Update #73 · May 17, 2013 · 56 comments

I have returned from china! The trip was a fantastical whirlwind with so much to see and do. All the food I was treated to was excellent. I also saw a giant duck!

As soon as things are wrapped up and I can ensure everything is in its place I will be sharing manufacturing details.

Boxed Game & Card Components
Everything is going well on this front, our print deadline looms ever menacingly overhead and all of the artists have been cranking out amazing piece of art after the next for it. I've narrowed down the card stock choice between a snappy grey core used for poker cards and a black core which might be too a little too thick and make storage an issue. I've decided against the purple core which had great memory but the card felt too physically thin for my personal tastes. There are 700+ cards in the core box so… storage and weight is something to consider. The box we are looking at is 20"x13"x5" and weighs around 12 lbs. This is HUGE by the way and we are trying to optimize it.

Dice
I got the samples of the ten sided dice today! These caused me so much anguish and I am pleased on how they finally turned out. I spoke to A LOT of dice companies and learned quite a bit about dice making techniques and the different processes people were using. Spheres and curved lines are generally easy to make on dice, its edges, especially tapered edges where things get really difficult. The engraving needs to be sturdy enough so the small edges don't break in the tumbling process so usually there is a size limit on how small a hard corner or small detail can be. The company I choose in the end actually engraves at a slight angle which allows them to get much shaper edges, which was essential since the KD font has tapered tails. I also opted for making the dice in urea instead of acrylic as it has more heft and has that old school dice rolling sound on a table. As far as mass production ready dice go, I feel these are as premium as we can get. The next step up for dice is CNC machining or laser engraving the surface of each die then hand painting it. I would love to make more "art" dice this way in the future. But I wanted to start with a strong set of simple and highly readable dice in the core game.

Okay, the picture titled web kings curse is probably one of the creepiest and most tragic pieces of art I've seen for this world so far. What the heck is happening to that guy?

Looks to me like he's becoming one of the King's Men. So I guess that means their armor is a living thing. Creepy.

Never thought I'd see a complaint about the use of professional painting in a kickstarter project. Dakka never ceases to amaze.

Is it really a complaint? I think you're reading too much into it.

"I think painted miniatures are unnecessary." --- vs --- "I don't like that they showed painted miniatures. / They shouldn't show painted miniatures."

The more I look at that lion knight picture, the more I'm reminded of the old Final Fantasy/ Dragon Quest illustrations that used to be in game manuals back when those were actually a thing.

Very late 80s/ early 90s video game artwork.

I really hope Poots considers doing an actual physical art book down the line. I know we're all getting the digital one, but I want a big heavy hardcover book full of all the stuff that's going to get made for the 700+ cards we're going to get.

I also have to agree with Barzam- it does look like the armor is slowly enveloping the dude. The King's curse brings about the King's men? Which King? Dragon? Lantern? Sun? Burger?

You know, looking at that picture again and looking back at what it included in the game, I'm pretty certain that isn't one of the The King's Men, that's The King's Hand! If I remember correctly, the King's Hand is pretty much supposed to be his representative and is responsible for bringing new survivors to the settlements. I guess survivors can be conscripted into the King's service as his Hand. That'll make for an interesting mechanic if it becomes a gameplay feature.

And Tamburlaine, I can totally see what you're saying. It does remind me of some of that old Squaresoft artwork you'd see in manuals or Nintendo Power posters back in the day. Alternatively, they also kind of remind me of those odd colored pages manga sometimes have. The Web Hunt Phase (the one with the survivors camped out) really has a Berserk vibe to it.

The King's Men / King's Hand , who is their king? Is it the dragon king or another unknown king?

He should release a book with all the lore lol :p

I'm inclined to say that it's THE King. The huge one that looks like it's made out of human body parts. He was one of the final major gameplay add-ons.

Huh.

Never noticed that lantern festival expansion is going to include a handbook. Did any of the other expansions come with books?

I hope it's got all kinds of extra artwork in it!

Well that last update has made me think twice about getting into this game. Anything with made in china slapped on it I won't spend my money on. Sadly it is making it harder and harder to play anything haha

Does anybody except Games Workshop (and even they get SOME stuff from Chine) make their miniatures outside of China?

Can someone point me in the direction of how to paint that sort of style?

I've seen a Black and White color scheme of that sort, but I don't recall where it was at. IIRC, it was a dawn of the dead style game, and the figures had a horror movie Black and White motiff to the figures.

I've also remember seeing a GW diorama with something like a wizard or something.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Tons of companies cast elsewhere... Spartan and Hawk Wargames have their resin casts done in the UK.

Hard plastic is much more likely to be made in China, of course.

Part of the reason I am so interested in Trollforged is the intermediate quantity casting they may be able to provide, not needing to source from China.

Poots visited China recently in order to survey for KD:M's production.

Ahh. I'm sure that's for the plastics or printing. No way it's for the resin castin, though from my experience that wouldn't be a bad thing.

Is there a full run-down of what parts will be "plastic" and what parts will be "resin"?

I was assuming all the 'official' game pieces/expansion models would be plastic or some plastic-hybrid.

The only resin models will be the Twilight Knight, White Speaker, and the optional pinups, correct?

EDIT: Sorry, the term "pinups" escaped me.

I believe all of the game pieces will be plastic.

You could also get the pinups in plastic as an option.

I just can't believe that I missed the KS on this one :( . Really want to play this. It looks pretty solid as a game and I love the minis.

Well I went in "big" on this KS spending, about $400, mostly because it is all about "campaign" gameplay, while every other system has seemingly abandoned this once awesome game-mode. Since stuff like a Warhammer Quest reboot seem MIA, I kinda hope this one will scratch that itch.

If that is considered 'big' I don't know what to call my pledge amount... other than "crazy" and/or "irresponsible"?

I couldn't resist though!

But I went large on this one for many of the reasons you listed as well!

I've only spent more on one other KS project. Imbrian Arts took $474 of my dollars away and is the topmost of my pledges. KD:M came away in second place with a pledge of $336. I am not a wealthy man, and this is why.

I think when all was said and done I'd pledged 300 to get the Herald of Death qualification, which is just about the most I've ever spent on any kind of hobby purchase at one time. Now over the years, I'm sure I've spent THOUSANDS on Gundams of various shapes and sizes, but never in one big massive purchase.

When I add in my brother's pledge on top of what I've already got.. then things start to creep on up there...
