And a good thing too! (IMHO)

Apparently I've been through your thread, but not your gallery. Even more old school goodness . I have the same knights, but not the steeds unfortunately...

Makes sense to maintain your existing colour scheme and theme - don't let upstarts like me sway you from your vision!

That's one of the coolest things about Old School Chaos-- there is no wrong way to paint them.

I love the old metal Chaos Steeds--they're heavy enough to brain someone, and they are big enough to look like horses instead of little petting zoo ponies like so many other Citadel horses from that period.

I think these guys are finished:

Of the three chaos centaurs, I'm most satisfied with this palomino dude. The golden hide with the off-white "mane" and tail really pops, IMO. I'm not wholly satisfied with the armor plates, but that's an ongoing challenge that I'll keep working one

I'm happier with the human parts on this bay fellow than the horse parts. His back muscles were really easy to paint (I'm guessing he's not a natty), but as I complained previously, whoever sculpted these guys didn't know much about horses. I went back over the mane and tail and did another round of highlights, which helps a lot. I also rather like his one white sock.

Of these three, I like this guy's sculpt the best-- a two-headed cyclops is very Chaosy--, but the black hide and hair lack something. I'll almost certainly redo his wristbands to make them stand out more.

A group shot:

I did a lot more with the bases than I usually do. The tall grasses are from bristles that fell out of the broom, the shorter plants are bits of vegetation that is mixed in with my basing sand plus some model rail foliage. The tufts are a little too bright for the rest of the base, but that's all I had to work with. Once the glue is dry (they aren't self-adhesive), I'll hit the tips with a drybrush of something to help tone them down.

Next up, I have finally found a use for some old Mars Attacks! models. Stay tuned.

See...

This would have been a perfect place to use some of your more, uh, interesting horse colors from back in the day!

But very, very nice! Lovely work on those old Centaurs. I totally forgot about the two-headed centaur. Very nice job, but I’d agree the bracers could stand out a bit more. Some nice steel/silver would work well with the palette he’s (they’re?) in.. And I agree that the palomino looks great.

Great work as always.

JohnS

For what it's worth, I considered going that route. Speaking of which, I'm calling the centaurs finished:

Feel free to vote for me in the Dakka Painting Challenge poll.

A couple of weeks ago, my son and I played a game of Starbreach. It's very much a first edition game (it needs some polish and clarification), but I enjoyed it. After, my son and I spent some time "snooping," which is his word for diggin through my unpainted models. We pulled out Mars Attacks!, and I realized that I could actually use a lot of the models for SB. I decided to paint up the Tiger Corps dudes as Interglactic Marshals. The paint scheme was inspired by 宇宙刑事シャイダー (Space Sheriff Shaidar, an old Tokusatsu series). Since all of the Space Sheriffs have gleaming metalic suits, I decided that this would be the perfect time for me to try my hand at NMM:

Naturally, they look better in real life than in these huge, blown-up images. I feel like I'm getting the hang of the lighting, but I've still got a lot of work to do on my blending. I still have seven or eight more of these guys to practice on, though, so I hope to show some improvement. And I'll have another playable warband and a few less unpainted models taunting me from the Closet of Shame, so it's a win all around.

I'm still really new to this technique, so any pointers and feedback would be much appreciated.

If you're painting guys up like Shaider you realize you need to do Gavan and Sharivan right?

The world needs more tabletop tokusatsu!

There were a lot of nifty models in MA!, but they kind of suffered from the material. They're not quite a squishy as Bones, but the details are a little soft. Later generations of board game plastic seem to have overcome this. That said, higher contrast between highlights and shadows makes up the difference.

I do my best to expand everyone's horizons. I expect that Sharivan will make an appearance once I a) get sick of blue and b) research red NMM a little more. Gavan is all silver, and so a little less interesting visually, but I may go that route with the commander.

Thanks. Here are some more:

This first guy is another unnamed Tiger Corps trooper, this time with a different gun and a face like a hammerhead shark. He looks pretty good in real life, I think, but the super blown-up photos in the gallery make him look horrible.

This guy is a named character in MA! Shadow is apparently second in command of the Tiger Corps, and carries a sniper rifle. I'm pretty happy with how his visor turned out.

This last guy is "General" Jed Jaret, the only human member of the Tiger Corps, so naturally he is the leader. I was getting tired of all the blue, so I modeled this guy after another Space Sheriff: Sharivan. The face is tiny, and it took me a couple of tries to get it as good as it is (which isn't really very good). He's standing on a severed martian head, but it blends into the base--I will probably go back and redo it at some point. Here is a group shot:

Finally, here are the models I'm entering in the Dakka Painting Contest for June:

The theme is In A Supporting Role, so I went with this Wrenchmouth and its handlers, from Bad Squiddo's Ghosts of Gaia line. I may or may not post WIP photos of these guys-- my painting is pretty sloppy pretty much until the end, and I'm not usually keen on showing unfinished models as a result.

Love the blue! Really looks like it belongs in a sci-fi setting. And the streaks of gray in General Jaret’s hair is awesome! I’m always impressed with the diversity of models that you are working your way through.

Thanks. I'm pretty pleased with how my NMM efforts are turning out. I'll have to try it on steel or gold or some other actual metalic colors.

Jaret's tiny little face reminded me of the pre-MCU Nick Fury, so the streaks of grey just seemed natural to do.

Finally, diversity is (in this case) a lucky happenstance stemming from years of buying New Shiny Things and then not having time to paint them all until now. It does help stave off boredom, though.

Mantic's stuff, while still hit or miss, has improved dramatically in recent years. I suspect your 3D printer will keep you busy enough to resist the temptation.
Also, I imagined him being closer to Momaw Nadon than Admiral Akbar.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I have just a few more nodels in that set, but I decided to work on my entry for the Dakka painting comp first. I think they're finished:

This a wrenchmouth and its handlers, all from Bad Suiddo's Ghosts of Gaia line. 'I've enjoyed painting all the models I have from this line, but I think I'm getting tired of them. I only have one more to go, and then I'll call this project complete.

In addition, I threw this together today:

It's going to be a transporter pad. The base is a container for camembert cheese, glued to an old data DVD for stability, and with some various plastic bits added. I've been wanting to use the cheese container off and on for years, but finally got around to it when I read the Warp Gae Control scenario in Starbreach. I remember getting all sorts of ideas for terrain from the d1000 tables in the original RT rulebook, and once this thing is finished I might have to dig it out and read through those sections again.
