Omnious Orc Shaman
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...
|
With Salute 2013 fast approaching (20th April 2013), the South London Warlords have released a preview of the free figure that they'll be giving away on the day. The Salute 2013 figure Painted by Kevin Dallimore For many years, we have produced a limited edition white metal figure, sculpted by some of the bigger and better known names in the industry - Adam Clarke, Alan Perry and Jacques-Alexandre Gillois (JaG), to name but the latest few. This year, we have decided to try something different. No, we're still giving out a free figure. No, we're still using an industry 'name'. This time, we're giving away what we believe is the first limited edition plastic figure produced by a wargames club. In keeping with the theme of 'Jason and the Argonauts', Steve May has sculpted this multi-part kit for us, and Renedra Ltd have moulded and bagged thousands of the sprues. You can build Jason with either a shield or a hydra's head in his left hand, and it comes with its own scenic base. Also painted by Kevin Dallimore I have to apologise for the next picture - the white balance on my camera has gone 'up the swanee', but I thought you'd like to see the sprue before Kevin got his hands on it... It's a beautiful little piece, definitely. Amazing that plastic sprues are not cheap enough to do for a limited edition figure like this.

The supply does not get to make the demands. |

Is it "real" plastic we're all used to, or some kind of resin/plastic made into a big sprue frame kinda thing?

As it is done by Renedra, I'd be willing to bet a testicle it is actual plastic.

That's really impressive, want that mini!
Salute gets about 5000 people through the door, so the numbers add up for production of a small plastic sprue.
Hopefully they'll keep selling them in future years, it would be a shame if the mould was just abandoned after a day!

They had the unpainted version up on Frothers (NSFW) last night, and it looks a lot better without the paint,
but sadly I can't find it there today or I'd link it across
(not brilliant, but a lot better)

Thanks for the lead OrlandotheTechnicoloured, went and found the bare plastic photos on Frothers. Gotta say, the KD paint job kind of disguises the details...

A plastic figure? Either plastic molding costs have come way down or they're taking a bath on the figure. Can they really be making a profit, or breaking even? Maybe they plan to deduct the costs from the ticket money?
Interesting...

I've never been particularly fond of the Salute figs (I still have last year's unopened in a box somewhere) but this one looks interesting.
It'll still probably end up in a drawer somewhere though

In my opinion are the details are poor and soft. The skirt he's wearing looks like a mess and doesn't look like natural fabric the way it folds, and the proportions look off. It's just not my cup of tea.

Bear in mind the figure is only about 28mm high is your hands. The photos are magnified about 3X the life size and do not give an accurate impression.

It's a standard historical wargames style non blended layered "foundry " paint job (i know this style is normal for historicals ) i would of expected something alot more polished for a promo shot.

GW uses layered paintjobs, too.
They're not exactly golden demon standard, but they do photograph well.
I think both the mini and the paintjob are great. It's a good choice of mini to appeal to both fantasy and historical collectors too.

The pose is awkward. It looks like he's tired of holding up a sword and a head for the damn picture already! Honestly, the first thing I thought when I saw it was "That looks like a historical miniature because it's boring." I wouldn't be surprised if the Perrys sculpted it. It looks like the kind of models I find stodgy but that somehow enrapture thousands of historical mini aficionados.

If you play historicals you need hundreds of figures for your army.
Hundreds of unique, dynamically leaping figures would look silly in ranks.

Plastic moulding is nothing like as expensive as it used to be, so smaller runs like this are possible (~5000 seems likely).
This is a free promo figure; everyone coming to the event gets one, so the cost will be factored into the ticket cost, but they'll have gone for what they felt was the most cost effective option (and with the volume of punters they get plastic doesn't seem too unlikely).
