I have been doing this hobby for about four years now. I've got a vast space marine army (I dont really do too much on now as it is quiet big), an average ork army (these guys break up the marine boredom) and just started a space wolves army.

My question is this, as I don't play 40k games I just paint, can you have too much stuff for one army?
Is there a limit or rough amount people collect in any one army?

I know some folks on here have way more stuff than me but as I only paint them and then put them away, Im thinking I should just keep starting a new army when I have lots of stuff or get bored.

I only started space wolves about four months ago and have amassed over 2000 points, i'm yet to paint most of it but it already seems a lot.

When you can't see the drunk guy at a party, you should look for the nearest mirror.

2,000 points seems like quite a large collection in that time!

I think that if you have more models than you can reasonably paint in a certain amount of time (I say two months - my summer holidays), you have too many.

I have far too many.

The thing is this: you lovingly look online for the set you want. You go to the shop and start looking for it. Once home, you tear off the plastic wrap and build the models. Then, as the excitement fades, you leave them in a box gathering dust. You then look online for a new set. Repeat 23 times.

I don't think so. One day, the fourth member of our group didn't show up and I had to pull another 2000 points of nids out for us to play. it was an epic sight to see 4000 points of nids and only have one primary detachment...

And my project to collect and paint the Deathwing has been held up for the moment while I wait for my codex and figure out how many terminators I will need now...

Yes.

When your wife starts complaing about models being in too many room and taking up too many shelves, then you have too many models.

Maybe it's the wife that is the issue?

You probably can at any point in time, if you're struggling with storing them and deciding what to paint. But once you've got that sorted and whilst you still enjoy it, then no, you can't have too many

Depends what your goals are really. For me personally, there is a limit and I have probably gone beyond it. I have enough miniatures and games now to keep me busy for decades. I have to mentally check myself now to stop buying more things otherwise the to-do list grows and nothing gets done.

You will need more terminators. You can never have enough Ill only have 15 when I get my new Deathwing box tomorrow, but I should have enough spares from that box to build another 5, making 20 total. Then its a box of assault termies and a DA forgeworld shoulder set for them. That puts me on 25, which I feel is a good number. For now.....

OP, I think you can have too many if it gets to the point where you have several armies and havent painted any. But it seems like the painting is what you like so I think you're fine

From the utility viewpoint of course you can have too many models. There isn't much point in armies you don't have time or opportunity to play with.

If you enjoy the collection, though, it isn't a problem until you can't find storage space any more.

According to my wife yes. But the truth is no, just find good storage solutions that hide how many you actually have. Unless thats not an issue of course.

How about when your models start complaining about your wife having too much room?

You could always sell the stuff you've finished with. I have 12,000ish eldar, 8000ish wolves and 8000ish chaos.
It's useful to have multiple armies as I don't get bored, can fit into any game I feel like and I loan them out so I can play other people who don't have their own.
I have a 40k cupboard. The bottom half is wolves, the top is eldar. Chaos now live on the side. My wife hates it. But she paints and lets me go out to play with people so I can't complain

This, coupled with the fact that you die once you paint your last mini.

You can never have enough.

If you die before collecting your body weight in miniatures you can't get into heaven.

Like the Pharaohs and Chinese Emperors of old you must be entombed with vast armies of miniature warriors so that you may fight your battles in the afterlife.

Also don't forget the dice.

Not where I should be

You can never have enough, I once sold my collection ( it was vast) due to pressure from my beloved wife. NEVER AGAIN.

The only conceivable reason to delay buying more models is space.

If you run out of room, buy a bigger house.

Great response people.

I've paint about a quarter of my space wolves stuff, as someone as already said, you get a new model start it but then get distracted by another piece of plastic heroin.

When I went to Egypt I'm sure I saw some imperial eagles and old rune's written on the walls inside the pyramids. Its like someone previously said, you need your army to fight your battles in the afterlife.
Or, only sell (some of) your models when you have more than your body weight in plastic, or sell your wife?

Some great quotes folks, thanks.
