First of all, I really like everything I have seen so far, especially that Shadowsun (my favorite Tau HQ) is still around.
The Fireblade is a thing I've wanted for a long time, but I'm not that happy with the model. It's a pet peeve of mine that no important character will wear a helmet I think I'll just convert my own out of some old bits.
About the fighter. Has anyone else noticed that it has its main weapon mounted in such a way that it can never target anything in front of it? I mean, it looks really sleek and awesome, but I can see the weapon mounting being a big problem in-game. Then again, it does have a burst cannon

What I'm really hoping for is more auxiliaries or at least some rules for them; hopefully they'll be in the second wave. With the new allies rules though, this is probably not necessary.

I don't really care what they did with the models - when it comes down to it - I am going to paint them in my Raver theme and blow some holes in other armies. When it comes down to it - the look is 'nice', but when playing an army, I play it cause I like the idea of them (i likka da pewpew). As for cost - meh...it's a business and they want to make money. If I don't like the cost - I would go play GKs. The other thing is I am not one to buy huge orders at a time. I make a list at a point level, get those models, play, refine, then move up in points... I do know that I like the huge suit and it will be nice to field the bomber....all assuming that they are worth their point costs... EDIT: Also - I just checked it ouyt - the Shadowsun hunter cadre is the same as buying all the models included with a 10$ discount (for USA). And for once - of all the bundles - it looks like it is actually a pretty good force, a little troop light, but hey - they are inexpensive.... And who runs kroot anyway?

I think the new models look fantastic. Love the Cadre Fireblade. I'll probably be getting one of those even though I don't play 40k. Multi-Part plastic Pathfinder kits?? Sounds like a dream. I just wish there was more models coming out. More alien Allien allies, the vespids really need a touch up, and the Kroot need more units. I know someone who wants to play an all kroot list but there's not enough models.

Nope, still not convinced it should be 50 dollars. But I don't think the SM Dreads should be over $35-$40, either, or the new Firewarrior character be priced at more than $15. So in light of the recent leaks/rumors I will probably field the following army with the new codex:
- Shadowsun
- 3x9 Stealth Suits with 3 Fusion Blasters in each
- 3x10 Fire Warriors with Markerlights
- 2x6 (3x2?) Missilesides with Skyfire
- Aegis Defence Line
Game plan: kite everything to death! I did nothing like this before (I ran a Crisis/ FW/ BS gunline), so I'm looking forward to try it out.

Well, technically you do. The rulebook and a Codex is over 100 dollars, and then you still need to buy at least two boxes of figures for Troops and at least a single figure HQ (that is 15-20 dollars alone) to play a game.
Wargaming is nowhere near cheap. But, admittedly, that's the nature of the beast.
I still think that the Pathfinders are the only reasonably priced new release for the Tau. Crisis suits are affordable, if you go by what each suit would be separately. But like Wraithlords, I don;t like the requirement to buy the entire box when I might only need one more to add to what I have.

Wait! There's more! Not only we will give you one price increase now... we will give you one in JUNE!... because GW Woves you!!!.
But in seriousness, I'll wait and see how the synergy of the game mechanics in the codex meshes with 6th Ed rule set before passing judgement. It is not about price for me, it is about spending money on an army that is going to get their collective bootie handed to them in game(if the codex is flawed in its synergy). They should make a good detachment though.

Am i the only one who likes the new Tau stuff? The broadsides and riptide, from the 360 images look like they'll be fantastic to build and paint. Especially being able to bend the knees for poses without having to saw off the lower leg and greenstuff the detail back on. (I'm looking at you converted shas'o climbing over a wall and bodyguard knelt down in a firing position!) Pre-ordered a couple of the broadsides, so i'll have two squads of two, one squad being the forgeworld ones i already have and the other being the new ones. looks like i'll be selling my old broadsides, as i always felt that they looked a bit underwelming and klunky.
The new commander looks pretty good and it's nice to see the HQ get a model of it's own, but until i get my hands on the codex to make a new army list i don't know if i'll need a second commander; as my converted one will always be my warlord. The only model that i'm not that enthusiastic about is the flyer. It's a nice model and can see that they went with a similar look to the piranha, but i honestly thought it would look different.
The riptide being an elite choice is an interesting option, as i play with a crisis heavy army it'll compete for slots (no vehicles at all apart from tetras for those lovely H4 markerlights). Although if it's still possible with the new codex, i could put suits as bodyguards for my HQ to free up a couple of slots for riptides. In fact, the only reason why i've only pre-ordered two broadsides and the codex is because i don't know how my new list will be structured. For all i know there will be a way to make crisis suits troop choices, in which case there will be PLENTY of space for riptides in elites. I will however have to wait until i get the new codex.
As for the 'how expensive is your hobby' discussion. Yes it's expensive, but compared to some other hobbies it's quite well valued. Take pc gaming as a hobby for example, to start from scratch you need to buy a lot. The pc for a decent rig would be at minimum £400, then you need a mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor, internet connection (not required but in this day and age it's very much part of gaming) and let's not forget the games themselves. The value also comes from how well what you buy ages, pcs get outdated as new tech is made. I can't imagine using the pc i had five years ago for all the stuff i used my new pc for now.
Minitures on the otherhand have the advantage of becoming collectors items when new versions are made and retain or go up in value; even more so as older models can still be used in games. The old 2nd edition hive tyrants for example are brilliant models to represent tyranid primes, still looking to get a second one myself as they're easy to convert with newer biomorphs.

