Played with the airbrush a little bit. I'm still a rank amateur, but it's fun to use anyway

The red didn't work out as well as the blue. Either poor choice of followup color, or I was too heavy handed, or maybe just the wrong approach for the shape. It'll be easy to go in and fix it should I manage to improve upon it in the future.

I'm gonna put this here too since maximum feedback is required:

How's the additional scatter? Just enough, too much? Posters positioned well or poorly? Grass? Nothing is finalized most or all of the posters will need to be weathered. The pieces on the ground are where Mushashi tore down and slashed one wanted poster, but then he got interrupted

The Blue OSL looks great.

The Red could use a highlight to pop more.

I actually prefer the red, but then I tend to like less overt OSL most times.

As for his diorama, the posters are cool, but I'd be tempted to put them at a more haphazard angle, and maybe add some more so you can have them overlapping a bit, make the whole scene a little more like a rundown and dilapidated slum, which is the feeling the rusted fence and stacks of barrels gives me. Any maybe gouge some chunks out of the wall before weathering if, like chipped plaster? Depends on the feel you want to give it.

Oooh yeah tea for the posters that might work. I have to be careful it's glossy photo paper and the ink likes to run when it gets wet... but I still like the sound of that idea

And I have lots of brown ink/wash too if the tea is too much but they aren't.

I think part of the problem with the red is that going over the white had it turning out pink so I had to layer it on a bit heavier. Maybe I'll try a base of light grey next time, and or a different red.

I hear the call for more posters, I may need to dig up another set, perhaps in english this time to add to confusion and mayhem

So here's another shot, what do you think?

More angles from the hobby blog:
Spoiler:

All of the images will be flattened out and weathered up a bit for final implementation, this is just another test. I think I like the extra clutter though.

What about the grasses, too much? I like them a lot better like this than before for sure.

What about the little hazard signs on the barrels?

Yeah, way better. It now feels like a setting rather than a backdrop if you see what I mean, far more like the event occur in this place rather than the place existing for the event to happen. In other words, it's now a diorama rather than a display, if that makes sense.

I think it does, it feels more homey now, well relatively speaking

Just enough posters? Too many? Too much bare wall?

I think I'm gonna call it 'jobs a good 'un' for a bit and get to work on the remaining two actors and we'll see when those are done.

Yeah when I saw him with the rest of the posters I had to chuckle a bit But I can't read Chinese so the poster could be saying "save the caskuda" or it could be saying "watch out for enemy paratroops!" I don't think anyone else can read it either with all of the ads plastered over the top

Damn, that does look good. Are those all the Ice Storm counters?

as for the diorama, it feels like it's missing something. Would it be possible to add some crumpled up posters or trash to it? A bit of garbage would give it that that extra lived-in look.

Nah maybe a dozen of them got clipped off of my various boxen. A couple of wound counters (but not many things actually get wounded they just go to unconscious right), the immobilized, impersonator 1/2, prone, seed-embryo, one of the TO camo, maybe a couple more. 1" hole punch I also got from Hobby Lobby is quite useful for this. Any other counters I may need will get printed out on glossy photo paper and redone with some more round thingies (used them all).

I do have *one* magazine in the dio but it's off in the corner, I can see about making some more trash, I was thinking about it myself.

Those counters are amazing Grim. I like the way they turned out.

Hobby lobby is pretty cool. If you've ever been to a Michaels they're pretty similar. Basically it's just a big arts and crafts store so there's a section for fabrics, framing, art-both drawing and painting, hobby projects like model train stuff, model building kits like cars and ww1-2/modern and so on, some airbrush stuff, coin collecting section, beads, necklaces, all kinds of small subsections or aisles for all of that stuff, seasonal decorations, non seasonal decorations like cheaper wall art and paintings, display furniture type stuff, and so on.

Their prices are ok if you're doing small projects but as with a lot of things if you can find a bulk source you're better off, but it's a good place to pick up smaller portions of stuff to try, especially if you need to see something first. They run a lot of coupons or sales between 20-50% off but if the sale is up often enough you come to realize that's more or less the regular price doctored up, they do have a swanky 40% off coupon you can get in ads and on the phone app 1/day otherwise unlimited. I've known some people to get airbrushes and or compressors that way and it can be a decent deal in some instances.

I'm happy with the counters too, honestly I'm somewhat inclined to make my own counters for any games what don't have 1-inch rounds. Not for MA or DZ though since they're kind of cramped on 2x2' boards.

