There's another thread talking about this, it's quietly dropped off the first page, its a really fun game, I've been playing in my very small off time the last few days.

I would recommend it, I traded off HeroQuest and while I was sad to see it go I'm happy I now have WarhammerQuest on a mobile platform.

Shame it doesn't work on the iPad 1...

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

yeah,
I'll repeat myself in this thread The game itself is brilliant. I love it!

But In App Purchases are expensive!
Extra characters are £2 each.
Extra levels are £3 ( Introduces Skaven )

...

You can select up to 4 characters each time you go on a quest.

So before every single dungeon you get these IAP characters waved in your face... every single time.
£2 for a digital character seems incredibly greedy to me, I've refused to buy them, So I'm stuck with the basic 4 dudes.

Panic...

What about the other in app purchases? Is it possible to play the game without spending extra? I know some games you get heavily penalised if you don't buy extra gold or what have you.

All my characters are at Level 3 and there hasn't been any situation so far where i've needed more gold than I had already, and there are plenty of non-main quests you can go on to earn more/get items to sell. The in-app characters are annoying, but you don't need them as you can only have four in a party at once, and to be honest, I won't mind paying for the expansion quests.. In the past I used to pay £20 for an add-on to a game like Red Alert, for a few units and missions, so £2.99 is a lot more palatable.

there is IAP gold to buy but I don't think you need it.
There are expensive items to buy but you can save up and buy them like you do in most RPGs... you get gold every time you clear a room of monsters and a reward when you complete a mission.

To shed some light on it. I'm currently holding 2366 gold.

The best sword in the market I'm looking at costs 2500gold
A helmet costs 1600gold, chain mail 900gold ... a ring of strength is 1400gold
bandages cost 30gold, bread 10gold.

So I can go earn more gold and get that sword... or I can cheat and buy some IAP gold and get everything at the market.

Also Levelling up (training) a characters requires both gold and experience.
To train my warrior from level 3 to Level4 - I needed 8000exp and 600gold.

In my opinion you don't need to buy gold to get through this game, but it would make it quicker and easier.

So, for someone who never played the original game and isn't a huge fan of dungeon crawling in general, is this game SO GOOD that its worth purchasing? I'm always looking for good ipad games to pass the time, and the video of this makes the game look really, really polished, but the real question I have is if there is tactical depth to the gameplay, or whether its mainly just about killing enough stuff to get buy better gear to be able to beat badder enemies, etc, etc, etc.

In other words, how much tactics is there in each individual dungeon vs. just RPG leveling your way to victory?

The tactics are fairly limited and obvious.
Trying to use your small gang of warriors in defensive positions to reduce the effect of the enemies greater numbers.

The game is all about the random dice and collecting gold, and has I've seen a fair few comments about it lacking any great tactics.

It is pretty much dungeon farming for gold and exp. but it's still fun.
In 30+ dungeons, the dungeons have beat me twice...
The first defeat was my own fault for running the Warrior out on his own, The second time I felt it was the dice gods. lots of misses and no winds of magic...

It's a pitty the IAP characters are so ridiculously expensive as they are probably the only real way to spice up tactics.

As is I'd rate the game 3/5 stars as good old warhammer quest on a tablet, ruined by IAP.
Without the IAP I'd have given it 4 or 5 stars.

You don't need to buy anything in game. I'm doing fine gold wise (even bought a 3500 weapon). I bought the archmage to give him a go but you could easily just use the starting four.

It's pretty dumbed down then the actual board game. (I played HeroQuest once)

You basically go into to the dungeon, kill everything, and get some gold and items after each fight. You can choose one of three to four missions to do per town but can re do them as many times as you like(I'm not sure if the actual lay out changes each time), There are a few story missions but are really just like the regular kill the boss or get the item missions.

I would have been nice to be able to search rooms and things like that but its mostly a wipe out the dungeon and then go to town and sell your spoils kind of game. For what it is though I think it's really fun, and I have played for a couple hours now since I bought it a few days ago. I think it's reasonably priced and I personally bought the troll slayer pack since I figured the game was going to be a lot more money anyway and figured oh well what's 8 bucks when I thought it was going to be 10.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also thought I would add that you do not need to purchase any in game stuff. I have around 15,000 gold just from selling the stuff I don't use that you get from fights.

