Subject: Looking for some fun things to try with IG. Give me constraints to play with.
So, as a heads up to the mods, if you absolutely feel this must go in tactics go ahead and move it, I won't mind. I just didn't want to post this kind of thread over there and have people sperg out the moment they realized I don't care if these lists are 100% optimized.
So with that out of the way, I've been getting a bit bored lately playing my IG. I've been using roughly the same list for about 3 months now and it's getting a bit boring as I've run into a wall with it and want to start fresh. In the meantime, I need something to get me thinking about how to use my codex better and so I had an idea. Ask dakka for ideas on constraints and or handicaps for me to play with. Can be simple as "cannot take meltaguns" to "list must have less than 30% of it's points in troops". I'm just looking for motivation to get me to think outside the box and try things I normally wouldn't take. Yes, I know many of these games will end horribly. Yes, I know I will not be winning tourneys anytime soon. No, I don't care. Constraints can be as silly or as silly as you want. The best ones I will use, and who knows, maybe even post a battle report. I may combine several small restraints as well if it feels like it'd be more interesting. Or if you want to be lazy, you can post an odd idea for a list that you had in the past and I'll take it for a spin.
I'm up for pretty much anything. I've got more infantry than sense, several leman russes (I believe at least 6 at last count) and 5 chimeras, 2 of which can sub in as artillery. I also picked up a valkyrie recently, so that's there too. To top it off, I also have around 1-1.5k in orks that I could use for added fun, with roughly 60 boyz, a battlewagon, some bikers, some lootas, 3 deff koptas, a boss, a big mek, and a pack of regular nobs.
Otherwise you can just post funny lists you've used in the past and how they did I guess This is a thread mainly for fun (hence why it's not in tactics) so have fun with it guys. Let's not get bogged down in stupid arguments over units or anything.

Kestril's idea is interesting, I may try that one.
One final question, am I allowed to put them in vendettas/valks? (because if no then the vendetta gets to be a vulture with punisher cannons haha)
EDIT: Jarl, I took a 2k list with that stipulation to a tourney once as a joke, let me see if I can find it. It was hilarious.
FOUND IT. As a heads up, the fact that penal legion was in this list should clue you in that it was more for just kicks and giggles. Best part? Got 5th place with this. Yes, I'm as confused as you.

1.) Bring a list with 30 stormtroopers. It's a blast.
2.) Bring a list with 3 deathstrikes. You may not take an aegis.
3.) Bring a list where the only heavy weapon you can take is heavy bolters. This includes hull and sponson weapons. Bonus points for at least one bolter boat punisher.
4.) Bring a mech list where all chimeras are in the 2x heavy flamer loadout. Stubbers are okay, but no hunter-killers.
5.) Bring Al'Rahem and have him outflank with at least two eviscerator priests.
6.) Bring a list where both HQ choices are primaris psykers.
7.) Bring a foot horde wherein you have as many SWSs as PISs.
8.) Bring a list with 6 hellhounds (or more). 'Nuff said.
9.) Bring a list with at LEAST 3 punishers. Make sure to bring enough dice.
10.) Add Nork to your CCS. Do not remove him until he gets at least one kill with Heoric Sacrifice. Think of him as your norkergiest.

The funny thing is that with a little tweaking (getting some lascannon/MMs for the punishers or switching some vultures to vendettas), you could actually make a pretty decent list out of something like this.
One final question, am I allowed to put them in vendettas/valks? (because if no then the vendetta gets to be a vulture with punisher cannons haha)
Sure. I'm eager to see what you come up with.
First draft attempt. That's roughly 80 or so carapace armored infantry, and harker's "My cover save is better than yours" squad. Terrible list, but at least it'll play quickly I look forward to trying this one. With my luck, I'll end up playing against DE or Flamer spam daemons (happened to me the first and only time I tried duravets)

Also, Kaskrin, that list hurt my brain. It goes against everything I've ever been taught as an IG player....
I also really want to try it

This thread is awesome; I just started trying out the Armoured Company as I was tired of my IG all-comers list.
I'd recommend giving those rules a spin for something different; a wall of Russes has lots of weaknesses, but has a great psychological impact on your opponent. Especially Eldar and their puny AV12.
My personal list has every Russ variant except the Annihilator, Eradicator and Conquerer, and not a single scoring unit in the whole damned army!
It includes one Exterminator CCT as HQ with every upgrade points can buy
1 Commissar Tank - Vanquisher, Elite 1, "beast hunter" shells for annoying my mate with a 3 trygon list.
Stormtroopers with 2x plasma in an outflanking Chimera Elite 2 (Didn't see that one coming eh? ACSS squads in Chimeras can do that)
Troops consist of every other tank I own;
2x Standard Russ, both with HB sponsons, one with a hull HB and the other Lascannon (kind of worthless now that lumbering behemoth is gone, plastic cement means they ain't coming off)
1 Executioner without any upgrades
1 demolisher with 2 sponson multi-meltas (again, victim of LB)
Punisher bolter boat with storm bolter on top, for 31 shots total
FA is 2x Scout Sentinel with ML and HK missile, 1 Bane Wolf and a Vendetta.
With all upgrades (not all listed here) it's about 1997, and extremely amusing to play.
Unless the enemy is BA and just deep strikes melta squads behind the line of tanks. That's not so much fun, but still amusing.