The PC comparison is terrible since a computer offers a lot of other benefits and can even be considered a tax write off since it counts as business and educational expenses if you're a student or have a job that is aided by online usage. It's also able to go across genres for games, and can hold a collection of music, videos, and pictures as well as editing software.
The only way the comparison works is if Gamesworkshop sold a 3D printer that also stored all the books, codex, and even painting supplies while also helping you paint the models and convert them. Then it'd would also have to let you use your models to play Warmachine, Dystopian Wars, and any other table top game.
You could only compare it to a single game, which will cost you about the price of one box of models depending on how new it is, and still provide hours of entertainment at your own leisure. The only comparable game I could imagine would be World of Warcraft's amazingly addictive "You bought the game and expansions, but keep paying us monthly" engine which manages to take in a lot of time and effort (haven't played it myself).
And PC games tend to patch their errors, as opposed to GW's policy to make a crap unit and leave it that way until a new edition rolls around. Like how Stealth Suits will most likely never see table time this codex.

I see where you are coming from, a pc has the utility to be used for an ever increasing number of things, while models have their very specific niche. The point i was trying to get across was that i feel that the model costs are justified as they hold their value better when compared to a pc used for gaming. Then again if you use the same pc to make money... Yeah bad comparison, i should stop trying to do these explainations in the early hours of the morning.
A better way for me to have explained it would be to not campare it to anything and just say why i feel the cost of the models if justified. So yeah, for me at least i don't find the costs to be unjustified, as they hold their value well over time through being collectors items. When i refine my army lists to the themes i give them, i usually find that i have some models that i don't need anymore, which i then sell through ebay. I find through personal experience (this i won't argue, differs greatly from person to person) that models in decent condition have a fair chance to sell at around about half their value. Which for me is a great return considering the use i've got out of them over the years. Now if they are out of production, unbuilt and/or painted to a high standard (none of what i've sold bar anything unbuilt, i'm just too sentimental as i like to hang on to anything oop or well painted), the value can go above what you paid for it. I was amazed to see what some of the older oop models can go for when i was searching through ebay.
Hope i explained my opinion on GWs model pricing better this time. Yes it's expensive, but in my opinion not too expensive.

AAAAHHH!!!
I had an insane day last weekend. I woke up early to find an email in my inbox with a huge crisis suit as the feature for the next white dwarf. I flipped out, showered and ran to my computer.
I have just recently started playing warhammer 40k, and I got into it mostly because the Tau looked so amazing, I found their lore fun and a friend was stopping playing so I could scoop a lot of his stuff for really cheap.
A little while after starting to model (I was doing 100% Tau), i picked up an old rule book, and headed to the store to learn how to play. Man that was a sad day. I have literally played one game since I started because of how crappy the Tau were in combat.
So understandably, I'm extremely pumped. I really hope there are a lot of buffs in general.
While i'm not CRAZY stoked for the new units, I think they're needed. A flyer, a bigass crisis suit. honestly, i was hoping for some type of badass Kroot thing. Like some new mutation of the Kroot gene.

While yes they are getting better they aren't going to be the next SM army on the block with an Auto-Win set up or any super deathstars or anything like that(at least i hope anyways) You may wanna brush up on some Tau tactics from this Codex in the meantime before the new one comes out TheKoop because chances are you are going to have similar problems playing them with the new codex

Just from what little I have gleaned from the leaked Spanish codex stuff, Tau will still play the way they have always played, you have to use them as army as a whole, not rely on a single or spamable unit to win the day.
All the assets will have to work with each other, and versatile, flexible firepower will be the order of the day, but we still have to dig into the codex to truly start devising our Kauyon, and Mont'ka with the new tools.
But itsa lookin good!

Tau have never been crappy, though. Sure, they're not the easiest army to play with, but if you work your Pathfinders, XV8s, and Firewarriors the right way, you can have a devistating army. Hell, I've given "superior" armies a run for their money several times...but it's always been a challenge. I will say, I'm interested to see the rules, but I don't plan on buying/expanding my army by very much.
