will come back later on to that discussion...

my wife got the zeppelin shown by me... and she raised the question of the gondola and "blimp" together... she stated the gondola looks not the same style as the blimp... then I told her about one idea someone (forgot who exactly) here mentioned... the gondola could have two wings and be a sort of separate flyer...

now discuss this... as I need some serious input on that issue... I am game to everything... so let the brains smoke and let there be some answers... I will be back... and if I don´t get enough answers of my think tank here there will be a reckoning!!!!

cheers, vik

Separation sequence? Awesome! Just don't leave the ship's counsellor in charge.

I would don't wing the gondola. The gondola has enough going on. The blimp part needs more to bring it up to the gondolas standard of matching. I suggest you do your awesome detailing you have been doing the Gondola with!

A separation sequence doesn't sound beneficial to ze blimp IMO.

There's two options with that thought:
Make it so the blimp and gondola can separate (probably due to the flight stands, the blimp can just be lifted off). However, you would then need the gondola to have two "modes"; one where it is attached to the blimp and the other where it's flying under it's own steam( ). That would require collapsible wings of some kind, etc...
You also wouldn't want to add any connecting wires etc.. between the blimp and gondola otherwise you'd need methods of making them all separate (although magnets would be an obvious choice to make this happen).

Or
Make it look like the two can separate but not model them so they do actually separate. That only requires some clamps modelled on the the join and collapsed wings added to the gondola. Then you can be as complicated as you like (with wires/hoses/pipes) and not worry about how to actually remove the blimp from the gondola...

Soooo, what's the point in giving out awesome ideas if you're forgotten so soon eh?

And back to the topic...

I think one of the reasons your wife might think so are the hexagon windows you like so much. The problem in my opinion is that there are 2 of them and they are aligned in an "eye" pattern making the gondola look like some kind of insect. Like a big dragonfly. That's fine with me as it kinda create a steampunkish version of LEXX

but she still got the point - somewhat mixed style.

The obvious possible solution is to make one window or to rotate them to vertical pattern. I actually would suggest rotating 'coz that way the piloting crew would have a better view on the ground . Like on this plane:

the second issue - the relatively small baloon for that gondola. That's a bigger problem, but i can see a solution in making a second identical baloon and hangin the gondola between the two. Like here:

Hope that'll help somehow

Not where I should be

I think you could maybe make it look like the gondola is separate and can fly under it's own steam. Swing wing effort with similar to your current tail fins. And either giant rocket engines or props mounted horizontally. Keep the vertical ones you have, but 2 horizontally mounted backward facing Rokkits. Anyone remember the airship from 3dmark 6th edition, I think it was. Very steam punk.

Put an upper deck to the gondola and suspend it slightly, two rokkit engines and away she goes.

Camkierhi wrote:NO DISTRACTIONS!!!!

Love the tail fins. All looking great.

Not wishing to re-ignite old discussion, but the Tesla coil could be "grounded" by a "keel" type arrangement and the lightning grounding to the earth, would maybe act as your stand for the beast. Kinda like an upside down tree, branching across the ground from a central ball on a keel beneath the gondola!! Just my 2 pence.

They call it flipper, flipper....I forget the rest. But seriously you could put the tesla coil on the front sticking up and it would look like a narwhals.

and there you are again with a great idea... i will look into that tomorrow first thing in the morning!!! (but we skip that flipper meme...)

i am a bit confused about their range... is it 30mm or even 90mm??? i was looking and couldn´t find a clear statement about the scale... and... it was rather upsetting to see peter or holmes to be bad guys...

hahaha! good one mister...but remember on a british military vessel there are no big bewbed crew allowed

actually i share totally your views on this one... no wings on the gondola... and seperating them is not really my intention... my wife gave me some serious issues of uncertainty... sometimes needed tho^^

tho having written the above the idea has a lot to be said for...if i can invest in some mock up time i will explore this idea some more...

the last idea is sounding interesting... but no functon would mean more hassle with no actual benefits than rule of cool and i think atm has already pumping around as it is... tho i apreciate the thought...

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

So you ask for some critique / feedback / suggestions, here it is...

Your dirigible / blimp / zeppelin reminds me of this;

Looks okay, but a bit dainty - sure this image has no dakka or 'Vik style' but it's what I would imagine yours will end up looking like...

Then I saw your little wings and this came to mind...

But, TBH, I don't like either of them. I'm just not convinced that these are the right direction for your wondorous creation, yes it's steampunk, but it's not Vik Steampunk...

So then I got to thinking and stumbled over this...

Yes, it's a total restyling / rebuild but it looks A.W.E.S.O.M.E. It even has a shark face and 'uge bombs, so win, win. Could do with more dakka and rivets, but that's an easy fix for you

hopefully it will look sharp enough afterwards

here are some pics... and to make it better grasped... even some scaleshots of working men on the drydocks^^

note: the material i use for this is colored cardboard... it comes in rather wide sheats and is sturdy enough... well sturdy enough for two sides each length anyway...

Liked the ribbed look vik. The article page is weird, it scrolls sideways on my iPad, took me a few times loading it for it to work. Basically the us military is testing a new system that will bring back airships if it works correctly. It pressurized the helium instead of releasing it out to maintain heights. To me it sounds like a ballast system in submarines. Testing was to be in 2012-2013.
