i have an OC pony, currently dabbling a little in RP on the EQD pony chats, the community is realy fun there and i have been doing little more than lurking for the past few weeks but its still alot of fun

Production Shut-Down
You may have heard that we are shutting down production. For clarification, this refers to canceling plans to invest more time and money into releasing a disc with additional material and segments that have already been shot but didn't make it into the film. We have many great stories that just didn't fit into the flow of what we were creating with the film but thought the Brony community would really enjoy seeing. Because the piracy within the Brony community is rampant and pervasive we've come to the conclusion that investing any more time and energy would be not be worthwhile.

Unlike those of you who actually contributed to the creation of the film, there are those who feel the tremendous support we received was simply a financial bonanza and don't understand that we used the money to create the best possible film. They clearly don't understand, appreciate or respect the work and feel that since in their view, you the supporters paid for it, they are entitled to get it for free.

Lesson learned, we are moving on and focusing on distribution to the mainstream public.

Nope, doesn't sound bitter at all.

A release to the KS backers from the BronyDoc team, they were using all the funding generated by the brony masses to continue to add content, then release a DVD with a bunch of extra features targeted towards The Public At Large. Piracy however has been rampant enough that it's shut down the team just on lack of funding. Pretty sad to see in general especially with bronies posting stuff like this (from FB)

So the Bronies Documentary has been finally neutralized

Production of the extra stuff has been pretty much halted, although im not sure what will be of the extended Faust interview, but anyway

Really, it deserved it, the film shouldn't even be called a documentary since all it did was follow around a few people and said the community was SO AWESOME over watching FiM and other crap, not a single bit of history on the origins of the people THEY WERE FOLLOWING AROUND

Also I resent the blame on pirates due to the simple fact that people who weren't going to buy this anyway are the people who pirated and a vast majority of people who WERE going to buy this backed the project in the first place, I don't know how they expected major profits out of a film designed to just stroke Bronyism's ego

This is a clear example of a film failing due to how stupid and how mismanaged it was in its production and release

I also applaud /mlp/'s efforts to distribute this film

Besides having this individual being a smug git with his head up his arse, who has a significant issue with what the word "documentary means"

Yeah I'm just disappointed. That's all.

I had an idea for an Pathfinder campaign. Th players get transported to equestria by an evil cleric, But they have to make it out. They would fight dragons, manticores and basilisks.

They got Kickstarted for over several hundred thousand dollars to make the documentary, and were then charging $13 to download the doc once it came out. The general response is where the hell did they sink all that money?

It sounds very much like they got overwhelmed, similarly like some bronies .... too bad they (at least temporarily) lost some professionality in the process ....
Well, bronies do tend to see more to the effort than to result .... but also isn't as forgiving towards things one has to actually buy ...

The interesting thing, is that some things that a bigger production takes more money to do, could just as well have been done by a smaller pruduction, for less money.
The piracy hadn't been rampant if they just had released it on youtube ....
Did they really expect income from that documentary?

First they banned Derpy from the show, then they made Friendship Is Witchcraft take all their videos down from YouTube, and now they've made Fighting Is Magic cancel their game after its been in development this long. Heck, I'm hearing when Faust left the show, it was very reluctantly after being almost forced out.

Though to be fair, children were the original target audience for MLP and Bronies just happened to also like it. Also on the copyright/trademark front, there's really no way you can say Fighting is Magic isn't 100% derivative of MLP. Don't know about Friendship is Witchcraft. With that said, parody is protected speech, so legally Hasboro might be in the wrong, but really, what pasty internet nerd is going to take the risk, both in terms of time and finances, to take friggin' Hasboro to court?

I still don't like it, mind you.

I'm mostly just hoping the Mane6 (a term Bronies coined, so Hasbro has no claim to!) continue doing fighting game development. Heck, re-skins and a different name, and they'd still be able to use Fighting is Magic (though they'd have to re-do most of the animations unfortunately). and it was really shaping up to be a pretty awesome game.

Also, as long as they don't sell it for profit, HB has no leverage and no legal claim (I think). It's just that C&D letters tend to be kinda scary. Thing is, what's Hasbro going to sue for? Lost revenue due to copyright infringement? So, Mane6 must pay Hasbro a total of.... $0.00? If they represent themselves, they'd not have to pay any fees- the most expensive thing would be getting to court dates and long-distance phone calls.

The issue with representing themselves is most people don't really have any knowledge whatsoever of legal matters, or at least, not sufficient knowledge to adequately represent themselves in court.

There's a saying that goes something along the lines of "He who represents himself in a court of law has a fool for a client".

See though, in this case, it's a fairly simple matter. (I use the term 'simply' very carefully). Either they're protected under Fair Use/Parody, or they aren't. Find the relevant laws (they're publicly available), translate them from Legalese... Double check the clauses concerning For-Profit use of Trademarks and Copyrights...

These guys didn't know anything about making a fighting game, and barely even anything about playing them when they started. They'd probably be able and willing to put the time into learning the relevant case law.

Eh, I never cared about fighting is magic and I don't know if they did what you said with Witchcraft, because it's still there.

But HOW DARE THEY TAKE AWAY MY DERPY!!!!

And why did season 3 have to be so short? I'm only now hearing that season 4 is coming and will have 26 episodes, but sheesh, my weekly dose of ponies cut short so soon? How long will I have to wait before I can refill my prescription?

The half season three is a so dictation thing as the 70something episodes is the amount you make before that. Left them free to dump the show if it wasn't doing well, but it is,'so they're making more seasons now.
