This thread seems to have gone downhill. This is less about anime and more about ecchi anime now. Started Fairy Tale again after dropping it a while back. I only got a few episodes in but its still good.!

Ecchi is fine, if done tastefully. It really annoys me in certain cases, like Dakara wa mumble mumble. There has to be a good reason to use it, and a good plot to support the mood switches that accompany it.

I'm a bit late to the party, but Evangelion is nice. It reminds me of my childhood so much, even though it was before my time. They used to put a lot of effort into things back in 1995, since they didn't have modern CGI to fall back on when they needed better animation. The intro is pretty advanced with all that transparency and synchronization.

Personally, if I had to choose an anime from that time and age, I'd choose the Vision of Escaflowne over Evangelion. True, the latter has more attention, acclaim, and controversy, but Escaflowne has a touching story with very human and such well-developed characters.

Added it to my list! If you have any more suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. There's a lot of things that are totally overlooked from that time period, and the only way to get a feel for them is to ask people who are old enough to remember.

Lol, I'm not that old, I'm only 20...I just like collecting and watching good anime DVDs

Let's start with mecha....I really recommend you find the 1981-1982 compilation movies of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), the grand-daddy of all mecha anime (if you want super robot, ask someone else, not a big fan of those, sorry ). Compared to the TV series, it has faster-paced action and cleaner graphics (relative to the time period). I suppose you could watch Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985) if you can find it, but I would recommend getting the 2005 compilation movies instead - improved graphics, cleaned-up story, faster-paced action. Then there's Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1983) and its Americanized version, Robotech. Both are good, but have different stories. The Robotech sagas are all on youtube, but for Macross I recommend you watch I Remember Love, its 1985 compilation movie with a cleaned-up story. Escaflowne, I really recommend, and of course Macross 7, if you don't mind watching recycled action scenes for good Japanese rock music. Turn A Gundam is however, the best mecha anime of the '90s IMO. The action scenes aren't that good, but the story and characters are so good they actually made me cry. As for the 21st Century, if you want to watch the Cosmic Era Gundam series, I suggest you only watch Gundam Seed. Gundam Seed Destiny has ripped-off mobile suit designs from older Gundam series, poor characters, and even more terrible story. Feel free to choose between Code Geass, and Gundam 00, though I prefer the latter. And there's Macross Frontier, the best mecha anime of the first decade of the 21st Century IMO - great graphics, good story, and good characters.

For non-mecha, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Second Gig are both good, but with heavy political undertones (though I must admit, it very much influenced my views on cybernetics). Ah! My Goddess is a good choice for a romantic comedy (better than any other IMO), and Haibane Renmei if you're up for a sentimental, introspective anime.

I must admit that one of the reasons I liked (well perhaps liked is the wrong word) NGE so much is that the characters really struck a chord with me, especially Shinji. He really reminds me of myself. Like me, he's incredibly quick to put himself down and never gives himself any credit, like me he is scared of being around other people for fear of ridicule, like me he has a bastard of a father (although mine is possibly even worse), we both have incredibly low self esteem, we are both always apologizing...but then as a depressed teenager I suppose I am the target audience. The ending I will admit is very confusing, though while I hate to sound like a member of the "2deep4u" crowd, you do need to really think about the ending for it to make sense. It is also forgiveable considering the team was completely out of money by then. I can understand why people might not like it, but myself I thought it was excellent. The other thing is that it is so massively overhyped that no matter how good it is, it cannot possibly live up to the hype, and the people who made it, Hideaki Anno included, would be the first to admit that.

Also, I have been tempted by One Piece. It looks quite funny (from what I can see, it is essentially a gloriously silly pirate spoof series, with the characters constantly searching for somewhere called Fishman Island, presumably in search of treasure). Luffy looks positively insane though.

The pirates in One Piece are searching for One Piece, the worlds greatest treasure left behind by the former Pirate King. Whoever finds it gets to be the new Pirate King, which is the main character's, Luffy, goal. Fishman Island is just one stop along the way and the segment of the story the just wrapped up. Great series and I'd reccomend it.

Myself I just started up D Grey Man. Five episodes in and it seems alright so far.

Evangelion has too much mind screw for me to enjoy. No offense to its fans, but personally I'd place it in the same category as School Days (a deceptive name for such a nightmarish anime) and Elfenlied.

If you people want a great Slice of Life anime, I strongly recommend Great Teacher Onizuka, either the manga or the anime are good.

The manga is still ongoing. My theory is they're aiming for 1000.

As far as ecchi goes, I'd still like to see Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou as an anime. The manga is hilarious in places, even though it's a harem comedy in the vein of Asobi ni Iku Yo!.

I just watch all the Black Rock Shooter TV episodes in one go. Boy what a series.

It has mindscrew levels approaching Evangelion, and is really confusing. That said, you generally make sense of what happened a few minutes after it happens, although I'm not entirely sure myself. It was really heartwarming at the end, but EXTREMELY creepy all the way through. While not quite at NGE levels of disturbing...ness, it was pretty high up there.

Also, even though the reasoning isn't explained until late in the series (which is admittedly only 8 episodes long) the fight scenes in the Otherworld are nothing short of awesome.

I would recommend it, but it isn't for the faint of heart, so do expect quite a bit of psychological horror and tearjerkers.

I'd say it ties with 'Grave of the Fireflies' as the best Non-Miyazaki Ghibli film.

There's an interesting story about Grave of the Fireflies. The guy who made simultaneously got praised for his depiction of the horrors of war, and bashed for being too sympathetic too the WW2 era Japanese and too damning of the Americans, when it turned out his original intention was to point out the hardships his generation endured and how modern people are too quick to complain.

I think you got the explanation right. Black Rock Shooter makes no sense. BRS is an alter ego of mato and what happens in the real world affects the alter ego. The TV show is garbage btw. I'd say its one of the worst anime shows I've ever watched. Its pretty, but that's about it...

You see, I quite liked the TV show. But then I like the more abstract mind screwy series. The idea was really interesting, and while it is very confusing it makes more sense as the show goes along. I can understand why someone might not like it, but I wouldn't say it was really bad. There are much MUCH worse series than BRS (Gravion anyone?) and at least it wasn't a gakky fanservice wad.

Don't worry, I can't stand dubs (with the sole exception of Hetalia, which was superbly dubbed on account of the fact the voice actors sounded like they were interested). Is the series any good though?

It's pretty much the definitive archetypical harem anime. Good, fun, and I have absolutely no desire to watch it again. And, as ever, the manga was better.

Saying that, by the Japanese definition of anime, Oban is actually anime, as anime is just the Japanese word for cartoon. Pretty good show mind you.

Also, does Love Hina contain any...X-Rated content? If so I might give it a miss.

Nope no porn in love hina, at least not that I remember.

It is the archetypical slice of life romcom harem anime. I still prefer Tenchi, but I'm the kinda guy who needs some lasers and space pirates to go with his romcom.

Phew! Thank goodness for that. I love slice of life shows, so I will definately check it out.

Which admittedly makes no sense considering I love both NGE and Black Rock Shooter (which is kind of a slice of life show, albeit one with a horrible, CREEPY twist) which are both mind screwy psychological horrors. Yes, Red Comet, I know you hate them.

Speaking of lasers and SPAAAAAAAACE, I may check out Bodacious Space Pirates. The name on its own is awesome.