Picked up the game last week and after a few dungeons also purchased the three additional classes and the Skaven pack.

I have been finding the Warrier Priest the weakest of the characters so far, his spell casting ability is very poor and he is constantly missing with his attacks for me (around 25% hit rate and that's with a hit increasing ring and abilities).

Have completed the bulk of the Orc themed content (except the final mission) and have now ventured to the Skaven area to level up a little before heading back to it. I have found the Skaven dungeon style and tactic changes interesting after so long against beasts and green skins.

Would definitely recommend the game. I am hoping they continue to support as would like to see the other classes turn up (specifically the witch hunter which was my character of choice when the original game was released) and some more character packs. Would also be interested in them releasing to two story focused expansions (I remember the Orc one coming with a Orc warlord, goblin lantern carrier side kick and pet guard squig).

Great game. You don't need to worry about IAP, it's not needed at all unless you're desperate to play as one of the other three classes.

Recommend it!

Yeah, IAP stuff not needed at all unless you want it, and it only feels like there's a gold shortage at that start because you're spanking little critters, I've spent over 10k gold on items in addition to having paid for 1 L6 characer and got the other 6 to L5, 100% funded through dungeon-crawling (about 19 hours worth since it was released).

Tactics-wise it's fairly basic, but then WHQ itself was a fairly straight-forward dungeon romp if you played it without a GM.

(My "first pick" for quests is Marauder, Waywatcher, Wizard, Archmage).

The best weapons and armor are found in dungeons as quest rewards. They are several factors better than what you can buy. Especially since you know what major item you will get before you start the quest. Since quests are "Ancient item of great power is at dungeon X. Go clear the dungeon to get it" times three to four dungeons.

I have purchased the Troll slayer and the Priest because I wanted an all melee group.

The priest has almost no HP. It's really sad how easily he dies but his buffs (+to hit, +to dodge, +Str, +Toughness, extra turn) are great. His ring is stupid but it is the only non-magic healing thing I can find. It's basically, roll a d6, on a 1 deal 2 damage to every friendly player in B2B, on a 2-4, do nothing, on a 5-6 heal 4-10 HP on one friendly B2B character (or something to that affect).

The troll slayer is a harry ball of naked awesomeness. He hits hard but has only a few attacks. He also has a lot of HP.

That being said, the Marauder is the best fighter by far. He has the best ratio for attacks, HP, and WS and has the most customization and weapons option. The only draw back is when he goes crazy and attacks the team.

I only play hard core mode and have really only had my priest die. That being said, the level up bonuses are random so if you play through again, each character will have a different play style. Also, in HC mode if the ring kills a guy out of combat then it is dead forever. Where as in combat, if a guy dies and you can kill all the enemy before the round is over, he pops back up and is alive again. This has saved my ass a time or two.

I bought the lot as I couldn't be sure the rural location is was heading to would have sufficient wifi to download stuff if I wanted it, so twelve quid all in. I don't know if that's allot as I'm pretty new to app games but fr the enjoyment of playing WQ on the drive down and the first day I'm more than happy with the cost.

The game is pretty and the interface is quite straight forward. I find myself wanting bigger rooms to allow movement to be more important but I'm only a few quests in so could change.

TLDR; buy it, it's fun.

That's a damn shame, because the game looks so pretty. It sounds fairly awesome for someone who is really into dungeon-crawls (that's not me), but I guess I'll just have to wait for the equally awesome looking Space Hulk game that's coming out to get my hardcore strategy fix on my ipad...that and X-Com whenever that finally comes out on iOS.

Runnin up on ya.

I'll pass on an app that costs $4.99 and you have to pay $3/each to unlock characters and for further quests. Read one review that said they paid for extra gold, went to town and a random event took half of it. Yeah, they're not going to get my money; if you're going to nickel and dime me, there are tons of "free" games out there.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do
