Death From The Skies has sold out again in North America. From Games Workshop today:

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/wnt/blog.jsp?pid=8200020
Death from the Skies is currently out of stock in North America – it seems that flyers are particularly popular on that side of the Atlantic! As soon as the book is back in stock we'll let you know right here on White Dwarf Daily.

In spite of the unending complaints about the book on the forum(s) customers voted "yes" with their dollars. That speaks a lot louder to GW than the whining on the forums, so I would not be surprised to see GW put out more products that are similar in the near future. Death From The Skies has proven to be very popular. If the book had flopped and was sitting in piles in the GW warehouse things would be different, but it has sold out twice now in one of their larger markets. So like it or not, GW will see Death From The Skies as a product they'd like to repeat.

It's easy to claim overwhelming demand if you only print a few each time. Since we don't know how many they printed these 2 times..

The only thing we can say is they printed too few each time.

Also, it's effectively a mandatory rules update for 1-2 thirds of the playerbase, that will be pushed on anyone buying the flyers contained within it.

The problem isn't even so much the book, as how they handled it.

800 is a few when compared to the playerbase, really. And the fact that for a large part of those the rules replace codex entries (even if they are near identical).

800 was from a source with no backing other than 'some GW guy told me'.

On the other hand, maybe they just didn't believe people when they said the book was useless (which it is, unless you play codex marines) and bought it anyway.

At which point, they then realise, the book is, in fact, useless and so won't buy any others under that assumption.

That might explain the first run, but the second run?

As for it being useless, I bought two and sold one to a local. I am happy to have all of the rules for the flyers and like the fluffy bits. It is still padded all to heck, but it isn't useless.

Either way, haven't we beaten this horse to death?

Still around and available on the UK site,

it's probably just gone from the US one as it's sold out for the second time (as posted above) and will reappear when it comes back into stock

It's very possible, but the last time they at least left the place holder (picture and details) for the product. I don't know, just seems a little odd.

I changed the country to have a look and this is what I found on the UK site...

Due to exceptional demand Death From The Skies is out of stock in North America. We will make this book available to purchase as soon as we are able, in the meantime please keep checking back on this product page for any updates.

How can you say it's a success when we don't know the number of sales and it's a required supplement for multiple models?

Had the book in hand just yesterday. It isn´t too shabby, but indeed unfortunately a missed opportunity. The point cost on the Talon has changed so why didn´t they use the chance to do so on the Valkyrie? Whatever. A friend has it so no need for me to buy it. ;-)

Why do even simple facts get turned into some kind of metaphysical debate on forums?

Look, whether customers want to call it a success or not is irrelevant, from GW's perspective it clearly is a success. If they create a product with a certain production cost and then do a print run of a certain size designed to make a certain level of profit and it sells out, that is clearly for them a success. To have it do so initially in 4 hours, then have the second print run sell out again is more success than they were expecting. Besides selling out in North America twice, it also sold out in Australia once and is apparently doing well elsewhere.

Whilst it may be a financial success it is a huge loss in terms of not understanding how to fulfil the needs of their customer base when it comes to production and supply forecasting. In a fairly fickle industry having your product out of stock is asking for the sale to be lost to other competitors. Also having paid for FAQs (this was essentially what this was) risks alienating a portion of your customer base.

Hasn't it already been here? I mean, I remember when they did some stealth second printing codices with rules changes in them.

I bought a copy for myself, and when I read it all I could think was "I want my money back". Too many releases like that and people will adopt a personnel review before purchase policy that can only harm sales of a direct only product. All of that matrial should have been released in white dwarf, say three issues. I would have purchased three WD for that info, but I guess they don't want rules related info getting in the way of their adds in WD.

I lol'd. We should definitely make sure we do our performance reviews previous to purchasing anything.

Wait, so it is okay for $30.00 but not for $33? That extra $3 and more durable form really kicked it for you?

Curious, it looks like GW has drop it from their online sales.

It is no where to be found on its site. Any links that exist send you back to the main page.

You probably missed this as it's burried on the previous pages, it's because the 2nd print run is sold out in the USA

It will be back on the site when more copies arrive again

That's weird. Why not simply slap the Sold Out image on it like the Limited Edition Codex/Army Books, instead of removing it altogether?
