WM, if there was a [ shake fist ] emoticon I would use it towards you The irony is palpable.

This thread should stay alive, but we need a class ranking system. I've stood by this thread with serious interest for quite some time, but have a hard time devoting 15-20 hours on a mini to receive something someone spent 40 minutes on. I could spend less time on minis, but c'mon, what's the point then. If art is to be handed over, or traded, it should be reciprocated in a way that is parallel.

Or rather:
My painting > some dude's painting.. therefore I don't want to swap with that dude.

This post probably makes me sound pretentious or A-hole-ish, but that's not my point at all. I participated in a dakka-project where each pantheon/chapter was to be represented with a different dakka user painting one model from each chapter/legion,

**ie: WM360 was to paint one Iron Warrior
IceAngel was to paint one Imperial Fist
Moltar was to paint one Word Bearer**

Which I did. The bloke was awesome. He's still in my gallery. I put a ton of time into him. Was he my best sh*t ever? No, but that didn't stop me from trying. His base(though minimal), his Power Armor, and most importantly, his face looked awesome. Once submitted, he joined the ranks of a bunch of scrubs who were phoned-in by their (volunteering) painters. The lot were sold at auction and proceeds supposedly went to charity, although I don't think anyone found out if there was a charity. For the record, I don't expect that [dakka user] pocketed the profits.

My point is, I don't want to paint a masterpiece to see it shipped off and in return I get a blotchy, over-coated half-ass space marine.

I really do want this thread, more than any other, to fight for its existence. The concept is beyond phenomenal, but I think it lacks a certain angle to help people stay involved. Some of that would involve a little humility. I, by all means, do not consider myself one of the better painters on dakka, FAR FROM IT. However, with +20 years painting experience, I can solidly say, that I do have some skill. If we had a way to measure that, I think this thread could build upon itself and become something more than a thread. I think it could shape dakkadakka. That might be a stretch, but we've seen a few deathwatch squads come from nothing but this thread alone. THAT'S IMMENSE. No one else has that. At the same time, no one wants 9 of their 10 man squad to look balls-awesome and the 10th, pvt Derp, to look a fool. I don't know the what's what and who's who to make this thread live up to it's potential, but I sincerely hope that it can and does.

Maybe that's the 6 pints (+ shots of whiskey) talking, but I really don't want to see this thread go to the wayside.

Nah, makes sense. I've certainly got it on both sides. The marine I got for some of the folks are way above my level, and some way below (not that I am amazing). Some people have done a bit of marine dumping, putting less heart into it or using already done guys they don't need for their list anymore. The best way I've been able to come up with that doesn't put people down or exclude anyone is to let people figure out their own trades, which is why we ask for past work as well as photos of the finished marines for the trade. We've even had a person get burned, I think twice actually. If someone doesn't meet your standards based on previous work, or you get a bad vibe, pass on a trade.

Ya know?

And that's just it. I'm about to leave work, so I don't know the next time I can check in and follow up. [and yes I've been drinking on the job] My point is/was that all should be and are welcome, they just need a checkpoint. Maybe the times I've looked into swapping, the current arsenal of "up for trade" users has been lacking. I'm all for it. All of it. But we need to integrate some kind of curve. The last dakka paint challenge I entered (and crashed and burned in) users got to choose their own painting hierarchy category, ranking them against their peers. Maybe something along those lines would work, where "less skilled" painters can step up to the next level, but only when they're willing to take on the challenge. I don't know how it will, or can, all come together, but I stand behind this thread. I've been absent (in terms of work submitted) on dakka, but will participate where needed to keep the Swap alive. (that is, once I have a proper work station)

i like the idea, I agree sometimes I get models much better than mine and vice versa.

I feel that by doing this though could be detrimental to the idea if it stops people from participating at all, but it is a very interesting idea which I would like to see played out.

I will admit when I started here my painting was not that good, since then I have become much better, but i do at times felt it was an unfair trade in either direction.

I like the idea of a curve, a ranking system of some sort.

Who will rank them though is something to debate, and how people get up to that rank. And other questions arise. For example what if someone is a great modeler, but not a good painter? What section do they get put in. They may offer a highly original model that just lacks some of the painting. How does someone grade them on this scale?

I do like the idea, just don't know exactly how to get it going in a fair and just way.

BTW I also drink at work occasionally, so no judgment there.

