Thought I remembered it but I couldn't find it lol. I will have to skim through at some point.

It probably should get a sticky in the tutorial forum

I am so happy with what I've been mucking around with this week! I painted up 9 bare heads and started on a backdrop for my mini's to just experiment and see how the terrain stuff i got works and looks

so, firstly, what do you usually do when you get a remote control car? throw away the packaging right! not if you're a Nerd you don't a guy from security bought one and had it at work in the box and was going to throw the packaging out but i rescued it seeing potential straight away!
here's the plastic insert the car came on in the box:

I then grabbed some scissors and cut the two long edges off to make a shallow rocky mountain ridge like this:

I then cut some plywood to form a low backdrop which can be painted to resemble a horizon and anything i want to convey the skies of Evandalus Prime and then I used some pre mixed polyfilla or spackle to glue them on, it's still drying so i'm not sure how it'll actually hold them onto the board? I'm going to use more filler to create explosion craters where the models wheels used to sit:

And I tried my hand at making some cheap broken concrete, worked o.k I thin too, it's just plaster mixed with some black paint so when it breaks you don't get the white telltale showing!

Now, onto the head painting! I really tried hard to get work in progress shots but I couldn't get really good pictures so i'll just write as much or as clearly as i can to go with the couple of shots i did manage
firstly I undercoated them black and painted a slightly thinned coat of Tallarn Flesh on them all:

then i washed them quite heavily with Ogryn Flesh wash, this toned the skin and shaded the recesses so I can see where to highlight them next:

Next step was to create the first highlight we work with, it's roughly equally mix of shadow grey, dwarf flesh, bleached bone.

then I did the first highlight, don't worry if it appears quite rough, subsiquent highlights will fix it nicely and in the end we should have quite nice tabletop ready heads!

Next add some more bleached bone to the mix and water it a touch more so it blends better.

Next I added some more bleached bone, it's a really subtle method and as these pics show you shouldn't be able to see a really sharp change in colour, Once i'd done with the highlighting i added some black to the flesh mix and painted his shaved head and a little stubble.

I also added a small amount of Mechrite red to the same flesh mix and watered it down and painted the bottom lips on them all and the bared teeth on those that had them on show:
then lastly I just painted another wash of Ogryn Flesh over the skin on the face and did the neck seals metal and any bionics.

finally, here is how they all look when finished, i'd love to see which ones you all like and what you think of them? I have a good collection of different ones now!

Now, what troops should each one go on? who'd look best in Termie armour/assault marine/tac troops?

hope you liked todays update i enjoyed it immensely

until next week, and i'm working on something I haven't done before....

Yeah I really need to re do that head tute don't I :-) I just can't figure out how to get decent pics with the camera i'm using that show the mix of paint as well.

I could indeed use the hand in a display board Whaley I hadn't thought of that idea, it has a small stand I was just going to put it back on as a display to keep me motivated but would work as a backdrop for my guys.......

KC i'm using a engraving tool to etch into it the dremel I have is a bit wobbly and cumbersome so i bought a little pen style engraver and it's working well, I just do a few lines every now and then when I go past the Nerd cave :-)

IF looking stunning, thanks for sharing your yellow technique, looks so good, and easy when you do it!

Like to add, you have made the fact that they are Yellow work, what I mean is, I have a thing about the silly Space Marines and their silly mega bright colours standing out like a sore thumb in any environment, (pauses for trolling of how they are so brave they like being stupidly brightly coloured!) HOWEVER, your brilliant yellow looks actually passable in real world, could see that working, not silly garish yellow, instead they are mellow yellow peril. Brilliant work yet again.

Damn, that yellow is very sexy. Great job on the fists, I've got the 'yellow blues' right now personally. I look at my Fists on my table and go 'le sigh' then look at another plog on dakka

Is there any chance you could do a step by step for the Fists or a few quick little wip's?

