Yeah I saw, thanks!

Working on my Dark Mechanicus zombies today, they're conversions from the wonderful mantic ghouls... I could call them Forge Thralls or Forge Ghouls perhaps.

It's a WIP... you can't see in the pic but I knocked off their lower jaw and replaced it with hosing. I just took a pic of their backs because I think that's the coolest part.

Probably won't be glowing eyes on these guys... they are meant to be less sentient, captured imperial citizens that have had their blood and other vital organs (or parts of organs) replaced to be more dead than alive. Kind of like turning them into servitors, except way more evil, it's like a living death where you are suffering all the time, know what is happening, have no free will and are utterly controlled by your master. So naturally their favorite thing is to go into battle where they can enjoy inflicting the same suffering they feel on others, or die and have their own suffering end.

Okay, I figured this time I would put up a more in depth step by step thing on how I'm doing the Forge Ghouls, because some people out there might want to do something similar, who knows? I mean who wouldn't with how good CSM zombies are and how cheap mantic ghouls are? Not to mention if any of you have any good tips/crit please share!

I'm I have to wait until I do the next batch to explain how I do the converting part (didn't take pics), this is just painting now.

Step 1: Prime

Step 2: Airbrush on a mix of .5 VMA mohagany and .5 VMA black, for the tattered robes. When I first started painting black I use blue/grey for color and depth, but now I've changed my mind and I use a dark red black... it looks a lot warmer, and it goes along with a dark mechanicus theme... a very dark, bloody reddish black (since AdMech are red).

Step 3: airbrush on some thinned out GW rotting flesh. Although any whitish-yellow-green would probably work. The idea here is that it's dead flesh, (or flesh with whitish blood-substitute flowing through it). It is slightly green to be complementary with the slight-red color in the robes, it's very subtle (not like red and green christmas colors) but it's a great color combo.

Step 4: Go over the robes with the red-black to re-do the areas that had a bit of overspill from the rotting flesh, and do any spots the airbrush missed.

Step 5: Go over the mechanical parts with GW Tin Bitz, or equivalent. It goes along with the reddish color and it's a good base for more metal paint that will go on later.

Step 6: Soft black wash over everything, the flesh is the most important.
Step 7: Heavily Drybrush (to cover the raised surfaces) Boltgun metal or Gun metal over the metal parts.
Step 8: Use a slightly lighter mixture of the flesh color and go back and highlight the raised upward facing parts.

That's what I've got so far, more later! I need to refine some details/shading and do the bases but these guys are coming along nicely...

on the thrd pic... that guy facing directly the camera... *shudders.... really creepy^^

good step by step... now everything falls into place... you use AB for mini painting.... go figure... now the glowy OSL effects make way more sense... making these with a brush i would have really doubted myself to ever get that done^^

and with these pics you really sold the mantic ghouls for that conversion idea... the poses are excellent fot that use... together with your sculpted scowls...

by the way... those bionic limbs... where are they from?

That's the beauty of it... those were bits that came with the kit! All I did was add a little wire coming out. The only parts added to these guys consist of copper wire, green stuff rolled into hosing and the green stuff hoods. Oh and I forgot the backs were chopped up pieces of little random techy bits mostly from wargames factory soldiers... they give so much extra guns and they have cool techy shapes.

I kept it simple so that if I'm feeling balsy enough I could make like 200 of them... I'm really loving how the hordes of underlings gives an army that feudal touch...

Thanks! It's not really that bad of a kit, the heads do get ridiculous though. I like all the extra bits that come with it. But I used one kit and made 5 spawn (including the one the lord is riding on). The one with a rider counts as a chaos lord riding a juggernaught with the black mace.

wow... these spawns made me step back a bit from my monitor... they look very alive and very threatening!!! you sir certainly have a knack for this kind of thing... dunno if that is good tho

and i had the slight suspicion that you "only" added the GS wires to the ghouls and some odd bitz... so... yeah do 200 minis of these... why stop? and i agree... many footsloggers always lend a feudal feel to the army... and show that life is far overrated^^

Yeah, now I just need some 'lordly' characters, and cut all the (non tru scale) power armour out of the army, and the effect should be complete.

So the Forges have been burning bright lately...

Here is my new guy. He needs a few more details, let me know what you think... I also want to write some unique fluff for this dark mechanicus force once everything comes together. He is huge! barely fits on a 40mm base. I use him as a counts-as Typhus in games. Some warpsmith counts-as will come later.

the forge ghouls are finished but I might go back and change them a bit to go with this guy, and give everybody tech-city ruins basing since I think it looks better.

And there's a sneak peak of my next project, a counts-as forgefiend/maulerfiend. Still waiting on getting the guns but the arms are magnetized. He will get quite some more details and changes but at the same time I want to keep things simple so I can make more and also sell them painted or unpainted once my designs have a bit more character. The idea is that little by little, I will cast my own bits and combine them with cheaper robogear bits and a few of the good GW bits and sell/share the final design. For people who want a different alternative daemon engine.

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

This is my favorite thread on Dakka Dakka hands down. Everything about all of your minis are dark gruesome and evil looking. I am really impressed by your dark talents. The only thing that i don't like about it is makes most other chaos armies look tame, including my own.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

Dude, thanks for the compliment It's a pretty serious one considering all the cool threads to pick from here... Also my style is pretty grimdark yes, but like I always say I love it about this hobby that there is no right way to do things... I appreciate cartoony/humorous/clean styles as well but I'm not the right guy to do it, but that makes it all the better for me to appreciate the different flavors.

The Dark Mechanicus guy is cool. I think maybe his chainsaw is a bit bright, but the head and robes are great. Can you show him with the ghouls scurrying around his feet?

The spider octopus is awesome, good combination of parts into a coherent looking beast. Something slightly bothers me about the join where the tentacles meet the red shoulder part, maybe either ditching those red bits, or cutting half an inch off the tentacles so they look like they are more attached. The head area looks fantastic, can't really make it all out but lots of cool details like the tiny buzzsaw.

 Bruticus wrote:

Yeah, I gave the chainsaw the red/yellow gradation because of the idea that it's one of those painting details that just looks good on the tabletop, and keep in mind it looks a bit brighter in the pic. But I had the same thought, it might look better with a dull molten red glow. When I go back and put final touches on this dude I might attempt that (maybe just using more reds over it).

For the robes I wanted some really matte finish, and the vallejo stuff wasn't doing it for me, so I went out and bought some matte medium that they use for acrylic paintings... it is very matte and great for fabric. A bit tricky to paint with normally though.

I will try to get some size comparison pics later once i get everyone based properly and I might re-work the ghouls. Also I want to do more spider servo skulls that might scurry about him/on him, except they will be spider daemon skulls (because it's dark mechanicus... they must be evil looking).

Your instincts are correct... that is a WIP area. It is a bit troublesome because that area is magnetized so I need to have the tentacles in a place that will also look natural if I replace them with autocannons at the same joint. So it will get a lot more attention around the area of the magnets and cableing to make it seem they are organically attached, however I don't want it to be too complex and I might still ditch the red parts like you suggested. (I mainly need something to make an elbow sort of structure).
