Man, I envy you so much... Yor p&m skills are superb, but that's something to achieve with time and practice. To have so many opportunities to have a stroll with your guys on the battlefield, that's another thing. (My merry men are just sleeping in their shelves for the time when the Kaiser will awake in his mountain again...) The best, though, is to share your hobby with your boys. You are a man of fortune, and everytime I read you had a game with on of your things, I must smile. God bless you and your family!

That's very kind of you to say Hruotland. In fact, the whole reason I get back into 40k after a 6-year break was because my son came home from school all cranked up about it after finding a White Dwarf in the school library (he didn't know I'd ever heard of the game, much less played it)! So not only have I shared my hobby with my boys, but they brought me back to it after I thought I'd set it down for good. You are correct my friend, I am indeed blessed.

Thank you shas... yeah, they did work out pretty well.

I have some progress pics for you today. No I'm not done yet. I'm not very happy about that either as I worked my mother-lovin' *ss off on it this weekend. Frankly I barely made a scratch, but I guess progress is progress. I finished the first round of yellow edge highlighting on the entire tank. I now have to come in with a lighter yellow and put in a second round of highlights and focus points. I then have to do all the black... two shades again. In a fit of pique, I painted the metal on the masts and main exhaust (oh, and painted & added the main exhaust). I worked on the captain a bit, as well as a 1-shot cannister bomb (S5, large blast). It's not very points efficient so I don't know how much I'll use it. but it looks cool.

Here's a close-up showing the stack & cappy.

Here's the canister bomb. It swivels about 270 degrees so it covers most of the approach lanes. It's just pinned in place so I could place it anywhere really. This just seemed to be the most practical.

Getting there...

I'm working on the top of the mast & there will be one more grot crewman for the starboard side of the ship.

Mostly, on my phone.

Looks smashing. The spokes on the front wheel could maybe do with a contrast? Also, there's a number of vaguely U-shaped pipecables - are they going to treated separately? Just some thoughts!

I'd considered that (the spokes). Thought I'd see what it looked like as-is before going the next step. I think you're right though.

Same goes for the cables. I don't want to ruin the dazzle effect by adding in too many random colors. Kind of a tightrope walk... adding interest without undoing the main theme.

wowowowowow! Gits, that's fantastic!

Picking out the spokes does sound like a good plan. Visually it'd make it sharpen up and give more interest to the rest of the scheme. Unsure what to do about the cabling, though.... It certainly is a balancing act. One or two might not go amiss in a blue or a red.

Looking good there, Gits'.

My "go to" colour for cables is often gloss black. That will let you keep the general black and yellow scheme, but should let the cables stand out as separate things.

If they do look a little boring after that, make some of them coloured. Spread out, they shouldn't detract from the scheme.

Got to make a little progress tonight. I apologize for the size of these pics... I just seem to have cropped them to the wrong dimensions and pixel size... they're huge! Hmmm... I think I'll spoiler them for you.

Began work on the Crow's nest. Only the lookout, flag and eye on the skull left to do. (sorry for the blurry pic)
Spoiler:

Added another lookout to give the starboard deck some interest and color. (yes, I did paint the spokes)

Gits, the grot tank looks awesome. how many hours do you have in the paint job thus far?

Thanks guys!

@GdS: Oh Lord. You're going to depress me now. What's it been... 3 weeks? Painting for an hour or two most nights plus two weekends? This has been a *very* time consuming paint job, much more so that I originally thought. I keep telling myself that it's "almost done"... and it's not of course. As with the big squiggoth, I think I'm going to paint this to a "clean" standard... i.e. sans chipping and weathering so I can move on to the next in a long line of projects. I can (and will) come back to it later to give it the final touches that'll really sell it as a grot construct when I've got the mental "space" to approach it with creativity and a clear mind.

didn't mean to depress you...whatever it took, it was worth it, because it looks awesome. just figure your paint hours times two is how long it would take ME to paint something...

Actually the green of the grots do a lot to break up the Yellow and Black. Very nice. Sounds like time to take a break from it.

I *am* getting close. Crows nest, hoses & cables and some extra exhaust bits (still in the bag). Maybe done tonight, tomorrow night at the latest.

I think I'll do a simple project next. Three old-school lifta droppa artillery pieces. Quick and dirty paint job on nice bases should suffice & give me a new, very useful unit in a short period of time.

I wanted to comment on this because it points out specifically what I'm after. If you look at the photos of real dazzle pattern ship paint jobs... they go out of their way to make sure nearly everything matches the pattern. Too much off-pattern stuff and the scheme just doesn't work. So my struggle has been to find more "natural" ways of adding interest while keeping the basic pattern as pure as possible. The blue of the rokkits and the crewmen do this nicely. I think a few red hoses and exposed cables will also work. The white on the rims and the checkerboard patterns on the side sponsons are also part of this idea. It just dawned on me that I have a good sized bin full of old metal snotlings. I might add one or two just to break things up a bit more.

Wow, Gits. I hadn't taken a good look at this blog since page 30 or so, and boy was it a great ride getting caught up and seeing all the fantastic stuff you've been up to since then! The Squiggoth is probably my favorite model you've done so far in this army. I love that you didn't paint him green for all the reasons previously mentioned. I really think the red skin contrasts well with the yellow plating. I think the land boat is looking really nice. I love the patterning you've done on it.

Keep up the great work! Though we all know that you will.
