Oh no, don't worry I'll crack out on the expansions again, but for wave 1 and 2 I'm definitely done!

Hmm, but aren't there other Imperial ships which are big to counter that rebel ship?

I haven't seen the actual missions, but I don't think the corvette actually fights. Isn't it basically a bit objective marker that you have to escort?

Although it would make for a great concurren 40K counts-as Star Wars match on the other table. Protect the ship on one table, and defend the base long enough to fire cannons into the blockade to allow it to escape.

I'm going to try and make it into an actual fighting model, though, still for escort missions dominantly. I see two viable ways to adjust it after some playtesting, either weakening it obviously, or adding some type of tyranid style swarm rule where every tie destroyed gets to come back on the board 1 or 2 turns later... otherwise yes absolutely, it can be an objective, escort or terrain simply enough!

Hey man, you work to such a high standard and a such a rate! Extraordinary. My favourite touches are the slave1 canopies and yr1300 exhaust ports. Btw, wife's just finished making this for my birthday:

Your wife is better than mine

I'm lucky she let's me mess around with this stuff, actual encouragement or participation are tough to come by, though she did play a game of x-wing to my shock and awe!

On to business -

Correllian Corvette! Tantive IV! Blockade Runner! Whatever the hell it is called lol -

Initial stages applying brass etch gribbled and various plasticard and plastirod extra touches to fill in some blanker areas and put some variation on similar parts -

Then after that, I had to add the 4 smaller turrets and extend the radar/scanner dish central pin, once that was done, it was basecoating time, a charcoal grey -

Then off to that, it was the occlusion shading pass in the recesses, a nearly black grey -

And then I forgot to take pics, but there was a first highlight in a US military grey, a slightly tan grey, quite light in the bone color range, and then I remembered again after I had finished the pure white highlight, carbon scoring and engine glow and exhaust soot. This is where it stands now -

So, that was actually pretty quick, 2-3 hours. Not bad!

Left to do:

Red/terracotta markings and detailing
chipping
Oil washes and filters
brushwork touch-up.

I am fishing around now, I have designed an acrylic template in the x-wing style for this monster measuring 16X7", including movement slots and room for .5' acrylic rods as stands. Once I figure out what rules I want for this bugger I will be able to make up the cards for it. I already have an initial idea which is in the x-wing proposed rules threads down in misc.games, but I need to test em out for real first.

After this, I thought I was done with my X-wing stuff til wave 3, but I have managed to get my hands on some SW miniature ship battles A-wing models, which are actually quite nice and more in scale to the rest of the ships imho, though some content that... so I will be duplicating my paint schems on the FFG a-wings on these smaller dudes, although without the airbrush work, just brush, should be pretty quick. THEN, I'm done til wave 3.

While your current paint job on the corvette is better than what I can do (though I think my ab skills are improving :-D), I was like (before I saw what you had left to do), "There is no fething way Tom is done with this model!"

Also as to the engines on that model, does it not burn the hot plasma-y blue/white that the other models do?

He he he, no, not done yet, all the fancy detailing comes next! This particular ship is depicted with yellow white engine glow in the films, rarely it has also been depicted with orange or reddish. SW ships have a great variety of engine glows, from the pure red of TIE engines, magenta/fluorescent orange of x-wings and y-wings, yellow white of the Corvette and Slave-1, Blue of Falcons and Start Destroyers and Lambda, red of nebulon B and super star destroyers... etc etc etc.

Tear drop and funny upright??? For a dude named nerdfest you are sorely lacking in original trilogy memorization! Stop what you are doing immediately and watch episode 4-6 until you pass out, with particular emphasis on episode 5! A test will be given in one weeks time!

Thanks, although the speed of the models is very much tied, at least with the ties and x-wings, to them being pre-painted... the rest are more or less page 1 re-writes. I appreciate your looking!

Can you explain what you did for the 'occlusion shading in recesses'? It's hard to tell what is painted on and what is cast by your light set up. Have you painted some shadows on? It looks very impressive.

Also, when airbrushing with masking tape, do you have tips on avoiding smudges where paint gets under the tape? If I had tried complex masking like that I don't think I would have got such straight edges.

Sunny SoCal

Occlusion is a 3d terms referring to 'self shadowing'. It is basically the darker shadows in the recesses, seams, and where two large surfaces meet at a greater than 75 degree angle. So basically I sprayed with my micron into all these areas creating a deceptively darker and natural looking shadow. It is a good trick, not super neccesary but it is a subtlety that adds to the illusion of scale.

With tape, most times you will find markings etc are put on surfaces suited to them, flat, not drastically rounded or relieved. This model had markings in a few spots that was a bit tougher to mask, lots of gribble, on in tight nooks etc. I just taped and silly putty, I did have a few small spots of leakage, but i will mask and cover it later with either the airbrush, damage or weathering. If I was absolutely desperate to make absolutely sure it was perfect, you could apply a thin seam of liquid mask with a brush to the edge of the tape to ensure you have a total seam. You have to make sure that you have a damn steady hand, but for non-competition use, it is a good trick to just filled in an area where a panel is raising the tape a mm or something on an otherwise flat surface.

Hope that helps!

This is a good question, Malika2 - but the Corvette Tom is painting isn't an FFG model, it's a third-party model that happens to be roughly the right scale.

I'm pretty confident in saying you're unlikely to ever see a FFG Star Destroyer, for example, but I don't know if we'll see a ship size larger than the Falcon/Slave I/Lambda shuttle in later waves.

Speaking of wave 3, Tom, what're you planning on picking up from it when it is released, and what are you thinking of doing in terms of repainting them?

Yes exactly Dysartes, the corvette is a Kenner collectors fleet toy from the late 90's that is about 88% of the right scale (16" instead of 18"). I am halving a custom x-wing style acrylic base cut for it in the x wing style, and have started figuring out some home brew rules for it, when those are tested I will design and print a proper ship card for it. But it is completely a DIY addition to the game.

For bigger diy imperial ships, I don't think there is anything small enough that exists in scale for the table. A star destroyer would be 22 feet, so that ain't happening lol.

For wave 3' I will repaint the bombers as I did all the other ties, just the grey areas and a new wash. For the lambda, probably an ab pass for highlights, some brush detailing and an oil wash, but I find it probably won't need much. Hwk am not too familiar with, but a paint upgrade and if more than one prob something based on alt card art. Bwings, paint upgrade as per all the other ships, and at east two alt schemes.

Basically they all get a minimum 80% repaint, up to 100%. All ships have at least 1. Custom scheme except for the advances, which are all just upgrades.

You might be able to do a DIY Lancer-class frigate, but it is about 40% longer than the CR90 you've got there - quick calculation would make it 25" or so long. Mind you, it was designed as a anti-starfighter ship, so would probably be a bit too lethal...

I got two starter boxes, another Tie Fighter and a Y-Wing, and just got two Tie Advanced in the mail. Will most likely pick up another X-Wing this weekend which should give us a nice little selection for games at work. I think the total would be:

3 X-Wings
1 Y-Wing

6 Tie Fighters
2 Tie Advanced
