well the final decisions have been made by me... there will be a grot army made by me... i will work on this from time to time now... so that peglegged pirate is bound to happen...!... i have one squigg... but that one probably needs to be scratchbuild / greenstuffed ....ARRRRR^^

so...i rpomised more pics... well i give you two updates for one...

at first i drybrushed the whole build with boltgun metal...:

but then i added black and white... see for yourself...hope you like them^^

i have to be extra careful with the painting process... if i am careless the paint comes off... sadly while being very precise with brush on primer... the primer isn´t that trusty as i had hoped for... the model thus needs extra sealing later on...

cheers, vik

Not where I should be

Sorry for saying the same thing all the time, but brilliant. Looks great.

Not sure, but for future reference, a coat of pva as a pre-primer may have helped. Or sanding the deo. I take it, it is the deo giving you a problem.

Looks brilliant though, is it staying black and white? Goff-esk.

Can't wait to see your Grot army come along.

see... i wanted to check what kind of orky army would use that scheme... thanks cam!...

and well yes... the deo part is indeed the main problem here... that soft and slick surface just doesn´t want the paint that much ... but a coat of PVA i already had thought about too... hmm... the details are that thick anyway that a coat more wouldn´t hurt... that is the best thing with scratchbuilding... the details are mostly that thick no hurt in doing thick coats of paint and no fear in loosing any details thus!

and... i have absolutly nothing against brilliance

Vik, if this grot army will be attacking your steampunk army then it needs BLUE. Just to shove I in the queens face. Will this be the "Black Baron"? He could be the grot flying ace who always needs a new sidekick or two after each battle as they become bombardiers.

Blue/Deathskulls would also seem to fit Vik's general tendencies:
"The Deathskulls (sometimes written as Death Skulls) are an Ork clan of looters who grab whatever they can from corpses on the battlefield, although they aren't above taking things from other Orks who aren't watching. They collect anything that might be useful, as well as various lucky trinkets and charms, and even junk and whats-its that "might come in 'andy later'". Deathskulls would make capable scientists and excellent engineers if their fascination for new things lasted longer than the time it took to steal them." (from the Lexicanum)

I say 1 of two.

Blood axe random camo. It always goes well, and will challenge your color pallet. They use purple to green camo and all inbetween. Second I would have to say deff-skulls, blue and white.

hmmm... i dunno if i am a good enough painter to do camo on small modells...

no painting done today... tho... i took cam´s hinto to heart to strengthen the overall structure and the longlivety of my painting by adding a coat of diluted PVA to the whole model... it worked like a charm... thanks mister for suggesting this to me!!! i first hesitantly aplied the mix to the underside... this is due to the stand a rather heavy trafficed part of th model... and more and more i added PVA to the mix so that now i think it has a rather strong sealing coat... i think the more earnest painting can happen now...

so again... think about the blue i should use... i am very much undecided atm...

cheers, vik

This is what I read with those colour names

I would say, If you have a painted grot laying about in the green that you intend. Then paint a few scraps of card/plastic and see which looks best next to the grot. Rather than painting on a blue and then painting the grots and sticking them in and finding it doesn't look right.

Metallic blue would be nice if it works though.

They are yellow man! Nothing beats yellow!

If I'm not mistaken, Kaptin Badruk - the most famous ork pirate, was a badmoon, they excel at trading and what's the point of robbing and looting if you can't get it off your hands

And by marine song you mean something like this:
Me nutt 'now butt me been told
Da hummies purse be full of gold!

Not where I should be

As to the blue, I have in the past had the old ork commandos, and for some reason everyone painted them with either a bright red, or a turquoise camo. The turquoise really clashed with the green horribly, which made it even better. But a traditional Deathskullz colour would be nearer ultramarine blue, I am afraid.

The metallic sounds interesting, got that paint myself. Love the colour.

I think you need some swatches to test colour combo's. If your keeping the black and white, blue will not really fit in. Orange, yellow, red yes. But give us some swatches to see where your mind is going please.

Oh and just a thought, but you mentioned metallic, how about just a deep gold trim, on the black and white. Show how rich they are.

The secret of painting yellow is simple: you need a good opaque foundation paint. E.g., I use Citadel Tausept Ochre - it's a very solid basecoat paint, which is good for undercoating even for white.
Dilute it 1:1 and you'll get a great yet thin coverage. You can add a bit less water (1:0.5) for a better covering, but there's always a risk of getting very thick layer which can hide the details, so keep an eye on it.
Just use any needed yellow tone to get the desired colour afterwards - will be very easy with such a solid basecoat.
A brighter foundation browns might work too.

By the way, an awesome plane you've made! GJ! I like the stand - nvery clever idea!

When I started my Imperial Fists, it took me one model to determine I wazsn't doing yellow right. It ended up looking all right, but it took forever and I realize the more paint you have to put on to get the color right, the more you risk losing detail. I had used Iyanden Darksun as my base, and on my next set of models, I used an airbrush with the paint diluted down to give me a good basecoat over white primer. It gave a much smoother and even coat. Then I used the brighter yellows to bring it up and I think it looks much better and still looks the same shade as the first model.

Yeah, I personally like the more orange-y Golden Yellow of a lot of IF, so I used Iyanden as my basecoat, and then built up to the Golden Yellow. It's not the mustard yellow some IF are, but it isn't too bright either. I like it a lot.
