After years of gaming there have been a few projects collecting dust.

I kept throwing non used models into a shoe box promising i'll come back to play with them.

One day while cleaning up my hobby area I found the shoe box and found 100+ marines with old paint jobs.

This hobby is getting expensive and my wallet can't handle all the army lists I want to put together.

Solution: Recycle old models and mountain of bits into a massive counts as army.

But what theme should I go with that I can play as the flavor of the month...

http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Angry_Marines

Why not? never painted a yellow army.

They can easy be counted as Grey Hunters, Strike, CSM, Blood Angels etc.

Here's a shot of some old models, notice the 1991 GW base...

Simple Green is a great paint stripper. This time I'm trying lemon scented.

Found 60+ screaming marine heads. perfect.

Tons of ork and IG weapons.

12 hours in the green. paint is starting to bubble and schluff off.

24 hours.

At this point I can scrap off the paint. A day with a tooth brush I should be able to get them paint free.

In the mean time I found some Khorne Beserker torsos.
1. Shaved off the Khone symbol (Sorry Blood god!). This will make a great spot for the angry marine icon.
2. Prepped everything for airbrush by mounting on corks and leaving different colored bits off the model for easier painting.
3. Used ork weapons to give over the top proportions and Angry vibe.

Primed dark Grey

Little Zenilithal lighting with white.

First color was Dark yellow from model Air

Followed by Golden Yellow

Hit some hightlights with light yellow

Here is a group progess shot

Painted Trim & guns bolt gun
Hit it with a heavy oil wash and pigments

not sure if I like the yellow....

Looks great. I like the bright yet dirty/muddy paintjob.

Might be just the picture, but did you hightlight the schoulderpads, or is it just plain base red?

For the shoulder pad i primed dark grey, sprayed white on the top 1/3rd then a light coat of Italian red. It looks more bright and highlighted irl than the picture.

Thanks.

I'm lookingforward to seeing some angry marine conversions. I always love those crazy/angry poses.

Test model looks great! This is going to be a lot of fun. I already like this thread for a couple reasons:

- Recycling models you would not have otherwise used. I genuinely respect that and have done it myself many times w/ my Plague Marines, Cultists, Necromunda, etc. If your Simple Green cleanup fails or is not as effective as you hoped, I've found that Mr. Clean is amazing! Drop in the bucket, 24 hrs later paint sloughs off like the skin of a Nurgle Cultists.

- ANGRY MARINES! The concept and humor of them has made me consider creating at least a squad of them and run them w/ 'counts as' Berzerker rules many times, but I always wind up doing something else. Someday I'll actually do it.

One thing that will bum me out and likely make me unsubscribe is when people start 'roleplaying' their replies. In my experience I've seen the Mods really crack down on Angry Marines threads becasue the language gets out of hand. So guys, if you're reading this, chill. Focus on the modeling and painting.

Subbed and looking forward to following this project!!!

Angry marines.. Oh, yes, YES!
I just live them! For me, they are a very likely outcome of fidgeting with the biology and physiology og humans (take that, Emprah!) and basically turning the "testosterone valve" to 11

So please, more marines! With epic slogans on their weapons! And maybe an "angry marine-launcher"? (google it if you don't know what that is )

4 Days in the dip. Time to scrub

Some of the models completely clean from soaking others will require some elbow grease and a tooth brush.

The pewter models clean the easiest, this was about 10 min of scrubbing.

Some of the older plastics we're hard. The small recess proved problematic and i had to go in with a toothpick for deep cleaning.

Even the I couldn't get past the primer on some models.

To rinse the simple green residue off I had a container of warm water on standby which i called the Bacta tank. It was funny to see which ones floated and sank. I thought to myself, "Purge the Heretic!"

After about 10 hours of scrubbing there were older paint jobs that needed a second soak, I let this batch go another 3 days

Post scrubbing i was able to salvage:
102 marines
4 special characters
5 scouts
1 dread
Not a bad haul.

Shot of my Frankenstein lab, body parts everywhere...

