Am I right in thinking that a few people got to demo a showdown phase with the Phoenix? I can't seem to find any write ups/ comments about it. I was just curious to see how differently another monster would play after seeing so much on the white lion. Do we think CMON will be stocking the sci-fi twilight knight? Getting one direct from the KDM store and getting it shipped to the UK is rather expensive.

Yeah, he ran demos all Friday at Gallery 42.

I think he's just looking for thoughts on how different it played vs. the Lion.

Since it has it's own AI deck, filled with different actions, I'm guessing it plays quite a bit differently?

Exactly, the White lion seemed to have a lot of character. What was the phenoix like?

Didn't do the White Lion demo- but the Phoenix had a lot of "push" attacks. It was also quite capable of one-shotting survivors. We did benefit from our characters not starting out aged- after every round if a character had a doom counter they would age. It was beneficial for us since they essentially got wiser and stronger, but I we had been older when we started thy would have gotten weaker and could age into dust eventually.

Lots of insanity being lost and gained. Any armor the characters had was eventually destroyed- and then the survivor dead. It was a lot who positioning too. Dashing into the Eye of the Storm(blind spots) of the. Phoenix's wind attacks, or dashing in from of the tree or a fallen pillar to avoid being pushed out of range. Trying to bait the Phoenix into attacking healthier survivors.

The. Phoenix also had several other time-based abilities for flavor- certain hits would cause it to "rewind" the round:removing all damage and all other successful attacks it sustained, so we'd have to hit the location that knocked the survivor down before that attack went off to prevent it from striking or praying for a crit to ignore it; and stopping time: where it would "disappear" and reappear somewhere else on the board.

In the end only one character survived(same thing happened in the demo before us too).

Yes - thanks!

Good to hear that the monsters are REALLY varied - although I was sure they would be!

Yeah, each monster has a list of standard attacks it performs, plus whatever attack it draws.

I.E. White lion sniffs if no survivor is a threat plus attack(I think), Phoenix has three actions it does every turn plus the attack.

Maybe?

And I think we've already seen that one before...

But yes, eventually, I'd think most (all?) miniatures will also have Kingdom Death: Monster (or the upcoming KD: Heroes) game content.

At least I certainly hope so!

We've had the story,

but I'm not sure if we've seen the mini or just concept art for it ? (the lion knight himself is very familiar, the wailing smoke much less so)

The next game in the KD universe, where you're more of a...hero vs a measley survivor who gets exploded more often that not during monster encounters!

NO ETA on that one as of yet though!

Can't say that's not an apt comparison from what we know. Thanks! Evermore shall Stormcast Eternals come to mind when imagining the fate of brave souls lost in Kingdom Death.

Glad to hear they're not copy-paste encounters. Even in the two Lion demos I watched, things certainly seemed different enough to prevent them from being less than entertaining.

I suppose that makes some sense. If we're going to be dying a lot, then presumably we'll be running into the same encounter trying to kill the same creature previous not-quite-survivors failed to defeat. That being very repetitive would suck.

They should.

KD:M is basically Monster Hunter : the board game.

And there is nothing wrong with that.

I am a little disappointed that KD:M doesn't appear to be "classing" the characters like MH, especially with the way Adam was adding things to the sprues, but maybe that's OK.

"Classing" seems to be done through gear selection alone.

Plus a color grid system I don't yet fully understand, but maybe someone else does.

That was rumored, although I think I'd be potentially more interested in KD : Knights.

By the end of the KD:M fulfillment, I will be swimming in (human) Heroes. 4 each from over a dozen armor "kits". That'll be plenty.

However, I will only have a handful of Knights (Lion Knight, Flower Knight, etc.). Additional minor expansions of KD Knights would be welcome!

Besides, it's not like there won't be new pinups along with a new Monster or two.

Right, but I think that it would have been nice if there were a defined set of core weapon classes that were on each sprue, so that you could always have a Bow character, a Sword & Shield character, a Lance character, etc. The grid is probably overcomplicated, but we'll see.

The Grid System seems to remind me of a combination of 'Set' armors in Diablo and herb mixing in Resident Evil (if you are at all familiar with those franchises). Having certain color blocks line up in specific combinations grants you specific bonuses. It's all about maximizing your layout to get the most benefits you can, while not sacrificing good items someone else could make better use of in their own grid.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

It did seem to me during the Phoenix demo that we were wearing at least partially themed armor sets. I think one of us had a White Lion set with claws. I had a heavy all Leather set with a Giant Zambato. One had virtually no armor, but had fancy speed boots and clairvoyant rings. And the last I really don't remember but maybe Sinful can fill me in on it.

Major expansions (Dragon King, Gorm, Spidicules, Sunstalker) include a full armor kit of 2 males & 2 females.

Minor expansions (Lion Knight, Flower Knight, Dung Beetle Knight) include a few armor bits, but not a full kit.

You were basically a "tank" with sword and board, and mostly complete armor set. I had the bow, almost no armor, and the a Screaming Helmet that let me see the top 3 of the Hit Location deck once per game- my role was basically reliable damage with high accuracy. Guy across from you was dual wielding and was basically our "DPS". Guy across from me was more balanced, with 2 different one handers(iirc) and the rings that allowed him to manipulate the attack deck.

Actually there are "fighting styles" you can get- I believe our DPS had one that allowed him to crit on 9's as well as 10's. I drew one when I aged(and I think you did too, or the guy across from me did), which increased my strength on crits.

Ah! The guy across from me had a fighting style that allowed him to regain a survival point whenever he used one on a 6+.

Also every survivor can fight tooth and claw, so even if your weapon breaks you aren't completely defenseless. It doesn't do much, and has a low strength, but it's better than nothing.

Yeah I did have the Fighting Style that added +1str for my giant weapons.

And I will agree with MrChurch13 that "classes" are defined by gear alone, and there may be a few fighting styles that help out too. Some are probably better for certain equipment than others- for example the extra strength bonus on crits was mostly wasted on me, since my bow already had near max strength. It would have been a lot more beneficial to basically anyone but me with the gear I had.

Each survivor is basically a blank slate that your equipment and fighting styles add to.

What you don't like varying stats?

This character has 12 strength, but only 8 dexterity so he can't wield the bow.
This character has superior stats to everyone else so he can do whatever he wants better than anyone else!
This character can't do jack squat.
