@wehrkind: No worries, I don't listen to podcasts much either. Meeples and Miniatures pretty much the minute a new episode is out but apart from that I don't really listen to wargaming podcasts. Most of them are about GW/Warmarhodes/Flames of War anyway and the tournament scenes that go along with those and I'm rather okay informed about those games anyway from the rest of the internet. I do listen to a bunch of history podcasts and one about films/tv but that's it really.. Sounds interesting. Baaaah, points systems. They're crutches anyway. Keep me updated on how you proceed with your rules set though!

So, what have I been up to..

bunch of WIP Blood Angels. They are of the "you get them assembled" variety, albeit (and much to my surprise) with all the mold lines on the models. The models also may be glued together using GW superglue because the glue is very brittle and parts kept coming off while I cleaned the models up.

Anyway, it's good to paint Space Marines again.

Digging the more subdued scheme. Really makes the metallics and chest laurels stand out nicely.

Very Nice.

I like the boast aspect.. I'll have to try convincing my 40k buds to adopt something for a VP. How fluffy!

Love your stuff Sigur. Are you going to be adding to those Samurai I saw over at warseer any time in the future?

@wehrkind: Thanks!

@Solar_lion: Oh yes, the fact that something kept coming off all the time (mainly arms of course) is rather annoying. I think I got them all glued now though. Yeah, those boasts are a cute thing and can be added to almost any game (at least where it fits). I could see it working for 40k though.

@carlos13th: Thanks, carlos. The samurai popped up in here as well, i'm just not too sure when. Must have been early July this year. I'm definately planning to add to them. Ronin is a really fun game and I'Ve got a lot more minis lying around, I'm just not too sure when I get the time to do so. At the moment I'm really busy with commissions, next year there's a huge Waterloo project coming up to which I contribute figures and my gaming buddy seems to have resurfaced from hibernation and is painting things again so I may have to get my Persians done as soon as he starts painting those Macedons.

Update: (no pics, sorry) Vanguard done, Sternguard done except for three dudes I'll quickly finish now. Then it's off to doing Sanguinary guard.

Sure, no problem. Sorry it took me so long but now I recall your name from Warseer of course! Hope to do more of the Samurai soon, Ronin is a really fun game and the Perry minis are just cool. Speaking of which - I'm introducing a friend of mine to miniature wargaming. Last two times we played Lion Rampant but next time Ronin might be a great other set of rules to give a try to. Should be a good excuse to get some more figures painted too.

It's cool mate. I didn't expect you to remember me. Tbh it was your avatar that made me remember you more so than the user name.

Same here. If anything, I recognize people by avatar rather than by username. But I did recall your name from the Warseer historical plogs board because ....well, the community on there isn't too huge and people who post interesting stuff are slightly fewer.

Right, update! Finally!

@nerdfest09: Cheers, mate! To be honest I had to laugh yesterday when I cropped the pictures and whatnot just how insanely good Space Marines look like in pictures. It's just silly. No huge surprise there are people who will only ever paint Space Marines in their entire lives.

@Littletower: Thanks very much!

@Dysartes: Yeah, he's a funny guy. He reminds me of that one head from the old Ork Boyz multi part platics set with the huge mohawk.

Last night when brushing mah teef I came to several horrible conclusions about my existence, life, death and the universe. To get rid of these thoughts I decided to think of miniatures and came to another, even ore horrifying thought - I remembered that I never posted the finished pictures of the Imperial Armada Freebooter's Fate warband. I converted them to Jpeg but never finished them because I was too busy with preparations for VIVAT. So here we go:

Hard to say anything about these models I haven't said before for about 20 times. They are great minis, amazingly well cast, really solid, characterful sculpts from the hands of a true master. Sure, not everybody likes them but this usually is the mark or goodity. (or suckiness. God, these Kingdom Death models are lame. Laaaaaaaaaaame. Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-haaaaaaaaaammmeeeee! In SO many ways. Contact me if you want me to paint one of your Kingdom Death models for you any time. I'll make you a good price. . Yeah, it's Sunday, so I'm being "opinionated" again. Bear with me, folks. )

@Gitsplitta: Thanks muchly. Glad you enjoy the pictures.

@carlos13th: Oh, good thing you're dropping by. The following update is your fault.

