Still no confirmation of what the second troops choice is in the battleforce?

:( Indeed.

Actually come to think about it, I'd hazard a guess that the fluff for the Riptide fluff is that it is the Tau's reaction to the pressing Tyranid problem, as a way of handling themselves against the huge bioforms of the Tyranid army. Especially as the pictures in the WD have them fighting Nids

It was the first thing that came to my mind when people were saying it goes against everything Tau. They are a very adaptive and devolping race.

So what's the idea then? They had to build giant suits to wrestle with trygons a la Pacific Rim, because blowing holes in them with their other war machines didn't cut it?

Nids are very hard to keep at range, like the Tau want to do with their enemies, with the spore pods, and burrowing big scary things, so maybe they needed a suit that could engage these big things, and allow the rest of the force to make a tactical retreat. I'll even hazard a guess that it gets hit and run.

Not wrestle, but pretty much. The fluff for the new suit is that The Tau like the style of mobile warfare that XV-8s provide, but they kept running into things the crisis suits couldn't handle. So the XV104 was built with heavier weapons and better armor/shields so it could serve to plug gaps in the line and draw the attention of big nasties away from the smaller crisis suits. It also has an experimental reactor which boosts its power, but isn't perfected yet, so potentially doses the pilot with radiation, though the pilots accept that risk to protect their comrades and buy time for the Tau to perfect the reactor design and new weapons systems.

Seems like the overcharge reactor will be the thing to allow for the supercharged plasma large blast or 3++ shielding, but has to make a gets hot roll when you use it.

There's a pic of the new battleforce somewhere in this thread. It has Firewarriors, Pathfinders, three Crisis Suits, and a Piranha.

I'm aware of what is in there, but since all Battleforces have at least two Troops Choices (except the Ravenwing one), that means that one of the other units in the box is a Troops Choice.

It would be very odd for there to be only one.

Odd because all of the battle forces include two... Except for the one that doesn't...?

So, I like that idea for the riptide fluff. kinda makes sense. Also makes sense that it could get HnR as well.

On a side note.

Why does tau not have melee drones?? im not saying super melee unit but something that doesnt auto lose in CC. Makes sense they wouldnt waste a Tau life in melee. Why not a Samurai dedicated melee drone? Something that could could charge or take a charge from a lot of things and maybe even win?

Tyranids will consume the universe!!! There is no chance for survival!!
.........eventually anyways.........

You could argue that for eveything Tau though, why not just have drones and robots fight all their battles controlled from safe distances?

Well, because (at least by the old Codex) they are a fairly war-like Race which was on the verge of annihilating itself through their own wars before the Ethereal showed up.

For that reason alone, they should probably be more on the front-lines than more docile races - say Dark Eldar or Orks - who don't generally wipe themselves out completely, no matter how much infighting is going on

True but their fighting doctrines do try to minimise casualties.

Also consider that they don't have the resources to expend drones like candy.

Drones are repairable, lives aren't replaceable, but I guess if it was for the greater good, it was all worth it. I suppose this is where there caste system comes in useful. Ensuring the only lives expended in battle are the soldiers.

leaked riptide development pics

on a serious note, I like the tau stuff. I am really happy about the rate of the releases. I am just glad i am away from home so the temptation to buy stuff is smaller. through i just added $300 worth of prepainted dark angels (7 dudes) to a friends deathwing army so I can play in a tourney over here in Japan.
once i catch up on my paint(so never). I will start a tau army but with demons and CSM needing love it might be a while.

From the comments. User: Kirby

Skyray can shoot and ground and air targets (one assumes at full BS).

Stealthsuits are better at overwatching shooting at BS2 (yay...).

Special character is "like" Chronus for tanks.

Tank Hunters. Potential cover boost. Tank can overwatch.

Hammerhead roughly 160-170 WITH character.

Special Pathfinder - Nightstrider.

Shadowsun has split fire. Maybe.

Riptide roughly is T6/W4/2 Sv/5 invul with the special option working on a 3 or higher (i.e. 3plusplus , better blast, etc.). Around 175 pts with Ion Cannon (S8 Ap2 blast; super charge takes to S9?).

Maybe more than 4 wounds - 5 wounds!? And more gun options outside of Ion cannon - supporting missile pods?

Fast Attack is where new fliers are going and we still have Pathfinders and Piranhas (which are cheaper I think).

All Ion weapons have a 'supercharge' option but at a risk (gets hot?). Drones can have Ion weapons.

Interceptor drones are in!

Repulsor field. D6 s4 ap- hits to attacking units at I10

Supporting fire allows other Tau units within 6" to overwatch a charging unit as well. Not sure if this is all Tau units or just specific types.

Markerlights are for all intents and purposes, the same. Buff BS, remove cover. BS can be buffed for Overwatch but not sure if this counts for Skyfire, too.

There is somethign called.... puretide engram neurochip.

6 different types of drones.

Grav inhibitor
pulse accelerator
recon drone (which can fit in the turret cupola of a devikfish and provide communication relays and fire support)

Cadre Fireblade -

IC with split fire, markerlight, supporting fire, volley fire (+1 shot for Pulse Rifles/Carbines if unit and IC do not move).

Upgrade for Fire Warrior units - not sure if an actual IC or just has LoS! properties, etc.

Kroothawk wrote:More by Kriby on 3++ http://www.3plusplus.net/2013/03/more-tau-picturez/ . Summary:

On Pathfinders: They compete with fliers so I'm guessing no option to move them and they stay in Fast Attack.

On Riptide: Elite.

On Kroot/Vespides: No new info.
There were some solid thoughts on Kroot before with rules, etc. but since they might not have new models soon, they might not want to showcase them. But yes, quite possibly they have been cut until this silly ally supplement book which would be frustrating but that would be very strange as GW generally never removes units from books. Squats being the exception.

On XV88: 85 pts gets S8 AP1 Skyfire for Broadsides; same statline; railguns are now S8 Ap1 base – rail cannons are S10 AP1. They don't lose Overwatch and they can still shoot at the ground at full BS. Not sure if they have S&P.
The way the ruling works is at the beginning of the shooting phase they can choose to have skyfire or not.
Yes the railgun has been nerfed though.
