Inspirational stuff!

I always loved the Adeptus Arbites! I have the old Necro books and even the one with the Arbites list and picture of that Mike McVey RPC.

Think Chaos Dwarfs suck? Think again.

Brilliant. I have some made like that too - my Scout bikers were done that way, and there are a squad of Snipers coming who are made the same way. I press-molded the heads and shoulder pads of the originals to make them look the same and it works pretty well!

Yeah I have a couple bikers like that I have been experimenting with. Sadly I find the Cadian torsos are slightly too narrow for the scout arms so I need to greenstuff or plasticard the gaps and it can look a bit off.

Oh, also I have found that the cultist leader from the DV set makes a great Arbiter/Judge.

Just a little bump as I broke out the Arbites to play a few games in our Badab War campaign.

++ AFTER ACTION REPORT Stardate 0183002104M40 ++

By the glory of the God-Emperor and his most holy Lex Imperia, Arbites Assayance Fleet 404/D dispatched under the command of Judge Ian with a warrant for the arrest of the entire Lamenters chapter, pending their inevitable guilt in the eyes of the law (Lex 41033206X0/F Tithe Avoidance).

His most glorious forces were assaulted by the guilty party on Rock 844DF7703/A (Lex 110554/E4 Common Assault, Lex 110554/E5 Assault with an Exploding Ballistic Weapon, Lex 1701/AA4 Actions Leading to Improper Procedure in a Low Oxygen Environment) requiring immediate action be taken and terminal defensive manoeuvres be implemented (Lex 10402 Interfering with Approved Plans of the Imperial Arbites).

Initial actions with Suppression Teams were repressed before cyberhound reinforcements apprehended the criminal (in the eyes of the law, praise be the God-Emperor) infantry elements. (Lex 2744026/AH Resisting Arrest, Lex 1103475 Refusing to Fall Over when Apprehended by Arbites Equipment, Lex 3201/TT Wilful Damage to Arbites Equipment sp/teeth). Lamenters Dreadnought elements hindered the operation before being laid low by Arbites heavy siege equipment (refer to: Lex 1033.4/A/M Health and Safety in a Low Ceilinged Environment, M34 - Section 402: Maximum recommended height of robot stomping equipment)

An assault was made by a Lamenters Terminator squad lead by one Chaplain Stanley Deiros (203, Male, no fixed address), the entire squad seeming to be in a state of heightened duress and emitting battle-cries from their armour augmitters. (Lex 1033.2/R Breaching of The Peace, Lex 99204 Verbal Abuse of an Arbites Officer).

The terminator sergeant has been apprehended by our suppression teams and awaits questioning and 'trial' at your earliest convenience, where his guilt will no doubt be confirmed in the eyes of the Lex Imperia.

Praise be the God-Emperor.

I feel it necessary to point out that if either the game had ended one turn earlier, or my scout sergeant had passed a 4+ save with the very last roll of the game, I would have won.

THREE YEARS LATER

It’s 2018 and I think the Arbites are due a bit of an update. I’ve been playing them regularly in the yearly Silent War narrative events organised between HATE Club and Bristol, and I even took them to the 40k doubles last year. Since 8ed was released I’ve been using them as DKoK with ministorum allies (DKoK Grenadiers being the only shotgun, carapace and ‘veteran’ stat models out there, and their special rules fitting pretty well for Arbites).

I’m gonna update their vehicle pool first, and then start repainting the models as my painting style has changed a lot in the past few years. I’m also planning to convert some generic female Arbites bodies so my army can be as mixed as all the books suggest they are. This might be a slow grow, though, as I’m expecting a set of GW rules for basic Arbites squads the minute they’re released in Necromunda!

So, before Silent War 2018 kicks off, lets get some Arbites vehicles built! Here’s two Aquila Landers I’ve had sitting in a box for ten years! Like all old FW kits, they’re an absolute arse to put together, but once they’re built they look pretty good!

Hi ArbitorIan, I’ve followed this blog for ages and it’s great to see it back! Can I ask what kind of list you are thinking of using in 8th? I have a small force of Arbites I need to repaint as well but can’t think how I could use them in 8th. I like the Krieg Engineers but unfortunately about half my arbiters have Boltguns.

Yup, totally masking taped. And then with all the weathering gunk brown at them. There’ll be more of all of that coming on the Chimeras.