While these were drying I decided to get some "counts as" psycannons/heavy weapons built. I plan on making 20 of these. Bought 20 terminator Psilencer bits off ebay for 50 cents each and scrummaged though my necron bits. I used the sensor bit off of the necron flyer which I was to lazy to put on the last army http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/480329.page.

After the marines were dried I got the priming sticks ready. I'm doing the bases seperatly this time to make airbrushing easier. I saw the technique online but for got where. Take some free home depot painter sticks and use duck tape. Makes priming under the models so much easier and I can get all sides of the model in one go instead of priming one side, waiting for it to dry, turn over and prime, rinse and repeat

Spent about 3 hours pinning and corking for easier airbrushing.

Normally I'd just leave them on the priming stick and airbrush them that way but I plan on using cork bases and it's important to pin them for stability.

My Christmas present arrived... Not sure if I'll change the yellow and try the ghost tint method. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hY2G7SbKfeE

That's an impressive force. Again, if you're putting a lot into Simple Green, try Mr. Clean. I've never used anything that worked so well.

If you get the Minitaire paints be careful opening them. On all my bottles there is a seal and when you pull it off it tends to separate and you kinda have to "dig" it out the left over bit.

I understand they did this for shipping reasons and once you manage to get them off it's not a big deal. Just an initial pain.

I wasn't quite happy with the way the yellow turned out in the test model. Don't get me wrong its a good scheme but it doesn't translate to
the Angry Yellow.

I decided to try out this "Ghost tint" method by painting the model in a monochromatic contrast then shading the ghost tints.

Started off dark grey and then spayed Grey at 45 degree angle.

Then White at 15 degree focusing on some area's of interest like the knee pads, back of the legs top of the chest.

Time for the ghost tint.

Here's a shot of the post tint. You can see that it's very vibrant and that it slightly tints the darker area.

After it dried it had a really glossy finish. This didn't bother me as I plan to use oil washes to bring out the detail and matte varnish.

I wanted to see what the yellow would like out matted so I tested one.

The Left one is hit with testors matte. I love the results.

Cleaning out the Krome Airbush i noticed something was cutting up my rags and cue tips. Taking a closer look I noticed some sharp flash sticking out in the paint channel. It's easy to fix but if you get a Krome airbrush watch for it and make sure you do this inverted to reduce the chance of metal shavings going into the channel.

Finished zenilithal lighting the second batch then hit them with the ghost tint.

Took about six hours for 50 marine torsos to:
1. Primer
2. Medium gray (Rock in the Minitaire line)
3. White (Snow White in the Minitaire range)
4. Ghost Tint Yellow

At this point it was time to start on the shoulder pads.

The thought of free handing 100+ angry marine smiley faces seem daunting so I came up with an easier solution.

Using the paint stick method I hit both sides of the pads with primer.

I made sure to line the pads up with the bottom part facing each other. Most of the marines have thier arms forward and pointing out so it's important to have uniform shading since the pads are being painted sepratley.

I hit the top and side with white and then "Angelic Blood red" When the pads dried it left a nice transistion which is hard to see in the photograph.

My solution do doing the decals was simple.
1. Got a stencil from Micheal's and found the right size circle.
2. Hit the pad with white
3. Use the Ghost tint

The Ghost tint only shaded the white stencil leaving me a nice yellow circle which I can use a micron pen to draw the faces.

The technique was fast and effective. Took about 3 hours for 100 pads.

Time start on the heads, backpacks, and weapons...

Your minis look great, and it's awesome that you're doing Angry Marines. I have dumb question though. Where did you get the cork stoppers? I've looked around online but can't find ones that seem to be the right size.

I get mine from widgetco. they have a ton of different sizes and are pretty cheap. I forget which size I'm using at the moment, but they have measurements on all their offerings. just compare that to a termie base (40mm) and you should find something appropriate.

Thanks.

I've started, today actually, trying to do gradient painting on my new Dark Angels army. I've started with Deathwing, and I too have invested in the Minitaire paint line.

As of right now, I'm opptimistic. You can check out my results on the forum http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/507646.page or at my blog http://pensacolawarhammer.wordpress.com/2013/02/14/deathwing-paint-scheme-badger-minitaire-test-model/
