Thank you chaps! I didn't intend on finishing him in that sitting but I kind of got in the flow of it! I do enjoy painting colours I feel confident in doing like that yellow/green armour :-) so it didn't take me too long.
I primed him with Angel green from The Army Painter then used warpstone Glow as my base coat, then it was 60/40 Warpstone Glow & Daemonic yellow followed by 60/40 Yellow & Green then as the yellow is quite translucent I used it to glaze over what i had already done in multiple passes to bring that bright green yellow look to the fore! seems to work! :-)
hopefully I'll do his head this week and have him all done! pale skin and black hair is the fluff right?
I also have been tinkering in the spare 20mins before work tonight, I found a Sang Guard death mask head and was thinking about my Dante conversion, how does this sound? due to the fluff saying they have reportedly been undone by the flaw in their geneseed and it cannot be certain if they are still loyal or not, I thought a creepy gold deathmask with the mouth covered and smoothed in to represent their chapter master stating they are not the flesh eating barbarians other fear? and they are still loyal? or i've cut a skull in half and joined it to the yelling bottom half of another head so it's weird and creepy skull eyes and nose, yelling flesh mouth below in gold once filled and smoothed it shouyld look o.k too? what do you guys think? or should i just wait and get Korvydaes bare head :-)

I'll try and get a wip shot tomorrow night for you Gits, it sort of looks good and sort of looks not quite right :-) but I haven't added any Greenstuff yet it's just 2 bits chopped and glued but you'll be able to at least see what I was trying to achieve!
and I'm pleased you like your Mantis Captain! he was really a cool model and one i've wanted to paint for a long time, I personally don't like having metal mini's so I refrained from purchasing him myself but having the oportunity to give him Mantis life was an honor I thank you for!

Yup there are two, but the a corner of the two was taped so i didnt want to just pull it off, and i was excited to photo it for you Yes definitely doing your comp next year, nothing like a painting comp to put you on your best behavior. I was even thinking of hosting one, though not even sure how many would want to join it, i dont have the pull that you do But my idea was to call it the gaurdsman painting challenge. And the only rule is that everyone must paint the same miniature. The basic snap together guardsman that you can buy for 10$ for 5, and see what everyone comes up with with just a basic guardsman. The only modelling would be allowed for the base. I think it could be a really cool comp, but dont know how to go about it. Any thoughts?
PS...it was crazy sunny, the cold arctic kind, glaring right into my eyes lol

It actually might be easier to do a normal cadian vs the snap together (or a choice). No flgs I've ever been to has had the snap together ones.
Or, if you bought a few packs and sold them for $3-4 a piece (cover model and shipping) it might work? Maybe less so for our Aussie friends, but there are enough they could split a pack as well.

Yeah i was kinda thinking the same thing whale, but reason i thought of the snap together is because its the exact same model, and kind of represents the most basic of sculpts you can get from gw. Its not a bad idea to ship em out either...They arent too rare though...hmmm, you bring up a good point whale..

The snap together SM are more common, they came with black reach and the painting sets, and are still available, though are 3 for $10.
Regardless, they do have 3 different poses in the box, so not exactly the same. Does eliminate the modeling part, but really so would Eldar Dark Reapers, or Fire Dragons, or Dark Eldar Incubi, or Space Marine Tyranic War Vets, etc.

Yeah, i agree whale. My thought was also the SM snap together because they are cheap as well and basic, but after mulling it over i feel the guardsman are bit less ubiquitous. The other models are expensive to purchase and i definitely dont want people to shell out 30+ bucks just to enter. The cadians have virtually no detail bits yet still require some challenges; skin, faces, cloth. Things that might challenge a painter to approach the model differently(?) Dunno but your thoughts are definitely taken to heart as i want the comp (if even i did it) to be enjoyable and easily entered..
EDIT: If availability is the only issue, what about giving a couple weeks or a month notice to allow time to purchase the mini before starting the official comp? just a thought...

A quick ebay search turned up none of those IG, and only a handful of the AoBR marines. I'd say for sure give a longer than normal comp time (like 6 weeks maybe?) in order to give time for folks time to procure said minis.
Interesting idea for a pure painting comp, not sure what kind of responce it will get though. In the comps I've helped with and been in, there are two distinct groups that concentrate either on the modeling or the painting. You are actively excluding one of those.
If you look at NF's comp, I doubt that you would have dkellyj, Cameirhi, tomcar31, or mad_eddy enter, and J-paint and Melacuvak would likely not have scored as high as you or some of the others that used more "stock" models. Not saying its a bad idea, just one that will draw different folks.

