent team puts together a good story arc or consistent run of a few years on a title thats about the most you can hope for.

Trying to enjoy the Marvel or DC universe in a wholistic way does not work because it is simply not created in that way.

The chaos of comic book universes is kind of an argument in favor of the GW approach of a timeline perpetually stuck at one minute until midnight. Now obviously this method is not suitable for the vast majority of comic books, I just mention it as an alternative.

For me, the fewer super heroes in a title the better. This is why I liked titles like Hellblazer, Preacher, Spectre (Ostrander run), Jonah Hex, Turok, Magnus Robot Fighter etc. These titles tended to have a rather tight timeline as well.

There are two sorts of collector. One wants a thing for its own sake. The other wants a thing to get rid of it. The former wants the same thing I want: to experience an enjoyable piece of art. The latter wants other people to not experience an enjoyable piece of art, because doing so drives down the value of their "investment". So if reprinting comics and making them available to second-wave fans hurts them, I don't sympathise.

Well to the comic company, old comics are worthless. They can't make money on them so they need to keep coming out with something to sell. Years ago they would just do second prints but not many bought them because they were the same as what they already had. So they came out with the collected format and it took off. It's a great way to make money out of something you already had.

I would like to see Trades that are actually new content but comes out quarterly or something.

Since the Man of Steel thread seems to be as dead as a certain Kryptonian, I'd like to say here that I saw the movie a second time and liked it even more.

My buddy and I had the exact same first reaction walking out -- the fight sequences in the last part of the movie moved *much* faster with the second viewing. I understood the criticism about the fights being too drawn out after my first viewing, but I recommend that you see it a second time if that's your main criticism. I don't know why it seemed so much faster, but the effect was very noticeable. In fact, I'd now argue that the pacing of MoS in general seemed much better than that of The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises.

Back on books, who's reading Jupiter's Legacy?

For a time it seemed like the new content in trades came in the form of
concept art, alternate cover designs, and famous writer introductions. I
don't think they do that any more.

I like this idea. While collected issues in one book help someone like me catch up it would also help the market in general and comic fandom as a whole.

I'm hating how currently with comics it takes about 5min to read. They used to have so much mores story and dialog. Now they expand things out and give you more splash pages of artwork. Great art sometimes but also boring! I want a real story for my $2.99 or $3.99 an issue. Why spend that when I could buy a novel for $8.99 and read it for weeks! I know, no cool artwork, but my imagination isn't that bad either.

I find they take me 20-30 minutes on average. I guess I'm slow.

It might depend on what you read. Even so, is that much money worth those few minutes?

$1/10 minutes? Debatable. Extrapolated out to $6 an hour it's comparable to a movie.

If you're reading good comics then it's a good value.

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

Just got through reading all of the old X-O manowar comics. I really like the story, the art hasn't aged all that well but it still passable.

I also read 14 of the new reboot of X-O but I didn't like the new enemy, I like the old spiders to the new vine.

I hope one day this will get a movie.

Just a quick query for those who have been in about comics for a long while and might be able to point me in the right direction.

Fan art of comics, for sale all over eBay, Comic art fans sites etc, is that illegal and Marvel/DC just don't bother hunting down individuals making money off their characters, or is is deemed something else, maybe some weird cross over as its original art inspired by other folks work?

Just wondering how folks who seem to mass produce commissions and a lot of stuff they then sell are getting away with it, or is it really not an issue.

Oh and yes their is an ulterior motive for this question, just wanted to know before my better half attempts to try and sell stuff in the future.

Whether they can stop you selling fan works is still a legal gray area, but just because they can doesn't mean they will. Some companies are actively supportive of fanart and selling derivative works, while others are jerks about it, even when the fanart does not compete with their own product and is thus little more than free advertising.

I think in this case, it often times boils down to subject matter too. I mean, if a guy is selling a picture of Wolverine doing the nasty with another X-men character, then Marvel will have a problem. Beyond that sort of instance, I think that many companies realize that the physical paper copies of graphic novels are an endangered species, and so will take most any advertisement they can.

I don't think so. I mean, it's Wolverine. They have no problem with him being butt naked on occasion, and he's had a ton of lovers canonically.

One off art, meaning there is only the original that you own. Is not illegal. It's when you start making prints and selling them it's a problem. Hence why you can go to a convention and ask any artist to draw anything for a fee.

Although from what Bendis was saying we will find out why Star Lord has a new costume and helmet in the next few issues.
