Ah yes, unfortunately I have absolutely no idea where I can find Plasticard or the like in my area.
So far I have been cutting up a clothing store members card to use. It's a little thicker then I'd want but the real issue I have it how difficult it is to cut through. This is what causes some pieces to inevitably become wonky. I have done my best to correct this however the best solution would be to use something better suited for the job.
If anyone can suggest a more appropriate material I could work with it would be much appreciated.

Do a quick search on ebay, look for plasticard, plastikard, sheet styrene, evergreen or plastruct - should bring up a few hits with Australian based sellers... I'd go for quite thin - maybe .25mm or .50mm if you can find it. Not sure what the Aus dollar is to Sterling, but 10 A4 sheets of .50mm is about £7.00 inc P&P from my seller (on ebay)

Use a good sharp Stanley blade or equivalent, not a hobby knife (X-ACTO) to cut it, score gently several times, then you can just snap it off. I love working with styrene, it's great stuff

BTW, like the idea for these guys, look forward to seeing your progress...

Edit - for the price...

Okay, so I know it's been a while, but as I'm sure you all agree: Life gets in the way.

Anyway... I've been working hard on these guys in the past few weeks to bring you an update on my progress.
I've come a long way since the first submissions and while those particular models are still a WIP I am proud to present to you.......!

My Ninja Stouts! (Neophytes)

They've been base-coated black and are yet to receive a paint job:

They're built using a mix of PA arms and regular scout arms

I gave their pants more "puff" with GS to emulate the ninja look

^This guy didn't get new pants

^being the only uncovered head, I decided to GS him a slick ponytail [NOT SHOWN]

^Not much to say about this guy... Kinda the 'runt' of the 'litter'

I'm having a somewhat difficult time deciding on a colour scheme and chapter name so I encourage you to voice your ideas!
Any and all suggestions will be appreciated

Now for a sneak-peak of what I'll be working on next
Cheers

Also, I've decided to take Grey Knights over Tau as my allies.
I'm already looking forward to seeing what I can come up with though I already have a couple ideas

Thanks
Yes, I've had my eye on those katanas. I am planning to use them as a 'count as' for any power sword.
The heads are okay but there's only two of the five that I would actually use, more than likely to end up on a Marshal and/or EC.
The power plants... not a fan However the banners would certainly come in handy.

I should probably note that I'm building this army so that I can play them at my local GWS. So I will be minimizing how many 3rd-party bitz I include in my conversions.

On Nimbosa, cramming as many guardsmen into troop carriers as possible.

For a color scheme, what about red armor with black joints for the marines? And dark grey and black with the ninjas? If you haven't decided on a chapter symbol, here's an idea: 死 It means death in Japanese, Hurray for google translate!

I think a muted red on the armour would look good, I might try various (but similar) colour schemes on different models as samurai armour was usually individualised to some degree. Possibly colour coded squads? I have much to think about, but thanks for the suggestion!

I use a clear, solid piece of plastic and use it to roll out green stuff to a thin strip (about half the with I want the final rope to be). Then I let it cure for about 10 minutes so it retains it's shape while still being moldable.
After that I cut it in half and lay the strips next to each other. Then it's just a matter of gently twisting them around one another and stretching where necessary to keep the rope even.
The ends usually end up a bit stretched and squashed but everything in the middle is damn fine

Wanting to equip my Sword Brethern Termies with CF but how would I go about representing this in bushido-ly fashion?

I was thinking possibly using a closed-hand Power Fist holding a Striking Scorpion Chainsword.
Basic example:

However I am unsure as to the scale of the SS Chainsword.
Perhaps a Biting Blade would be more to scale?

I like the green stuff on those Space Marines. Good job.

While I'm not a fan of Samurai Space Marines (I'm generally against cross-genre 40k), I do like your scouts. I saw that you don't like Kromlech's power packs, and that's cool. But I think their helmets would fit your space marines. In fact, without the Samurai Helmets, I'm really not seeing Samurai in your PA guys. The Scouts look good, though.

Those Kromlech Samurai Heads will definitely make their way into my army. more than likely to end up on my Marshal/EC. One even looks like it would be right at home perched on a Techmarine
As for the rest of the PA units, I agree. They are not as samurai as they could be.
I've been looking into styrene sheeting and it seems to be exactly what I need; Specifically to layer around the back of the helmets to replicated the armour there.
It would also likely be more workable as material for the crest of the helms.

