so I was thinking of using a space marine codex with my Black Templars because, well its getting hard to compete with all the new units coming out I was wondering if it would still play kinda the same or if I am going down a road that Ill waste my money on

You can use every BT model for the normal space marine book. While you can't add scouts to marine units, everything else works.

The only unit that you will have to retrofit is terminator command squads with apothecaries and sword brethren. The sword brethren can be assault marines though.

Or you can use the Black Templars codex and all of its funny little quirks, like the buyable Tank Hunters skill, no character squads, and Machine Spirit-powered Vindicators.

Black templars does have a more melee focus, in my research to add BT as allies to sisters with the new edition, I found that space marines were better allies so I got the space marine codex. However, do realize that you might have to refit your space marine troops, as BT has a more melee focus while space marine codex only allows the commander of a squad to carry chain or power sword. If you only had bolter black templars it wont affect you though.

Don't give up on BTs!

They still have an edge when you play them right. I won 2/3 games in a friendly tourny yesterday.
Granted they are not uber-competitive but they still have some tricks up their sleeves.

Some shootty highlights:
-Dual heavy weapon tank-hunting termies
-cheap lascannon initiate squads
-POTMS vindies

Some assaulty highlights:
-blob MEQ assault
-rage USR
-fully kittable HQs for CC beast mode

Anyway, there is still some life in them.

As already pointed out, stick with the BT. Tank hunting cyclone terminators are amazing!

If you use the C:SM for templars, you won't get the full feel of what it really means to play as templars. It might not be easy to win. But when you do, it feels great.

Honestly, the BT codex is pretty terrible at running what I think most people feel should be the BT play style, which for me means crazy close combat marines and vindicators. The only strengths of the current codex are msu las-plas crusader squads, tank hunting terminators, and cheap land speedy typhoons, none of which scream "Black Templars" to me. I'll be using the blood angels codex to represent my black templars when I play them.

You don't have to ignore the assaulty/in-your-face aspect of the Black Templars, you just can't strictly rely on it.

I run a terminator-heavy BT list, with lots of shooting options, but I do keep two very assaulty units which serve as my main distraction and objective-grabber/contestor.

The enemy just can't ignore the assaulty units while the shooty units blow things up in the back. It's been working well so far (been beating Crons, Chaos and SMs pretty well).

If you want an assault-based army, I guess BAs is a good way to go, but on a tactics aspect it does not really fit (for BT fluff).

On that same line, if you want an assault-base army, vanilla dex is definitely not it.

Templars are still a fairly viable Codex; they're a bit dated, but not much. They do foot hordes better than most armies, and Sword Bretheren are still powerful and competitive when weighed against other Marine armies' veterans due to the Veteran skills.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

5-6 units of 5 initiates with lascannon and plasma gun!
3 units of 3 speeders with heavy bolter and heavy 2 missile launchers
Aegis defense line and as many rhinos as you feel are helpful, then you can go ahead and make yourself something to do some forward scoring, or ally for it. Anti air would be lovely too!

There's lots of neat crap in that dex. Lots of super reliable firepower and decent fighting units but BT make for a great core to build a competitive list around. Used to love playing doubles tourneys with my mate and his BT static shooting and skimmers while I used night scythes and drop immortals and night fighting.

Don't expect BT to stay a great shooty army for long, the new codex will likely make them into a tide of somewhat wonky assault marines, land raiders optional.

It's just a show, I should really just relax... It's just a show, I should really just relax... It's just a show, I should really just relax... It's just a show, I should really just relax...

It is worth noting, though, if you have Tyberos the red wake and the IA10 rules for him, you can make a pretty cool Black templar army.

-CCW's on tactical marines
-access to sternguard and other cheap options
-Replaces combat tactics for Furious charge (and rage if unit gets a CC kill)
-can take 1 Lightning claw terminator squad as a troop choice

Thats a cool idea but it only gets the angry idea across.

I've found the BT codex to still be viable, particularly grimaldus who's become a real beat-stick , with rage and his holy relic you're getting 8 attacks at str6 with re-rolls to hit. Run him and a load of guys up the board and plow him into a unit of your choice

Its only a matter of time before the templars get an update according to the rumors thread were going to get a WD update like the blood angels did http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/490332.page
