I think it depends on what effect you want for your table. It's been discussed that Infinity haven't really nailed down their style yet. They seem to sway towards a lack of realism a lot of the time with no weathering and yet at other times they seem to be quite happy to weather away. Personally i haven't decided which way to go with table yet. I'm either going to weather it for a natural look or have it all bright and shiny like some of the beautiful artwork.

I have no problem with the difference is weathering style among Infinity terrain. I think the decision rests well with the players themselves whether to weather (HURHUR) their table and to which degree. I for one enjoy a bit of grime but I understand some people really want a slick and clean futurescape to battle over a la Appleseed.

Thanks a lot for the comments guys!
@Baiyan - if those front MAS buildings look unfinished, well... that's because they are! They actually belong to a mate of mine who has contributed a few of the buildings but hasn't painted them yet beyond an undercoat. So the table is probably at about 90% in terms of the stuff that is on show there, but still some way to go yet.
I've tried to contrast the styles a little bit in how I have represented the city. Basing it on 'Acontencimento', a relatively newly colonised world which is still undergoing much development. I usually have it set up with a kind of dirty/run down 'industrial' area, along with a cleaner 'residential' area (the MAS apartments, park with trees etc.) But, there is some cross over - the grafitti and half-torn posters on some of the apartments, showing that the financial development of this city might have just lost a little speed etc.
@malfred - having high ground, and also the ability to redploy quickly from a vantage point can give you a massive advantage if played right. Get someone effective at range ( HMG carrier or sniper for instance) and you can win the game with it, especially on a terrain set-up that isn't well balanced. That being said, when you are up high as well as being able to see everyone they can of course see you as well - all it takes is one lucky roll by your opponent, and your Lasiq sniper will do that thing from the Western movies, throwing their hands up in the air before jumping off the edge

Yeah. I also think there should be more official art and pictures of the architecture of the Infinity world. I find it a bit lacking to be honest.

It'll come eventually. Hopefully not too long away. They really need to start nailing down the setting to bring in all those customers that really care about that in particular.
Personally, my favourite look so far, apart from the version i have in my minds eye, is the look Warmill have got on their new crates. Those faded pastel colours and light weathering on futuristic but industrial terrain looks really, really awesome. Very inspiring stuff.

I think they do that on purpose to let terrain makers go wild. If you think about it the battles are taking place all over the place of several planets and even on ships. With the diversity of locations, cultures, and even races... there isn't really any "standard" I would think.
You would of course have key locations, so X city would like like this, but there isn't a generalization of setting because it's prob so varied. The descriptions of some locatiosn are already described decently well like Vaudeville and Pan ships.

Very good points. I do believe though that it would be helpful if slightly unrealistic if they had a strong blanket style to create a solid IP to market.
It'd even be possible to do it without encroaching on the idea of diverse locations if they think it through carefully. I certainly don't think it would do us any harm which is good and i think there are a tonne of bonuses to be had for them and us.

I'm all with you there and I think even if CB decides to give us more input on the architecture etc. it will still contain very different styles.
An ariadnan civil encampment, a military base on Paradiso and a pan oceanian metropolis couldn't look more different. So I agree, it's a players choice and a matter of reasoning.
If it's the Beverly Hills or Malibu of Acontecimento, it would be nonsensical to have weathering at all. (A hill with a serpentine road and loads of fancy mansions... that would be a cool board.)
My own board for example is supposed to (one day) be the inside of a recently deserted military storage compound, in a (sub)tropical climate, maybe Paradiso. Lot's of cargo, a few administration buildings, compound walls, heavily defended gatehouses, fences etc. all slightly derelict and maybe starting to get overgrown.
So I'll go rather heavy on the weathering. I mean deserted in a humid and hostile jungle environment, hello?

Just remember how much of a big deal they make about the jungle in Paradisio. That stuff is the most aggressive plant life ever. Some of it can kill you outright, some of it can eat you, and control teams need to go out with heavy flamethrowers and fight back the jungle on a daily basis.
That's a whole mess of plants!
I've been waffling about doing a sort of modular board, or doing a solidly built, detailed, scenic sort of setup. I think the scenic setup can look better in the long run, but the inability to shuffle buildings around could make play stale.
I should start off slowly first I guess.
and
I take for inspiration.

Those are my leanings terrain-wise as well, although I won't be producing anything for a while.
I think you have to accomodate modularity to one extent or another regardless. You are going to want to get your minis inside those buildings, so you are presumably already setting up to be able to remove each floor of the building.
If you give each floor the scenic treatment, then your modularity comes from being able to switch out different floors, walkways etc. You can even take it all the way down to the board, have the bottom layer of each building be the basement inset in the board that you can dress up as a construction site if you want to remove that building entirely for a game.

Oh man... basements...
I didn't even think of that!
I'm trying to figure out a parking garage that is stable yet able to be dismantled.
I am also considering making it out of metal, or at least making the tops metal, something magnetic, and then layering something very thin over it. That way you can magnetize your model's bases, and when you lift off the layers you don't have to worry about knocking people off or having models slide all over the place.
Hmm....

And this is the best one ever (click for bigger):
Now seriously, the best boards are scratch made. Even though we have lots of stuff to buy and build great boards already (that board by Antenociti is gorgeous), that one on Matakishi is a great example of incredible scratch-built stuff.
And i'm still itching to make something out of Worldsworks papercraft scenery, and/or the Tommygun stuff

Yeah, I agree with the breakdown on Matakishi though... I'm not about to buy a bevel machine just for a table. And since I am using black foamcore, it reacts better to paint than the white glossy one.
I've picked up the Terraclips "Streets of Malifaux" pack for a steal on boxing day... what do you guys think of it? (The clips were full price though)

Whilst it's good to see all the terrain suitable for infinity popping up everywhere, it would end up looking just like EVERY 40k table if everyone had the same scenery - so scratchbuilt stuff is still good for a change. I'm going scratchbuilt because I don't have the money for most of the pre-cut stuff, and time is something that I have in abundance.

I think the malicious software warning comes from the second picture in chemical cutthroar's post. It links to a side that has issues according to Norton.
Should be save since the picture is the only think over here, I think it's more about the history of the other site.
As for scenery: after I finish my FoW stuff I will go back to making my Home Depot Terrain.

I found this site which sells scifi molds that can be used to build really cool buildings and scenery. Like spaceship interiors, machinery, piping and other cool scifi stuff. Also has fantasy stuff too.

Anyone have experience with this site? Also any good links for casting guides?

Here's a review of them. I'm in love with that tomb he did. And linked in there are a couple of guides.
The Matakishi table has some moulds from the sci-fi line of bricks, so you can see them in action outside of their site.
Have in mind, those are for making bricks out of plaster, so the end result is bound to be a bit heavier than with standard MDF buildings or papercraft, and will take more time and effort to make than with those (although if you're a Lego and/or Minecraft fan, this will be a dream come true)

That Hirst stuff looks fantastic (and how cool does that look with the Star Wars guys fighting over it? ) - I've saw a truly fantastic Mordheim board that was made with it once; individual paving stones, streets, buildings and all. Looked absolutely amazing, but it is a lot of work! So, I think you have to be set and have some serious time put aside with it. But, no doubt the results would be worth it.
