Sadly the "pre-loved" miniatures always seem to appear as though they were in abusive relationships.
I got 2 squads of guardsmen and a sentinel from a class mate in exchange for $20 and a physics textbook (its not like the bookstore was going to buy it back for more than 1/10th is value).
I'm pretty sure he must have primed them in a commercial deep-freeze, because it was some of the chalkiest primer I've ever seen. Thankfully after hours of scraping and a head swap for one who was too disfigured to save, a coat of krylon primer made them look good as new.

I've now learned that sometimes saving a few bucks with second hand minis may not always be worth the time investment to return them to a usable state.
It amazes me some times what people consider passable as far as paint jobs go. I guess there's a good reason for the "Thin your paints"meme on /tg/.

Good work on the salvaging. I quite like rebuilding stuff that's been totaled, its a challenge. However as you say not always worth it.

I've used the spare armoured and semi armoured cabs from the Sentinel kit that I had to replace the camo netted roll bars of 2 of the new Sentinels, this also covers up the almost impossible to removed glued in horrible Catachan drivers. The remainder will be a Scout Sentinel.

That will give me 3 Armoured and 2 Scout. I think with the new vulnerability of vehicles Armoured is the way to go, I'll probably only use them in all out Apoc games anyway.

I worked out my EVERYTHING Apocalypse list last night and including an Ordos Xenos Inquisitor and 2 Assassins (otherwise all from Codex IG) I will be able to do 4400. I just need 2 HKs and 2 Valkyrie door gunners.

I think I'll just keep going until I do all of this it's 'only':

Finish the lascannon battery (nearly done)
Paint and slightly convert 3 new Sentinels
Paint the Inquisitor and 2 Assassins
Paint and slightly convert Commissar Lord
Paint and convert 2nd (6 man) Stormtrooper unit

I'm sure that will fly by................................................................

This is the Inquisitor I'll be using, nice old RT era guy, I've had him for ages, still got the 'Ordos Malleus Daemon Hunter' he came packed with.

Always liked Assassins, these guys can give a bit of edge in big games.

I haven't had much toy time recently, I have been rebuilding those Sentinels and done a little more painting on the lasers will do some pics soon!

Hiya, a little update on the Sentinels.

Here we can see them uparmoured and upgunned.

I snipped away the roll bars and replaced them with the fully armoured cab I had from when I bought my first one (which I built as a Scout). The new sprue can make any of the 3 styles and so I had the cabs spare. I mounted a Plasma Cannon for those pesky 3+ boys (and hopefully not overheating).

I also had this front plate spare. I mounted the little targeter in the bottom corner and the mini safe thing is magnetised and is awaiting a SM HK to mount on it.

I also cut away the cab here. using the 'semi armoured' cab. It's equipped the same as my other painted heavy Sentinel and will form a squadron with the above to make a unit of 3. I bitz ordered the front plate and Lascannon which is magnetised to accept any gun. I was unable to remove the Multi laser powerpack but my other finished Sentinel has one too so at least they match.

Magnetised cabinet again mounting a SM HK (my last one). The bar under his foot is supposed to be being bent by him stepping on it.

Scout Sentinel. He's not yet glued in the ankles or hips yet hence looking odd. As they were partially glued I couldn't mess with their stances much. Multi laser is magnetised, again the powerpack wont be removed, not really a problem though.

This guy will give me 2 Scout Sentinels. I left him as the open topped as he wasn't the roid raging Catachan guy like the others were. The cab is pretty messed up still due to over gluing but it should be ok once painted. Also needs a HK, mount is magnetised. I ordered a front plate and a tiny Sentinel smoke launcher to make him match my existing one.

I've had very little fun time recently but hope to get these guys done soon. I have finished my lasers and will do some pics soon.

Done some more on the Sentinels, but have lost impetus with them (might be as I'm painting 3 at a time).

This is just after being inked, so highlighting and detailing to go...

As a change of pace I've done more on these guys..

Been nice to paint something different..

His on/off girlfriend (she's a bit unstable and 2 faced really).

Here's some pics (not great ones) of my Lascannon Battery. They've been more trouble than they're worth but at least their finally done..

The unit.

Peeking round, I gave them yellow goggles to be similar to military visors.

With generator and binocs.

Pushing the button, they are using trimmed down Auspex units to control their robo guns.

That's all for now, I've nearly finished the Assassins and will get some pics up soon..will either go back to the Sent's or do some more characters next..see you later!

Very keen to see what you do with that inquisitor. I loved that twinpack of minis, the psycannon in it is one of my favorite bits, as is the jokero digital bling on that power fist.

(Just a footnote, if you do take him with termie armor, he'll need a grown ups base nowadays... )

I'm thinking of doing him the same as the Stormtroopers, shiny black armour; little red lights on stuff, red and white shoulder with Psycorps logo...might get called Bestor.