Ultimately, this is kinda what I'm going for:

Still a fair way off achieving this look but I'm hoping what with the styrene sheets I'll be able to achieve this look.

You'd think These guys would be well under way by now (at least I did) but a lack of direction and resources has been holding me back. I've been putting some extra time into planning these guys out a bit further in terms of how I am going to achieve the look I am striving for. I finally pulled the trigger and ordered some samurai heads from Maxmini. They're quite detailed and are the right sized heads for SM's. In terms of sculpting, the resin used is much tougher to cut through than GWS resin which is a slight nuisances for me but I am also less likely to cut through where I would not want to. In any case I've finally come to accept that I wont be able to build these guys on GW bitz and GS alone.

CURRENT PROTOTYPE

I'll be attaching small zigzag strips of paper (shide) to the rope on the shoulder in order to form what is called a Shimenawa in Japanese
These are usually found in or around Shinto shrines or temples.

There will be a lot of Shinto influence in my army, being the traditional Japanese religion. Conveniently in Japanese culture and language there is a close relation between Heaven and the Imperial.
Thus leading to the naming of my army:
天の侍 - Ten no Samurai
Which translates roughly to:
Heavenly Warriors
But can also be read as
Imperial Warriors/Samurai

Tell me what you think
(And if you read/write/speak Japanese, please correct me if I'm off with the naming)

Oh my, that is some great GS work, i am jelous.

I was thinking for a while now how cool it would be to see some samurai space marines. However they are lacking the flags (Sashimo, i think they're called).

Here are some, the only problem is they are 8 bucks for 5. Not really good for a full sized force but if you are just doing a few models i think they would look splendid.

Also there are the puppets of war heads that i once saw and thought would look pretty cool on space marines: http://puppetswar.com/product.php?id_product=141

So while I was waiting for greenstuff to dry I started brainstorming for some viable fluff ideas.
This is my first time writing fluff so be kind and please help me by pointing out any inconstancies I may have overlooked.
This is also a (very) rough copy of their backstory. As such, names of people, places, and things are still in the works.
I've decided I want to flesh out their story over three parts.

Chapter Info
Chapter Name: Heavenly Warriors - Ten no Samurai
Founding Chapter: Black Templars
Founding: [DATA EXPUNGED]
Chapter Master: [DATA EXPUNGED]
Colours: Red and Black
Homeworld: Kigen - Garden Planet
Fortress-Monastery: [DATA EXPUNGED]
Speciality: Bladed weapons
Strengths: Close Combat
Battle Cry: [DATA EXPUNGED]

P.S. [DATA EXPUNGED] means I have not yet decided.
P.P.S Fluff may be subject to Tzeentch change.

Part One: Origin

During the First Dark Age of Technology a Terran Nobleman of great wealth decided to start anew away from the ever growing and ever changing Human Empire. He sought a simpler existence away from the turmoil of a rapidly expanding society and wished greatly for his people to reconnect with their ancestral traditions, believing they had become selfish and dishonest.
Taking with him his fortune, family, workers and anyone wishing to take part he set off on a long voyage across the stars to seek a new planet to call home. During the voyage the workers and crew were taught the virtues of honour and took part in ancient homeland traditions while the soldiers were shown self-discipline and instructed in the way of the warrior.

For several generations the ships hopped from star to star, finding only gaseous planets, planets too close to the local star or too distant to be comfortably inhabited.
The Nobleman grew to a great old age, his body and mind kept sharp through a mixture of medical and herbal treatment, exercise, and meditation. His continued presence on the fleet gave his people hope as they passed their leanings on to younger generations born during the voyage.
After some time however his health began to fail him. He was now the only living person on board to have seen Terra having outlived his own children. However he was still determined to see his dreams come to fruition.

On many occasions throughout the voyage the fleet was set upon by hostile xenos. These encounters allowed the soldiers to hone their techniques keep their skills sharp. It also provided an opportunity for new recruits to prove themselves. While each skirmish served to teach a valuable lesson in the ways of war they were also hard times for the fleet. Many soldiers and crewmen lost their lives in defence of their continued journey.