Yeah, it’s an absolute fether at the moment. As far as I can tell, the options are:

- Militarum Tempestus Scions : veteran stats & carapace armour. However, you have to pretend ‘hotshot lasgun’ means ‘executioner ammo’ and the deep striking you’re paying for is actually a bit useless. You’d have to ride around in Tauroxes to get any benefit, as Chimeras means you lose the MT doctrines. No bolt guns unless you give all the boltgunners riot shields and use them as Sisters of Battle, who have the same stats, but then you end up with a load of confusing special rules as one half of your army have different rules and transports form the other. Use crusaders for suppression teams, as always.

- Astra Militarum Vets - as above, except you lose carapace armour and gain shotguns.

- DKoK Engineers - the best all round option. Veteran Stats, special shotgun ammo, thematic gas grenades and their special regimental rules actually work really well for Arbites. Again, you have to use chimera-based vehicles and all the sisters stuff applies. To get bolt guns you have to take sisters and give them all shields or something for the 3+ save. The other big issue here is that, in matched play, they’re Elites choices and thus can’t be taken more than three times!

- Space Marine Scouts - ok, you get carapace armour, shotguns, bolt guns, bikes, rhinos AND snipers, and even land speeders if you want. As far as I can tell, this is the only way of getting shotguns and bolt guns in the same army where the models have the same rules and stats, but the major downside is that they’re all astartes stats, which is really unfluffy. Plus, there’s no good way of including suppression teams as crusaders would now be totally different (weaker) models than the rest. I guess they could be Vanguard Vets with storm shields, but they still end up a bit overpowered.

Also, PROGRESS!

I’ve assembled four Chimeras and two old Artemis-pattern FW Hellhounds (water cannon, innit?) using the Chapterhouse wheeled conversion kits. This actually took ages and required a lot of grinding and filling as those kits are very old and don’t really fit properly. However, I now have six vehicles ready to roll.

I wanted to make the Chimeras similar to the old Mike Mcvey conversion, so there not gonna have turrets - just pintle-mounted heavy bolters. As such, I’ve attached the headlights to the pintle too, to serve as magnet points,

I've always preferred the look of wheeled transports for guard, but haven't built any myself... I'm bummed to hear the switch isn't easy, as I currently have a Chimera in parts awaiting assembly. I'll be watching to see how these come together!

If it’s any consolation, at least the chapterhouse kits aren’t available any more. I think there are other conversion kits out there that might be better!!

Thanks for the detailed reply! I think you are right about Krieg engineers, they fit best but being elites and lacking bolters is very frustrating. Hopefully Arbites come out soon as part as part of necromunda and/or kill team.

Love the chimeras and “water cannons”. Are you going to make any Centaur Assault Carriers for the engineers? I think they are oop but the rules look good and it’d be great to see you have a crack at them.

TBH, with a bunch of chimera-style vehicles AND a bunch of Rhino-style vehicles, I think I'll hold off on any other huge batches of transports until I know more. Yeah, Krieg seem to be the best bet at the moment for load of reasons - not only can you field pretty accurately-equipped squads, but Cult of Sacrifice (ignore casualties from Shooting in the Morale phase) is really fluffy. I'm planning on a 'Judge Yarrick' to mitigate somewhat the tendency to blow themselves up, though!

I think there's a few ways they could go which work better: a flexible Inquisition codex which gives you a bit more leeway in the equipment department would work - if Acolytes could take bolters and shotguns I'd probably settle for that, but even better if they can take carapace armour. They could then get in any of the standard transport vehicles without any issue, and then you truly do have an army of shotguns, bolters, suppression teams and rhinos!

Or yeah, Necromunda release the inevitable Enforcers plastic sprue. GW quickly write up a 40k data sheet and release a limited boxed set of, say, two squads and two transport vehicles (like they did with Talons of the Emperor) to cash in.

A good inquisition codex would be great. I’m hoping inquisitors can fill a hq slot in another imperial army and buff a unit near them with their quarry rule. With those rules, they would make great “psi-judges” to go with the Krieg engineers. The inquisition annoying has no particularly useful synergy with other imperial troops at the mo. Better acolytes as you described would be great though.

Completely understand your point about the centaurs, I know you have a lot of tanks already! Storing them must be a nightmare!

Looking forward to seeing what comes next. Without wanting to derail your P&M blog, it’d be great to see the Arbites in a battle report again. Yours are always top quality