I got the models and bits for the creation of my Command squad for the IF's 3 Combi plasma guns, an Apothecary and a company champion! I really like the way they look and will be a cool unit when paired with Lysander or Kantor

So lets run through them shall we

Group shot

So the first guy is the Champion, he uses Pollux' head on Garros body with Sigismund's shield arm and a terminator shield, I do need advice with an issue I had with him though my superglue had a little bubble or something and when I went to use it it ran all over his chest which obscured some of the details and I don't know if it can be fixed or if I should just try and paint fix it?

next up is my favorite Vet, using the games day praetor as a base a 30k SoH bare head and sigismund's left hand I think

number 3 is combi plasma vet, uses a Palantine Blade body and a IF helmet upgrade with a mix of pads.

number 4 is a giant of an Astartes, an exceptional soldier with a humane streak and a sworn oath to mend his brothers under any circumstance, his bulk and single mindedness has seen him advance to where he is today at an exceptional rate. I still need someparts for him to finish him but I thought I couldn't leave him out.

lucky last Combi Vet uses Palantine Blades body again with IF helmet and cool sneaky pose!

There we go guys hope they're o.k!

whalemusic360 wrote:What's with the not bases?[/quote

Hey Whaley, so far all the IF's are rescue models and I've cobbled together heaps of different bases to use them with that's all

EGGY! yes mate, 230 pages I know right! it's a lot thanks for the props on the IF's they will certainly end up as a big army but still nowhere near your level of collection

Thanks Cam, the yellow is inspired again from the Space Marine novel where they describe it as Mustard or Pus yellow, it's still bright but a bit deeper.

Cool compositions there! If the Champ's chest is an issue, and these are 40k rather than 30k marines, I'd just whack a purity seal or two over the offending area. I can't think of anything that would remove the glue without destroying the resin as well.

Nice minis! The finished yellow is great. Beautiful job on him. Yea id agree with Para, you could probably cover up the offending areas with SM bricabrak, it might err on this side of overly busy though, but maybe not too....you could also try and paint it as some kind of battle damage? Maybe some like bright green plasma melting...could be a nice chance for a spot color...but i think ultimately the fastest way to fix is to cover it up;

I'd probably have at it with a knife and make it battle damage.

Or paint his face pale and pasty and then paint the glue area as vomit.

One of those two options is not serious.

I actually tried nail polish remover very carefully then washed the model and it's not perfect but better than before so I'm happy to have a go with it. I was going to paint the chest eagles red like the troops but I might go with black/silver to camouflage any imperfections. I've done a little more on the Sallies dreadnoughts but haven't time to upload yet i'm struggling whether I need to keep layering to get more depth to the colour or if it will be fine once the other colours and details get added and I can shade some more ink in the recesses?

I have a fine cast Libby that has really bad flash on his face..theres nothing I can do. it's also one reason I haven't worked on my grey knights, don't get discouraged like me lol

Not where I should be

Bit extreme maybe, but could try soaking in Dettol for couple days. I have left models soaking for days and it it has broken down super glue and green stuff. Careful work with a sharp pair of tweezers and pop. It is what I would try.

Thanks for the advice and help guys with the glue issue! it's not that bad now so once I get the rest of the bits for the Apothecary i'll hit them up with some primer and see how they look

but for now I have a finished model to show you all, one of Whaley's Sallies, the contemptor dreadnought, I was a little unsure about whether i'd done enough green and gold washing to get the depth I wanted so the only way to see was to actually continue and finish a model to see how it looks all together I'm happy with the way he looks, I think it's a good point to get them done in a timely manner while maintaining a decent tabletop standard of paint that still should turn a head or two ( Whaley to confirm )

So do you think this level across the entire army would look good? any little touches I can/should do?

Boy Damo, your technique really looks phenomenal with the gold on the green. Really love it. I'd caution a light touch with the gold rather than too heavy. You don't want to lose the green in all that gold.

Kinda an accident when laying some lighter colour down to shade it but it reminded me of another way i'd seen the hammer done so I went for it

Thanks dude, if you want me to do some throughout then sure! I mean they're yours after all I should have added a few lighter accents to the scales as the darker parts blend in too much, still looks good though.

Thanks Gits, it's a funny technique where you think you're going ott but it ends up o.k I find pure gold on the edges gives the impression without covering to much!