And another Ultramega marine (working title), the standard bearer. I was going to give the guy with the standard a big sword and leave the second axe to another HG, but I was having trouble coming up with dramatic poses for the right handed sword that didn't look bad with the standard. So I found a home for the squad's second (and last) power axe. This will leave four more honor guard with big-ass-swords I guess. Actually hmm. I should have five nemesis whatevers. Plus the thunderhammer, and two axes. I may be short a big-ass-sword. If this happens I'll simply employ a different version of massive sword, or maybe I'll even downgrade one of them to a regular power sword or a power maul (though the relic blade straight up trumps a power maul in all but attacks, it *could* look cool...).

The second unit is totally going to have dual-bladed dark angels swords even if it kills me. I'm not sure if I want to give the champion a thunderhammer or if I'll give him a relic blade too to keep the theme. I like the idea of the thunderhammer to kill tanks, but it may be too big of a thematic hit, y'know? We'll see, the standard bearer guy will be hard pressed to use a double-bladed sword and he may be venturing into poweraxe territory too. I guess they could pose like

X...X...X
..X....X

With the champion and another dualsword in front and the other two on the flanks kind of in a loose half-circle around the standard.

remember all five of these guys are getting giant bunny-eared lion helms-knock-offs if I can help it The champion may have to steal his helmet wings from the terminator sarge though.

Ok enough random musings thanks for stopping by

I think the rust effects that you have on the fence and barrels looks great. I can't quite decide what I think about the grass, maybe a little more ragged looking? I love all the posters on the wall. They'll look even better once you weather them a bit.

Those counters look fantastic! I'm going to have to add making some counters to my giant list of things to do now.

I'm still digging the Ultramega marines.

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

Thanks

The rust is super easy too, just paint your metal and then use the Typhus Corrosion (I like 2-3 layers) and drybrush on Ryza Rust. I don't own many GW paints anymore but their technical line is killer.

Here's what everything looks like now:

There's a little weathering on the posters, I'm not sure if I'll do any rips/tears or more discoloration, I may be calling this done but we'll see.

I'll be seeing about gluing that marine together soon, and then I think I'll look into painting them. I've got another model I'm going to paint in a similar way to how I maybe want to paint the marines so if she comes out well, then I'll know enough to move forward.

Which paints do you use primarily now?

I have a lot of GW paints because my FLGS has given me several for free plus I still owned a ton from when I had my shop.

I have some Army Painter washes and then a bunch of Golden artist's acrylics.

I want to try others I'm just not sure where to go next.

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

I used to use GW starting back when they looked like bolt-shells and ending with the first wave of flip-tops, with a couple newer ones here and there like the technicals.

I tried reaper but we didn't get along, I think they're for layering or some jazz and I'm just not that good of a painter to get along with them. I do like their black ink though.

I used a lot of vallejo but I just picked a color as I needed it so I had a pretty limited pallet. I've got some VMA too which seem fine but I've been using something else.

I saw the Badger Minitaire stuff on amazon for something like half-off one time though they were back-ordered. Once they go them back in stock I ordered a set and I've been using those.

I forget how many colors there are, maybe 84 if you count the 3-4 varnishes, and 12 of those are 'ghost tints' which are apparently more of a glaze than a wash. I think you can do cool things with them but I'm not there yet

The paints are pretty runny overall, as they're meant to go straight into an airbrush, but I use them all the time with my brush. Definitely not the consistency of milk, thicker, but they work fine for me. The whole line is a bit of a satin sheen though. Something to be aware of if you aren't planning on using a matte sealer when you're done. I almost always do unless I specifically want shiny, so it hasn't been a problem.

I used their gun metal quite a bit. But yeah they do tend to be either super runny or like... paste. In my experience.

I'll say that about the Minitaire stuff as well, their metals are thinned for the airbrush which makes them really finicky to work with using a brush. It feels like you're brushing on sparkles held in a suspension, you've gotta do a lot of layers. Several layers with the AB too but thats expected. The metal on the dio scenery was the gun metal equivalent in the minitaire line.

If you see the SOTAR 20/20 for under a hundred bucks it's an excellent gun. I can't directly compare it to an iwata eclipse or a badger renegade though as I don't own either... but I do like the sotar lol.

Been a little off kilter over the last week or so, but you have done so much. Makes me need to pull the proverbial finger out. Absolutely love the diorama bases. The Marines are shaping up as in your face epic and I really like the big bases of Ratmen, a pity Warhammer requires individual model removal which prevents the large bases of awesome, although I do plan on doing a few unit fillers to break up the massive regiments when I get around to them...

See My Crazy Army plan here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/521618.page#5517409
