To hear that you had never seen the ocean legitimately astounded me. Now I just feel so lucky to like in a country where the beach is never too far away, wherever you are. The ocean is one of the most beautiful and terrifying things on this planet.

Hope you're having a good time!

As I live on a thin peninsula next to a castle on an island I find it hard to imagine growing up in the middle of a continent. Well done for going to see it - I might well feel the same if I went to inner Mongolia and stood on a hill.

I hear you have hasslefree miniatures. Snap.

Don't take this the wrong way Dave, but how can you get to your age in life and only just seen the ocean for the first time... I'm honestly gobbsmacked

LOL I don't think you understand the sheer area I grew up in:
UK 94,060 sq miles (243,600 km²)

Ohio 44,820 sq miles (116,100 km²)
Indiana 36,420 sq miles (94,320 km²)
Michigan 96,720 sq miles (250,500 km²)

The entirety of the UK could fit into Michigan alone.
I grew up in Ohio, one hour drive from the borders of Indiana and Michigan.

Lols yeah I get that

I'm just a bit of a wanderer, and I love to travel, so with how I think of things it just feels weirdly alien lols.

My parents and grandparents just weren't travelers- It's a farmer mentality I suppose. We spent time at the Great Lakes, but I've just never had an oppotunity to travel beyond the midwest much. I've only ever been as far west as Iowa

Honestly, I never thought seriously about traveling much. I was raised in the Rust Belt, where the economy was driven by the steel/automotive industry. It's designed to only pay enough to keep a modest home and not much else. But by the time I grew up, all that crap was mostly gone for me, no one could afford to travel much.

That kind of thing always makes me sad about America, and it reminds me of a book too (Generation-X: Douglas Coupland).

Yeah, the American Dream is basically bullshiit, I moved to the city because my Parent's generation didn't leave us much. Nowhere to work, nothing to do unless you want to breed children, and that's not my thing

I've been on a trip around the East Coast Vik, visiting Ladygeek's family for the holidays. Yesterday was the first time in my life I've ever seen the ocean.

dsteingass wrote:It was amazing, despite the crappy day. Growing up in the midwest, I thought I'd never ever see it. The scale, the size..it was the biggest thing I've ever seen. I have to admit, it took my breath away and was quite emotional for me. The sound was all I could hear, and the smell was probably the freshest thing I've ever smelled too.

it hasen´t been that long ago since i´ve had that moment happen to me too... seeing the ocean...well the eastern sea...which is not really open ocean by the way... was one of the single events that moved me a great amount... to really get this moment into persepective...birth of my two kids... and the first time sex.... i guess you see that seeing the ocean as a third moment in life that was breath taking shows its effect on me... for quite some time it has become a plan for my wife and me to move to the sea.... to maybe live on an island here in germany... it´s called rügen... quite nice and all... but the sound of the sea... well that is something that is the true definition of awesomeness... in the truest sense of the word...

and as for traveling... well lil ol me never saw any foreign country at all... which bothers me no end...

and... well a week of absence and still counting... and still no freaking updates dave... *shakes fists*
