Update: the retailer in question as replied to my last message, saying that I am right, and has apologised for any offence caused. He/she then re-sent my purchase receipt, so I guess the pigments are on their way?
Moral victory for the Fin!

Okay - here we go, some real progress for a change! The laser cutting experiment worked, although I should probably have played around with the power settings a bit to see if I could get them even crisper, but I only had the two small sheets of plasticard to play with, and bugger me it's expensive, so I had to go with what I had.
And the results aren't too bad at all - certainly a lot neater and quicker than me doing it with a scalpel, that's for sure. So, the plan is to get these on some bases, and then file off the excess - they're a bit bigger than the tops of 25mm bases at the moment. Then I'll stick on some of the blade shapes I also cut out, and then I'll have to decide whether to paint them separately, or stick the minis on and do them all in one go. I'm leaning toward separately at the moment. WHEN my day-glow pigments finally arrive, I'll do the lower part of the base/the cut out bit very bright indeed so it's as if the floor is underlit - also gives me the opportunity to do some sourced lighting on the minis.
One repeat on the bases as one of my original shapes was just too flimsy and it snapped coming off the sheet, but I can live with that.

Nice, they look good.
Did you keep the bits you cut out of those, coz they may be useful in the future?

some of them, yeah, if they popped out whole. Some of them didn't, but they weren't vital to the plan, so what bits I do have are nice extras

I can sense someone making a profit from DE inspied bases :-) hmmmmm if only someone had some individual designs they could utilize? ........

Let me rant for a moment Dakka chums.

I ordered some pigments from an online store at the start of the month, and when they hadn't arrived almost two weeks later, I e-mailed the store politely asking if they had a dispatch date. The reply I got was that they hadn't been dispatched, but would be the next day.
Not overly pleased at that, but I wasn't in a huge rush, and at least they were on their way.
Ten days later, still no pigments, so I e-mailed the company again asking for a tracking number. After a day, I got a reply with the tracking number as well as:
"I would suggest you to just have some patience "

I've just replied in a polite, yet annoyed way saying that I have already shown patience, especially considering the delays in that product already and that I expect prompt service from retailers, not advice to be patient. (the products still haven't arrived btw)
Now, is this just me pushing further into Grumpy Old Manhood, that I'm being narky about a flippant reply from a retailer to a product that hasn't arrived 24 days after the purchase date? I told a couple of friends about it tonight over dinner and they were outraged... I was a bit gobsmacked myself when I read it yesterday, and it still seems an incredible thing for a service provider to say to a customer. I'm actually a little impressed with myself for not replying immediately and with considerably more venom and vitriol than I did. Am I over reacting?

... rant over.

I also had a go on the laser cutter yesterday and got some stuff cut out - I'll try and do a proper update tomorrow with some pics for you.

Which retailer was it, out of interest? The laser cut bases look bad-ass btw.

the Plan for the bases: a dark metallic grey and the cut out shapes are going to be neon light sources, so they're going to be a lot brighter... possibly think along lightsabre lines. They'll also have DEldar blade-like shapes sticking up out of them as well.

Neon Cyans, Greens and purples would fit best I think.

I haven't really nailed down what the DEldar's paint scheme will be yet, but yes, I was thinking along those lines too. I don't want clashing colours, I want them to harmonise to a certain extent... having said that, I change my mind every five minutes, so who knows what they'll turn out like

I'm torn at the moment Urien - in my head I see them as quite dark, with black body suits and dark metallic armour with a greenish tint to it.... not terribly exciting or original to say the least. Maybe putting some bright markings on the armour or the suits...?
Option B is to do them with a splash of my Craftworld orange on them somewhere to show that they're an allied unit.

Option C, as you suggested is to go for something bright, but I'm not sure how I'd pull that off.
Dark metallic armour and bright body suit...? I worry that if I do that, they're going to look a bit unbalanced due to the kitbashing. Lots more though required!

if memory serves, I think I just did a wash of Gryphs Sepia over a white undercoat and then probably a highlight of white...

Simple :O wonderful. My DE are going to be mainly white im trying to find effective ways of doing it for an entire army so I found that dire avenger to be rather inspiring xD

Do you think the same effect would work with other washes for example if I were to use a blue in place of the sepia?

it should, yes - bear in mind that I was working with the old washes, and the new ones work slightly differently, but the technique is the same. It probably wouldn't hurt to thin them down a bit, then you can control the darkness you want more by doing more thinner layers.

And we all know Fin loves multiple thin layers!! :-)

I think perhaps you should leave a splash of orange in your DE to show their allied, not sure where yet probably need to have another look at your mini's primed to work something out?

how are you feeling about them now? still got the buzz for 'em?

now that the bases are coming along, the buzz is coming back, definitely.
I was having a think about them today and I think there does need to be a splash of brightness somewhere, otherwise they're just going to be too dark, especially if the bases are going to be dark(ish) - there needs to be some contrast somewhere.
I'm a bit base-focused at the moment, but I agree with you Nerd, I need to have a good look at them again and see what would be possible and what would look good. (and what could snag me a Golden Demon at the same time!)

When you do your washes, sorry for all the questions xD, but do you wash the entire surface or just the recesses?

I generally dump it over the whole surface - washes for me aren't a very targeted technique. If I want to be more precise, I'd probably just undercoat in the darker tone and then take the time to highlight up to what I wanted. The potential problem with washes is that they might not dry completely smooth - they can be blotchy, so if it's smooth you're after, be prepared to do some highlighting!

With the bases coming along, but seeing as how your sketches didn't show any details of walls or an arena ceiling, I thought you'd enjoy getting the design muscles jogged by seeing Julien Casses' great turorial on making an elven dome.

His blog is in French so I suggest you get Chrome in case you need the instructions translated. What Julien does with milliput and left over sprues is eye-opening.

Enjoy.

that's really rather lovely - thanks for that Dark
I've done most of the greenstuffing I want to do on them, so I'll get a rough shout of them up tomorrow just to show the progress (they look a bit rough because of the 'stuffing!); I've done something similar-ish, I just got the spars cut out on the laser cutter instead of using sprues, but I like what he did with them. (I have trouble getting nice, clean, straight edges with milliput/greenstuff though!)

here's the progress shots of the bases - as you can see, they're fairly rough at the moment, but I'm getting there with the greenstuffing - I just want some nice curves on the bases of the blades so that they look somewhat organic, rather than just having them plonked on. After that I'll be able to do a bit of sanding back and tidying up. Apart from the big blade from some Raider bitz I had, the rest all all blades I drew out in Illustrator and then laser cut at the same time as the bases.

I've just spent my day reading through this blog, and I have to say, there's some really fantastic stuff in here. I'm particularly a fan of the wyches you're working on, and may have to steal the idea wholesale at some point, if I reckon I can do it justice.

The smoothness of your blending, and the patience required for it is incredible, and at first I couldn't believe that it wasn't airbrushed.

well done, and I look forward to seeing more,