I can agree with Moltar on this one, spending a decent time on a model, giving it that little bit of pizazz and getting a mould line covered, blotch of paint seems like a slap to the face.

However,

I want to get my painting out there, so from my perspective I am more than happy to send a model to a Dakka user over seas (or locally) knowing that they will get enjoyment from looking at my painting style and modelling. Not everyone can paint to what I consider my level so who ever I embark into a trade with I go in with zero expectation, I know that any model I send would always be to a level I would be happy with. What ever I got in return I hope would be at their level they are happy with,

God its's hard to type with a hang over.

I feel like I should have a drink before I post in this thread at the moment. I do understand where you are coming from Moltar, I just hope where ever this leads the thread doesn't in any way become a detriment to people who are less experienced. I for one have often traded with others at a higher level then what I can produce but it has only made me a better painter as I get to study the model I've received in return. I've said this before multiple times, I think participating in this thread has directly influenced my painting improvements. I also posted plenty of pictures of what I can do before offering a trade so my swapper knew what they were getting in return.

Perhaps we could have an updated or revised look at the procedure for offering and accepting a trade?

For example, I post a picture of a marine and say, who'd like to trade. Instead of a flood of responses on this thread, everything is held privately via PM's so you don't have to come across as a douche when you turn someone down because you don't like their stuff.
Secondly, I personally make my marines custom for my swap, I don't come to the thread with a pre-made guy. Not that there is anything wrong with that but perhaps that could be a separate category in the swap? Like Moltar said, you want to feel rewarded and pleased with your swap not annoyed that you got a black reach marine for your forgeworld hand crafted master piece that has a custom base to fit the other persons table.

agree with this sentiment. AS well as what Iceangel stated about improving painting styles from seeing other models, it has done so for me.

OIn another note, @ IceAngel, your model that you sent me was stolen from me by a young kid who was with his parents looking over my parents house when they were selling it. I was away at school at the time. Sigh. On that note, can we make another trade? I've become a better painter, so my model to you will be a higher quality paint job.

Man, we're quite the group. Grab a pint and join the discussion!

I wouldn't want any one to feel discouraged from trading or participating either. I also firmly believe that swapping minis, especially ones that are not already completed, would improve anyone's skills. Maybe what we really need is more participants, who are not as skilled, to drive traffic here and get the newer hobbyists to start swapping. This would help increase their skills as well as the sense of community here.

I don't have the answers, just the ranting capabilities.

Ah yeah I would prob have to say something if saw my doctor drinking.
About to go to work, and prob end up with a half pint with lunch, one of the few perks of serving, free drinks and free food.

@moltar: I do think you bring some great points, and maybe we do just need more beginner.painters to facilitate equality among trades and.have.people.improve. but how do we get those people to participate?

Maybe do a competition of some sort with different levels, where you are graded both on your model, and.the one being sent to you, so each trade is competing with other trades rather than individual painters, that would force a.sort of team work.

This sounds fun. (Both the drinking, and the model exchange!) I'd be down for a Marine swap - I have a good number of on-sprue Space Wolves and little inclination to add to the army, so why not!

I believe I have some pics of my work in my gallery... I'll check and if not, will add some. I'm not the best painter in the world but I'm pretty decent.

Incidentally, I'm more of a Tyranid collector than anything else, so if Nid swaps are more your thing, I've gotten pretty good at painting them up

I recently painted these guys. I've also got some other marines kicking around, mostly sergeants and the like, for Lamenters and another DIY chapter. I'd love to swap Marines with someone.

I'd be intrested in trading a painted marine for someone in their chapter colors... This would hopefully get me to try different things with other colors. I enjoyed painting my Mantis warrior for git's MW challenge. Also there was some great variations for Yellowbeards Fire Hawk Challenge.

I can still do a Lamenter if that is what you want. I have many more to do!

Sorry, I was all gun-ho then finals came around and I have no life again.

I will try to get some pics of my current level of painting up within the week, and then hopefully after finals I can really start producing models for this as well as my other projects. Still got full ogre army to prime and paint, and a IG army to organize...sigh.

Got your Marine today. Awesome. Thanks for putting a great model together.I didn't get a chance to get yours out the door. Was amazed by the 3page description of all the gear, history and iconography. And you wanted just a tactical marine? We'll that just won't do.. so I made a little suprise and will send it with my original trade.

I'll take some pics and post them after you get them.

Glad you like him. I try to make up for being only an average painter with trying be above average in regards to fluff and narrative.