I can't actually equip him with Termie armour, but I think that what he's wearing basically constitutes power armour these days, I think he's a bit small for a 40mm base. But being an Ordos Xenos (the only type I'd use) he can actually use a Needle Pistol which is pretty awesome.

I've finally decided what to do with this guy as well, I was going to use him and the 4 Valk door gunners I have to make a CCS but that would now give me 6 CCS and PCS units when I only have 6 Infantry squads. I will make him into a Commissar Lord instead. I think he'll look nice in black and I can add a cap (place holder blue tack version seen here).

I should be able to get hold hold of some more Valk door gunners and make a small 2nd Stormtrooper unit (all donations greatfully received!).

A warning, Randy: The valk Door Gunners do NOT lend themselves to a good-looking squad. It is VERY difficult to repose them.

I know what you mean, they're a bit shorter too.

I'll post up a pic of the blue tacked concept guys I have,4 blokes. I plan to get another 2 or so and have a small plasma toting deep strike suicide squad of only 6 guys, so the repetitive nature of the torsos doesn't glare as much. I don't mind them a bit stiff, they're supposed to be Storm Troopers!

Here's the finished Assassins..

I'm pretty pleased with them. Both their jumpsuits are highlighted with Shadow Grey which is slightly blue, the kit (Guns etc) is adding Fortress Grey instead.

I've included this pic as well as it's got better focus. After taking these pics I managed to knock the Callidus over and the Phase Sword snapped off (note the damage/faultline is visible on the above pics and there must have been a prior repair, 2nd hand model) I saw the blade drop and then vanish...

At least I have some pics for posterity. I've looked for it but it's so tiny and it fell though the gap of the shelf and could have gone anywhere. I'll have another look as a 60mm base just vanished recently too.....Poltergeist? Bermuda Man Cave?

They look great, even if your basing for that poor vindicare leaves me worried for his crown jewels, dangling precariously above razorwire in nothing but a spandex bodysuit!

I've nearly finished my giant ork kommissar and am pondering how to paint his greatcoat and highlight it, perhaps I'll go the shadow grey way, not sure. Just need a whole grey knight to strap to his back banner...

Shame about the blade coming off. Perhaps consider some dark eldar blade or something? It may be easier to just replace the hand and weapon rather than try to fix a blade onto the hilt.

I'd love to see your 'Nob', any pics? Yeah Shadow Grey highlights black loverly, I think the above is 3 layers.

I like the idea of using a blade off something else, a short sword from somewhere (maybe a Wood Elf one, I have those) might work out...I don't want to take the hand off if I can avoid it.

Here are some Work in Progres shots of my current projects.

My Commissar Lord, will need to think of a name, I added the basic cap shape, hopefully this is the last green stuff cap I build for a long time, and a purity seal. I'll be going over the cap again to add the details.

I'm thinking of adding a big cape to the guy to bulk him out a little and make him look more 'Commissar Lordy'. I'd do a fur collar much like the current GW version. What do you think?

Here's a (bad) pic of the Inquisitor, he's about 70% painted, I'll try and get some nice pics once he's finished.

These are the (very early versions of) the other Stormtroopers. The crap on the Sarg's head is supposed to be a beret. The plasma gunners will have weapons made out of pistols to give them plasma carbine kind of things, They are all Valk door gunners and I hope to get 2 more completing the small suicide squad. I think with adding a bit of kit (and platform shoes) they'll be ok.

I've lost interest on the Sentinels for now, will probably pick them up after the 2 Characters are painted. This lot will complete my current IG efforts, I'm looking forward to finally finishing this force (for now at least)

Those are looking good, the inquisitor is coming together well.

Something that does kind of stand out to me, re that cadian officer model, is that once you put the cap on him and especially with the idea of a heavy cloak, that officer 'gets short', not sure how to explain it but once you raise the head with the hat and spread out the silhouette with the bulk of the cloak, his legs look too short, perhaps a raised base or something might help with it.

he has a large head/face i think and the cap makes it look bigger .give him garry glitter style platform boots :]

also a trick you could use when hightlighting black like you have (alongside greys) is use a turquoise added to the black to give you a sense of cold/hard/nonorganic and use a dwarf flesh like colour to highlight the black if you want a warm/soft/organic effect like leather etc

Yes I think glitter style platforms are a good idea, I'm away for a week but I think he'll pry off his base ok. I think I will do the heavy cloak it adds more gravitas.

Yeah I like blue tones in a black highlight, makes it much more interesting for dark jumpsuits equipment etc.

I've not had the time to do any pics but I have squeezed in some modelling over the last while. I hope to get some photos done over Easter. I got the lend of a light tent I want to try out...

I've finished my Sentinels and the Inquisitor and built the Commissar Lord and new Stormtroopers....hopefully be showing then off soon!