Hmmmm interesting train of thought going on here! while it's great fun hosting a comp it is tricky determining a theme that won't exclude too many and is yet still easily accessable to the masses, I like the idea of having a certain mini we all paint so it can be compared side by side for judging, but sometimes just having a certain theme we adhere to is better to enlarge the scope of those with low, moderate, and high skill sets and it also has the added benefit of getting those to think outside the box with their entry? Dang I see your points...Though in my mind i imagined that it wouldnt turn people away :(, but rather inspire a different approach to a project. (?) Also, and now that i think of it, judging it would be a bit more hardcore since there is less criteria to judge. Not a terribly bad thing, but it would make the comp a bit more edgy i guess. I got the idea from reading about a comp that challenged painters to take any mini but paint it is as though it was a sculpted gem. Pretty cool right?
Also, in my mind i just saw everyone painting their balls off and having tons of awesome models of exactly the same mold to compare each other to...an awesome site to behold to any lover of miniatures!
I would hope that it wouldnt turn people away but instead inspire them.
Getting the model presents a whole new issue though...gotta look into that more..

I for one would enter, I did not enter Damo's competition with any illusions of ability, but to see if I could push myself a bit further. I can't help myself with the modelling, I convert just about everything in some way, so that would be my biggest challenge. I would not expect to get aywhere in such a competition, but would try my best and see how far I can push it, get a bench mark on how good/bad I am. I hope to get better, and the best way is to meet these kind of challenges. I am at the moment painting plain guardsman, admittedly converted and not 100% standard, but just guardsman, to improve my painting skills. Feedback is the key for me. I enter hoping that someone will say, "Wel mate, not bad but ...." Then I know what to work on.
Just my point of view.....
Great work BTW Damo, looking forward to more Ork's from you.

I've always thought it would be cool to see a contest of greyscale or sin city style minis (greyscale with one bold color, usually red). The gem idea is cool too. I think a pure painting competition is more likely to put people in the "well, I'm clearly not as good a painter as bebop, I might as well not even try." mindset. It also doesnt let people add to their own army as easily, so might detract from the draw there as well. I think the idea of using the same model would work wonders for a flgs event better than the internets tbh.
On a slightly related note, another way to get some of the non-elite painters involved would be prizes outside of 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Put all the non winners in a drawing for a "participation" award. Let the participants vote for a "painters favorite", and exclude the top 3 folks, etc. Lets us poor fools feel included.
@ Cam: Comps are very good for that. Judges are expected to be a bit more dickish in judging than you would normally get from a p&m blog (which is usually more about praising your good points).

I gotta get in on this conversation.
I think it's a great idea bebop. The more standardized the figure, the better. An old AOBR or other box set marine would work. Something that has no personality of its own. No conversions allowed, plain black base... just you and your paint brush. Give people a couple of weeks to get their models... people on daka are generous. i'm sure there would be marines getting sent all over the place by dakkanaughts with extras.
Do it! It's a moral imperative.

Heres an idea; and id like to say off the bat, i want to stray away from marines. They are everyones first miniature and more often than not, people paint them all the time. Its not a bad idea for a comp at all. but marines are everywhere. I chose the cadian because it gives the painter alot of options in technique and color schemes. It has the hard surfaces of armor like the marines, but also cloth (Camo ideas), metals, a gun that can be painted a little more dynamically ...i think theres just more room for interpetation...AND chances are, people paint them less. ANNND, they are us!!!
so with that said....
how about this:
1 Cadian Soldier built from the sprue. Must be a basic trooper, not a seargant, no special weapons, must be a lasgun. and must be on a 28mm round base. No extra wargear. No conversions.
prizes supplied by me, and a 4th place most improved or some such kind of contestant voted on, fan favorite. etc etc..
what do you think?

I like it. Totally understandable on the marine, just seemed the easiest cuz everyone has a pile of those things laying around. Maybe allow for those goofy beveled bases too, I know some folks prefer them, and it wouldn't give an advantage.

Skalk's idea is pretty good. Although, standard guardsmen with lasgun and no special weapons or conversions, limits contestants significantly.
If time is available, I would love to get in on this sort of thing as well. Great idea. I like the simplicity of everyone working on the same canvas, so to speak.
I'd be interested to see all the different techniques that one basic build could take on. Not to mention, the huge arrangement of color palettes that extend past the usual military drab (army green & khaki).

I'd be all over this comp like a bad rash.
I really like the idea of everyone painting the same mini. Whether it's a standardised, "everyone make a guardsman to these specification" mini, or a "just knock out a guardsman with a lasgun", it wouldn't really matter. It's nice to get multiple peoples perspectives of the same subject matter. It may even force a few people to tackle things they're not used to doing. Such as skin. An Eldar, Necron or Marine player can quite easily get away with never showing any skin, where as a guardsmen is all skin.
I would also be hugely up for a greyscale comp like what Whale suggested. Someone best get on that...