Oh, come now, you still have access to meltaguns/bombs/close combat/grenades/main guns for anti-tank. I mean, you can still take a medusa, you just can't outfit it with a heavy flamer.
As for the Norkergeist, have you ever played TF2? It would be like pulling out the samurai sword.
Leman Russ Battle Tank
Forward lascannon
Plasma Sponsons
Is that a pre-faq list? It would now be unable to fire both the main gun and the sponsons in the same turn, as ordnance forces snap fire and blasts can't snap fire.
My suggestion is mass respawning conscripts, with Al'rahem outflanking conscripts. So probably 2 platoons with 50 each, Chenkov and Al'Rahem, with 4 units of penal legion to add more fun. Sprinkle in weapon upgrades for the platoons to take out armour, and maybe some STs or sentinels too.
Or orks with ABG allies. An ork commissar tank would be fun.

Every time I look at that list I hear a person saying "scoring? Whats that? Oh you mean things that arent guns? Why would I take those? Guardsmen can't take punisher cannons! You must really like losing if you're taking things like 'troops' and 'scoring units' "
That initial shooting phase would take an hour to resolve too haha.
*Also. I'm working on some lists to fit the constraints handed out so far, but lists like this don't exactly write themselves overnight

Edit: Holy crap captain this is going to be difficult. The base cost of all this crap comes up to like 1500pts, I have almost no pts leftover for upgrades

Well there was this one idea I once toyed with but never actually made it come true. The point was "laser" only. So basically the only ranged weapons you are allowed to have in the army are:
So basically sentinels and vendettas would be the only vehicles possible to use in the list and comissars have bolt pistols so they would be a banned choice also.
There is also naturally the good old "no special characters" restriction but that would be too easy... unless it is tied to the "laser" list.
I shall rule the world someday utilizing my cuteness. And I already have one minion to help me do it!

Combat, infantry spam guard. There's nothing funnier than beating marines in combat with guard. (Literally no upgrades other than the occasional melta bomb.) Would also make a very interesting battle report against orks or 'nids

How about melee guard, every single unit you take as one purpose, getting your guard close enough to the enemy to swarm them in CC. I'm thinking huge blobs, Ogryns, etc.

Subject: Re:Looking for some fun things to try with IG. Give me constraints to play with.
Ok, so first of we have theCaptain's "take one of everything list". I had to make it at 2k because otherwise you can barely afford upgrades for anything. As for confidence in the list, I feel like Lt. Dan entering a kickboxing tournament. Will be a hilarious game though. I even took MORE ratlings and a deathstrike, so this will be one heck of a match Wish I could bring more Ogryn, but since I'll have to proxy them i wanted to keep them at a minimum. I would make an elysian list but have no access to their "codex" and only one valkyrie that I literally just got, so they're out (unless I can deepstrike platoons, in which case it will be my favorite list of all time)

+ HQ + (180pts)
* Lord Commissar (110pts) Carapace Armour, Melta Bombs, Power Fist, Power sword
* Ordnance Battery (140pts)
* Colossus
Heavy Flamer
This next one plays with a few smaller constraints combined. These are Ailaros's "all chimeras must have double heavy flamers", The Nork handicap, and assault IG. I was going to have the outflanking al'rahem platoon have the infantry outflank outside of their chimeras, using them as dirt cheap hell hound knockoffs while the infantry ran forward in an assault blob. Unfortunately, you can't do that, so now these are dirt cheap hellhounds with a meltagun and are able to score . While this list will probably fail horribly, the thought of a primaris pysker with biomancy and a priest in the conscript blob and another priest and a commissar in the 40 man infantry blob with Straken and all sorts of other shenanigans going on strikes me as amusing.
This one needs tweaking though. I feel like I could do something far funnier/awesome with the command squad. Maybe sack a priest to get the command squad Kell as well?

And then finally I would use Kaskrin's list, but the massive amount of proxying required to run that list would make it impossible for me. Anybody have some other cool ideas, or ideas on how to tweak those two lists a bit so they won't get curbstomped?

Yarrick + Straken + Nork + Kell + five eviscerator priests. So what if the unit costs 900+ points, USE IT.
(The only downside is that you could get two full FOCs of Vultures with punisher cannons for that many points, which would be far more awesome.)

I don't play guard but a funny thing my friend did was two Vet squads he called "GUARDSMEN WITH SHOTGUNS" they were some of his coolest models (Pig Iron I think) in his army. And they were two vet squads armed with shotguns. With a chimera each.
