I'm with ph34r on this.
I also think it's a rip that each tile doesn't come with at least a door.

I'll agree that there isn't another company making anything close to this quality, however, regardless of how nice the latest Italian rocket car is, it's priced out of most hardened collectors' price ranges. It would just be nice if there was a BMW of terrain. Nicely made but affordable to most. That having been said, I'm debating between paper terrain and the disaster that I'd make with completely DIY stuff. Those are the Corolla and the Schwinn with a two stroke engine on it, respectively.

So the 'tank' pieces are clear resin, but hollow so you can add your own tank 'contents' (floating giant eyeballs or whatever)? Cool, I guess. I can see them selling a few of those tanks, stations etc for modellers just wanting diorama details.
But as neato as a whole 'battle in a spaceship' gaming table of these tiles would be, the price is just stupidly expensive. Still, maybe it will encourage more smaller manufacturers to do something similar and cheaper (e.g. Warmill's MODCON corridors).

How does one, exactly, fit an armoured company into Zone Mortalis? Give me the option to board the enemy with Leman Russes, and maybe we'll talk.

I guess if you are really dedicated you might think they are worth it. For most of us though this is what spacehulk tiles are made for, or just make your own. Products like this are why GW and forgeworld believe that they can charge whatever they want for product.

Of course the whole point of FW is to produce that top-end stuff regardless of price. Yes, most people will probably settle for less quality in their terrain if it means a lower price, but they're not the intended market for this stuff.

If anyone has a link to a company that does a similar idea for cheaper I'd appreciate it - I don't mean print outs/ make your own/ etc. but proper 3D terrain blocks? I do like these but as several have pointed out, it costs a fortune to make a whole board :(

Currently 4x4 so a decent size but the aim is (between me and a friend) for a 12x8 although under no illusion that will be anytime soon.

Umm, it's a variant designed for small scale games-- I believe monstrous creatures and walkers are the largest pieces allowed. It represents ship/interior combat, where tanks are generally not part of the equation.

What if I want to board a Craftworld? Then I should bring Titans for my boarding action!
I'm actually somewhat familiar with zone mortalis, decent concept, but requires too much specialized, expensive terrain that's completely incompatible with normal games.
Cityfight and the like offer a similar kind of tense, focused, smaller-scale warfare, while using assets from regular tabletop, just in new ways. That's the kind of thing I'm interested in, not something which requires an enormous, ultimately frivolous investment.

How many of these tiles would one need for a complete board, and could they be used outside a specific ruleset? They'd work for events, but I don't suspect that people would be bringing these along to regular gaming nights.
This. For something so large, they should have just 3D printed it. You could create new sections at the click of a button.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I mean, the Zone Mortalis stuff is nice, but it's nothing that someone with an average degree of modelling skill couldn't make at a tenth of the price. Just give us Ad Mech for feths sake. Or resin mega armour.

The containment tanks are an updated and better designed version shipped with the OOP Anphelion base. I have the Anphelion base with all the fixins. These new pieces are redesigns to work with the Mortalis tiles. I like the new designs for ship engagements but but I prefer the Anphelion base for Space Hulk. The corridors are better suited for that game.
On a similar note, Hirst Arts allows you to make a 6 x 4 table of terrain for very little money but a lot of time. The Anphelion base, even being recast, only covers a 4 x 4 area.
If I hit the lottery or work for GW again I'll get the Mortalis set, so that is pretty unlikely.

Will the completely open tile not make the board too open?
Obviously you can make the board in so many ways but where would you generally put such an open tile on a 4x4 board (or 2 as you say you intend on getting?).

Besides the issue of the first set being a bit too crowded you can always break up the blank tile with removable terrain. For example, use it as the floor of a hangar and put a flyer model in the center to break up the open space (without having more 90* corners and flat walls), or add some crate piles to give cover for units in the room without slowing movement across it.

That board looks lush!
But I would say it has not been laid out well which is why there are few engagement points. In 4x4 ZM boards we have played on we have had 4.
Where on that board would you sub in 1/2 blank tiles and how many meeting points would that then make?
Im not being negative towards them, We want to get more tiles and having an informed opinion of which tiles to get is fantastic. I have always used graph paper and cut out the tiles we own so that we can make boards with the paper to work out good boards to play on. I have made some new tiles to see some possibilities with these.
