I just got to eye the Hellbrute in person last night, along with the rest of the Chaos stuff in that set, and man was I impressed. Talk about cool minis. Nice work on it so far, theres so much gak on that compared to a typical SM model, how are you handling the change from flat and smooth to holy friggin frack stuff everywhere!!

the paintjob as is is looking totally cool... love the shades of the skin... also the hazard stripes look really regular...very steady hands you have mister...

one thing tho... seeing as this model is built from big parts... i see lots of gaps... in rather obvious places... seems to me these needed filling earler on...

Cheers guys, I'm enjoying painting him quite a lot, but not enough to switch to the dark side! :-) the washing idea is working out well, i'm hoping to finish the flesh today and get a bit more done on the armour, and yes, it is a big difference in painting style when you go from SM's to oodles of bits everywhere, but the approach i'm taking is to look at him in 3 parts, flesh/armour/extra's doesn't make it so daunting then :-)
and I know there's a few large gaps but the model is just for gaming and is a gift for a friend of mine so it's not overly important to fill them this time around :-) plus i don't have any liquid gs! lol

more this arvo everyone...

I like the way you did the flesh Nerdfest, looks really good at this point.

Im not sure what you should do about the head. But the head is kinda a centerpiece off the model, might be cool to do something about it, then just the same colour as the flesh, something to make it popp ^^

Keep on happy painting!

if you still consider filling the gaps tho i would suggest PVA... i literally wouldn´t know what to do with myself if i wouldn´t have any PVA at home

and i see your point mate^^

Gentlemen, start your brushes! update time on the work in progress of the Hellbrute, or his new name as my mate has named him when he visited today.... Hellscrote! apparently he resembles a giant veined scrotum! ..... sad thing is.... I can see it now! Doh!

anyway, that aside, I hope you still think he's looking good and coming along nicely? should be done tomorrow hopefully i re washed the flesh with purple ink and touched up the veins then worked on the hazard stripes and metal areas, I made some bits in the joins and around the spine a darker red fading into the skin tones, I like the difference it makes

What else have I been nerding today you may ask? well, my shrine of the Aquila I have been giving some attention, I wanted to give the giant eagle the marble treatment and set about washing and painting it up! since the shots i've glossed it and it looks even better but you have to wait for those pics later!

does it look enough like marble to pass?

Well, at least it isn't an EC HS.

Sort of looks like marble. But, in a good way aged and such to show that it's a ruin. Wouldn't expect pristine marble on a mostly destroyed building.

Holy gak mate! Youve got to explain how you did the marbling. That looks like a slab of kitchen counter I nearly bought once

Oh thanks guys! i'm happy you think it worked, I probably would make some of the veins longer in hindsight but when you work close up on the panel it looks different from a distance to paint it I can give you a quick rundown if you like? i used the MassiveVooDoo method on their website as a rough guide:

Based Dheneb stone, then made light waves with Gryphone sepia watered down, then while it was still damp I followed the same rough lines with slightly darker gryphone sepia then did finer veins with snakebite leather and finally very fine ones with snakebite and black mix, once dried i washed the whole thing with gryphone sepia to knock it back and tie it together

@Vik: what do you mean light issue

Since I took the pics i've painted ardcoat over the marble and it looks good, I need to give it another coat to really gloss it up but pics will happen once i do more work on the windows

Hellscrote's face? how about the face painted up like a 'normal' marine fading into the swollen purples? i'm afraid i'm going to lose it's focus with the rest of the model!

i think the recent pics are sadly not really done with good lightning... way too dark and thus a bit too grainy...as i think that cool looking art of yours needs better light to be admired for real!

I agree with Vic NF09. You got really good blending on your models and its a shame we cannot enjoy them in proper lighting! The Hellbrute came out awsome and love the hazard strips and on your SoA the marble is really realistic looking. Bit like Vic said we must see the light!
Keep up the awsome work cannot wait to see more!

Ah, i see said the blind man I'm taking pics with my phone using snapbucket as it drops them straight into my photobucket account and my phone is actually better than my camera I'll try and get them a bit brighter for you next time guys but i'm afraid they'll be too close/bright/washed out?

It may be a week until I get a chance to do any work to show you I'll attempt to finish Hellscrote and my speeders when i can, I also got my How to make wargames terrain book in the post today! it's actually pretty good I'm happy with the purchase and it'll help me with a few (hundred) projects!

well...happy reading then

and always "try" to do daylight pics... the colors thus and ther general lighting issue will be solved... the camera "opeing" times are way shorter this way so you get sharper pics and all...and if you have a timer function with the phone cam... then try to use that as a trail...

Did heaps of work today! ....... shame it was in the garden and yard!

Although i did get a chance to work on a couple of little things

got my statue in the mail today for my fountain fun! it's the perfect size too! I washed it and primed black before giving it a coat of Tin Bitz.

Next thing i did was work on my waste station for my cities of death manufactorum model, I wanted to try and make it look like fluid was spilling out and splashing slightly into the body of water causing slight rippling? I used a small piece of whipper snipper line heated and bent to act as the guide for the water, I'll coat it with water effects and paint so hopefully it blends in well! any advice on what colour the water should be? I was thinking a algae green colour? but I would really love to make it look like there was an oil slick on top of the water but I don't know how to achieve the effect?

thoughts? progress?

I was thinking either green or rusty brorange(brown orange......ya) As far as an oil slick, wait till its dry and then make/use washes to get the desired effect, heres a pic of some ON green water even

Hmmmm too bad dish soap doesnt dry that way. I think I might try a few things later and see what I come up with for ya

Mastering Non-Metallic Metal

Maybe try some layering or airbrushing over some masking.
And take note that the oil slick will only form on the surface of relatively calm water, so there will be an area around where that leak is churning the water where you won't see the oil.
And the colours are due to refraction and so the angle of the water surface will affect the colour to a certain extent, meaning the bands of colour may seem to follow the shape of the larger ripples.

looks like some research is in order then! :-) I do love a good challenge! .... heck i love a bad challenge....... strangely it was always the bad challenges that got me into trouble! like trying to ride an upright piano down a VERY steep street! and getting caught by the homeowner! yeah... what kingcracker said... probably a mix of washes will get you a nice oily effect...

the statue looks nice... tho with the round pedestal of the fountain you need to make these align...

and i like those big pipes... looking very dramtic! tho i have to say with these... the trickle should be a bit thicker then...

oh, and i like the sloshes and strockes you already did with that air dry clay... nice idea that you can consider nicked

just my five cents tho

There's probably a tutorial somewhere for the same effect on metal, it should more or less apply to water.