Okay peeps. Tonight I was finished with a commission project, had lotsa newpictures posted and so on, chatted with the guys who I played Ronin with the last time and we talked about what everybody was up to. Chatted with other people and what they were up to and somehow it seemed like everybody was just painting what ever they bloody wanted! A slightly alien concept to me (well, no, not really. Only over the past two, three weeks or so) so I thought I'd give that a go again. Wasn't sure what to do (commission stuffs aside there are still the Perry AWI British to finish for the review, there are some lovely AWI civilians half done and There are LOTS of plastic Frenchmen lined up for painting as well), then carlos13th cought me, asking if I'd add to my Ronin collection any time soon. This got me thinking. As I recently had lured a friend of mine into miniature wargaming (so far he's very enthusiastic about the whole thing. Not that he buys any minis or something like that but he's playing so that's good) and Lion Rampant had shown maybe a certain 'lightness' in terms of being a tactical wargame. It's much fun but for me playing a game more than twice without any change in between is something I'm not really used to any more and it has to be a GREAT rules set for me to play it more often (like chain of command). So I thought for the next step I'd play some Ronin with him. Proper historical game, still rather on the gamey side and with a lot of fun mechanics and chances for fun scenarios, so why not do that next? Of course I've only got one warband finished. So I looked into what I've got left to paint and apart from the amazingly pretty but woefully inferior (ruleswise, in comparison to the "proper army" list) unarmoured samurai there still are a bunch of armoured Samurai and a few Ashigaru. So I got to work on some of them:

The guys in the far left and right are in the regular colour scheme I used for my own red Takeda warband. Now the thing is of course - would I turn them into a fully different warband on their own or should I use just a slight variation on the takeda colour scheme? I opted for the weird middle way of "use the same colour scheme but change the colours". :p So the rich red was gone, replaced with a brown-ish red, added a few more blues and Samurai look very individual anyway. This way I could use them along wtih my dudes but also as their own warband. So yea, these are very WIP and very slow to paint actually because I'm SO unfamiliar with feudal japanese clothing. But getting there.

Hullo! This is no time lapse, it's just the really fully totally finished Blood Angels minis!

What changed is that I added some OSL around the eyes, finished the bases with these obsidian black rocks and added some Baal desert dust around the feet and tabards.

They are Perry Samurai.

Thanks for sharing the update mate. What is your painting method on them?

Vienna, Austria

@wehrkind: Yeah, they're from the Perrys range. Usually the best that's out there.

@carlos13th: Well, my method is incredibly slow, disjointed, doubtful and bit-by-bit as I check 100 tabs of various pictures and osprey books all the time to see if this looks any "right".

I tend to research for hours have a plan of what I am going to do in my head then realise half way throuhg what I can achieve and what is in my head is radically different and just start slapping on paint until it looks ok.

@carlos13th: Yeah, that's very similar to my approach. With some historical projects I get rather picky about details, but when it comes to ancients (come to think of it... I was rather fussy in researching the Persians too, and before that the Hoplites... oh well) or stuff that's "far away" in the hitorical timeline and such and sources are scarce and possibly wrong anyway it's often better to go with what we know or what looks good (without going into total fantasy territory).

Way too late into Monday I forged two warbands of about equal points values out of the models I have so I can proceed to paint the models required. Here are some more (one of the two Spear armed samurai you already saw earlier):

In other news: GW got a new CEO. Nah, I got actual news too: I painted an Iron Hands test mini:

I know it's a clichée, but: He looks better in real life.Very differently to the Blood Angels, I went with a very dark, kind of grimey look. Because what the heck else would you do with the Iron Hands not-colour scheme? I have NO idea who came up with it but it sure as heck wasn't someone who enjoys 40k for the visual side of things. No, I'm just kidding. I just felt like going for a different look on that one. Let's see what the customer says. The only guideline was "Iron Hands and make the bases battlefield like".

Loving your painting work mate. Especially the unarmoured guy. I hope i can one day paint as quickly and well as that.

Though I would say perry were the second best Samurai models. Steel fist getting first place.

Dangit, Sigur, now you've got me wanting to pick some of those Samurai up and paint them in L5R Clan colours - do they come with bases, out of interest?

Also, if you get chance, could you talk us through how you paint an Asian skin tone?

That warband is full of awesome looking models. I will have to check them out in more detail. Look like tons of fun to paint.

Those perry ones come with small integral bases. See the raised area on the base? I think thats the integral.

Looks like Sigur based them on pennies, or maybe small washers.

@wehrkind: Thanks!

@carlos13th: Yeah, Steel Fist stuff looks gorgeous, but they got this rather limited choice of models so I didn't want to bother with ordering from two sources. I just wrote an article with a general overview of models available for playing Ronin and made sure to mention Steel First. In fact it's a whole little series of articles on the game. Not sure when we launch the site but I'll make sure to let you know!

@Dr H: Thanks, much appreciated!

@Dysartes: Nope, they don't really come with bases. As carlos13th said, they (like all Perry figures) come with bases cast onto their feet which is a think I quite like. I glue them to pennies (still got more than enough of those from back when I lived in the UK) or 5 euro cents pieces.

@Sageheart: Painting them was quite disheartening at first. I cleaned and assembled them, put them on bases, took my brush and realized: I have no bloody clue what an Ashigaru or Samurai looks like. I mean I had this idea what they looked like but what their armour looks like in detail and such - i blanked completely. This was followed by lots and lots of research about a culture which seemed kind of alien to me. I still have only faint ideas about Samurai and such but I'm learning.

Second Buntai finished!

Hope you like them!