Things were not looking good for the voyagers. Despite constant repairs and maintenance certain components became too worn and would soon cease to function without replacements.
various illness plagued the fleet due to dense population, over-recycled air, and medical shortages. Travel between ships was quarantined in the hope of decreasing the spread of the disease.
The Nobleman himself became sick and in his age was quickly bedridden by the illness.
With the Nobleman too sick to direct the expedition the various captains of the fleet ships were left bickering over the fate of the voyage. Several captains wished for the fleet to abandon their quest and simply turn around to make a bee-line for the nearest known human colony. The Captain of the flag ship, the Nobleman's Great-Grandson, disagreed however wishing to continue on. The captains who desired to return to Humanity begrudgingly accepted their orders, knowing that to do otherwise would be considered cowardice and bring shame upon their vessel and it's population.

Finally, when things seemed most bleak and their cause almost lost they happened upon a pink star with a singular planet in it's orbit. The Fleet's sensors indicated that beneath the heavy cloud cover existed a breathable atmosphere, complete with local flora and fauna.
As desperate as they were, the planet seem like a verdant paradise. Each ship touched down on their own habitable continent.
The old nobleman himself was the first of the fleet to set foot upon the grassy ground. The people cheered and shared a collective joy as the nobleman took his first shaky steps through the tall green grass. A single tear falling from his eye as he christened their new home, "Kigen"

I kinda wanna write that the old dude dies the next day while meditating before the sunrise, the sunrise being pink and cloudy and generally a beautiful sight to behold, but eh.... i dunno...

That's all I got for now folks.
I'll also be hijacking my own first post as an introductory page where all relevant chapter information (including fluff) will be accessible.

Hope you enjoyed Part One of my chapter history. Look forward to Part Two: Rise of the Samurai!

No, not pollution at all I'm afraid this thread hasn't seen much action lately (though if all these ideas I've been having lately are anything to go by, it's soon to start seeing more).
Thank you for these. They're really cool and I like the way you've incorporated both dragon and samurai themes. I hope to do the same with Samurai/Shinto themes.

Icarium wrote:They look good mate. For inspiration have you seen these:

Yeah's I've seen those. They're pretty dang amazing looking.
In fact they're so amazing that it almost feels pointless to keep this project going.

My original goal was to heavily convert most of the army to follow a particular trait/theme in a similar manner to some of the most notably thematic SM chapters eg, BA, SW, GK
However, since the new SM codex and the loss of the BTs rules to base my samurai off of, that has since changed and my new focus is on creating a Samurai Themed Inquisitorial Henchmen army.
I'm pretty adamant that this will work and function well in terms of rules and feel of each unit.
Here's what I've been considering.

Commanders:
Inquisitor Corteaz - Samurai with Art. Armour, Daemonhammer, and psyber-eagle/hawk

Castellan Crowe - Samurai with Art. Armour, Katana(Antwyr), and Wrist Cannon(storm bolter)

Here's a drawing of a Samurai-esque Corteaz that got outta hand at the bottom of a piece of paper. I was enjoying drawing it so I extended the page downward.
Spoiler:

The Daemonhammer will essentially be a huge War Mallet or Ōtsuchi in Japanese.
I've had a hard time finding info on this weapon but it exists and is a big hammer so the profile for it fits

Samurai:
Purifier Squad - Samurai with Power Armour, wrist cannon and Katanas\dual katanas\Naginata(Frc. Halberd)\Ōtsuchi ( War Mallet)

Crusader - Samurai with Katana/spear\axe and Shield (Samurai didn't use shields so a SS design will need to be devised)

Warrior Acolyte - Dependant on equipment but mostly samurai or riflemen

Ninja:
Arco-Flagellant - Ninjas with weighted chain sickles

Death Cult Assassin - Ninjas with 2 katanas\spears\axes

Assassins - Elite Ninjas with respective wargear according to Assassin type

Speciality:

Jokaero Weaponsmith - Old cyborg-hermit with concealing japanese hat, concealing robes, floating (magical) orbs, and a big ol' backpack (?)

Psyker - Shinto Preist

I have a couple of questions regarding the Warrior Acolyte,

In the Wargear Options it says that "up to three Warrior Acolyte may replace their laspistol and/or chainsword with:"
Am I able to replace both the laspistol and chainsword with two different listed options so as to have 2 wargear upgrades for each of those 3 Acolytes?
Or am I limited to one wargear option from that list per those 3 Acolytes?

Also, what do you think is a good loadout for Acolytes as Melee units and/or Ranged units?
I got kinda exited when I saw that they could equip Power Armour but quickly realised that it's pretty much a huge point-sink

I'd also like to say thanks to those who express interest in this project despite it still being in the messy, painful birthing stage of the plan

If anyone has any additional ideas at this point drop a comment and let me know what you think.

Peace out guys
