Just to poke my oar in here.
I'm a fan of both PC and console gaming but I feel they both have their strengths and weaknessess.
Consoles are great because they make gaming easy, you can pick up a game for your chosen console and you know it'll work (or at least should) and when you want to play a game you can just stick it in and off you go.
PCs are great in their versatility and power, they will always have the potential to do more than a console. However, you need to know more about how it all works to get the best from your PC and you don't know if the game you've just bought will work on your particular PC.
You don't nessassarily have to constantly upgrade your PC much to keep playing the latest games and sometimes an upgrade can be really cheap and allow you to play the latest games and make all your current games also much better than they were. Whereas when the latest console comes out you have to forget your current console and buy the new one which will be far more expensive than most upgrades you could buy for a PC.

I have had a PS2 for 12 years and used it solely to play movies on lol, and it still works without missing a beat! I figured with the new PS3 I got i should probably look into learning how to use the damn thing! I'll probably change up when the PS47 comes out! :-)

Indeed, I still have and still use a megadrive, a PS2 (which I only recently replaced a PS1 with), a Wii, an xbox and bits of my PC are at least 15-20 years old and I built a 2nd PC from the spare parts as I upgraded. You don't have to throw them away.

Yeah, I tend to use my consoles for platform and driving games and the PC for first-person type games.
And a cylon toaster or console would be cool.

We have a lot of different things going on here:
Moore's Law states that:
"The number of transistors that fit into an integrated circuit doubles every 18 months"
This is a technology we call miniaturization, it's why your smartphone has 100X the computing power than the Apollo missions to the Moon had 40+ years ago.
This means that hardware will always need upgraded to keep up with software, but software can only be developed for hardware that can run it, that is why your observation is correct about always having to upgrade PC hardware, but you are equating that with a quality perception somehow, that is where you are incorrect in your assumptions. Every single console game in existence was developed on a PC, which by necessity MUST be more powerful than the console hardware it is designed to run on (otherwise how would you compile that code into what we know as a game?). It isn't a valid argument that "console X is better than PC" because you cannot have one without the other. It can't be a matter of opinion, because it is empirical fact, and it can be measured by scientific means. I could go on and on, the curse of 16 years of doing this stuff professionally.
Now, from a consumer's perspective, there are a lot of other variables, empirically, all consoles and all PCs have exactly the same components, but some are faster.

I'll admit, I know little about the internals, but from a consumers point of view, it is both cheaper, and more desirable to have a console over a PC. Yes I own a PC, but only use it for Research, ordering online etc, the usual mundane crap. But also, I hate to have all my eggs in one basket. If I used my PC for games, and for whatever reason it breaks down, I'd be without numerous options. Whereas I keep the gaming element separate from the PC I have lessened the chance of that happening, which is why I also have a laptop and several Tb external hard drives (I process a lot of raw image data for photography).
In the end its preference from my point of view, much like Coffee or Tea... although in the latter I chose neither

And because it is Elitist, I don't play it...
online Elitist players suck the ever living fun out of online gaming. They, for the most part, are idiots.
Sorry, my opinion. Oh and I used to play online with games like Counterstrike and so on... then the life got sucked out of it through its ass. Now I couldn't careless for PC gaming. I'd rather play a game thats fully imersive from beginning to end without relying on other users than do Co-op with a bunch of no-brains.
and please this is not aimed at you personally Dave or the majority of other Americans on here that I know as a friend, but it seems the vast amount of online players that make PC co-op gaming unbearable are in face american elitist (game) snobs. It does my nut in.
