They were okay before this book. Malekith might have decreed that male magic users should be put to death because reasons--that did not mean that they did not exist nor that the other Houses did not use them.
Indeed. I still have, and use (when Malekith isn't in the army) one of the old male DE sorcerers.
Ok so I have the book now
The Prophecy is still in and Malkeith still bans male Sorcerers - "by the generous bounties Malkeith offers for such a being's severed head" but there are some still in hidding at the bidding of Noble houses who would "rather risk the Witch Kings wrath than incur a debt to the Covent of Sorcereress" (ie Morathi, who now spends most of her time in her own City rather than sharing a bedroom with her son..............)
Doomfire Warlocks came about as direct result of the Prophecy - Malkeith cursed them so now they are pretty much Dark Eldar - complete with feeding slaanesh with souls to keep themselves alive.
Now all this stuff about Slaanesh automatically eating all Elves Souls unless they are safely stored in Waystones etc or stolen by the "Trickster God or the Queen of the Underworld" - I don't recall this ever being in Fantasy before only 40K??
Sisters of Slaughter = Wyches in all respects - including many of their rules (4+ ward in close combat) - in fact I wish Wyches had all of them - ie WS6 and bonuses against Higher WS/S Opponents ...........

Aye, but that was mostly hinting that Morathi had a deal with him, not running in fear.
I haven't read the new background in depth yet, hopefully nothing too drastic awaits me. Although I felt the info on the Har Ganeth Death Night was the most graphic thing I'd read in a GW book in years.
That isn't a complaint btw, just an observation.

Saw them at the store today, didn't look like anyone had really bought much other than the army book. Still can't believe a box of ten infantry is $60 now and I saw it in person. It used to be funny how every year the prices would rise to ever-increasing heights of stupidity and you'd think it couldn't possibly get worse, but now it's just sad. Things really are getting to the level where "the Hobby" seems to be reserved for the wealthy elite and everyone else need not apply. There's no reason I can see why these models should be so fething expensive other than "Because we can."
But I guess that all goes without saying. Almost felt tempted to buy a hydra just because I used to like Dark Elves and didn't think the new kit was that bad, but when I noticed it too had cartoony, sculpted-on blood I ended up passing on it.

Black Library authors went to a lot of trouble to switch the Cults of Pleasure in Ulthuan from being Slaanesh Cults to Cults dedicated to the Elves own dark gods. The elves did not birth Slaanesh like the Eldar did. It makes no sense...

I'm surprised GW even put pictures of them in the book if they weren't coming out immediately with the book's release. They usually don't do that.

What authors did that?
The Cults of Pleasure and/or Excess(talked about as two different things) are depicted as being distinct from those worshiping the Elves' dark gods.
William King has the waystone thing in "Blood of Aenarion", where a Daemon starts 'eating' souls from within a waystone.
Also worth noting that Warhammer Armies: High Elves has on page 7, under the heading "The Elven Races" a blurb talking about how Elves can fall to Slaanesh. Suggest you read it.

Indeed. Surprised the hell out of me seeing the new chariots, Executioners, Black Guard, Dark Riders, and Fleetmaster.
Hopefully they come out soon though. Regiments of Renown(small scale games, max 20 models and a 100 point 'warband') is starting locally and a few Executioners or Dark Riders would not go amiss.

I really like the Black Ark Fleetmaster. Yes, I may even like it more because of the highly-impractical and goofy looking peg leg.
I'm tempted to get one to paint and one to convert into some for 40k. I like the model that much.

That is the first I heard of Slaanesh eating elf souls in WHFB. Heck, I still have an old WD where it talked about Slaanesh being the primary god worshiped by the Dark Elves initially, but be displaced by Khaine worshipers.
Agree, God dammit Ward......
@Kendoka: Is there scale creep? It seems a bit deceptive given they are on rocks. The one on the bottom row seems to be at the same height as the other figs. Still thanks for the comparisons.
For those wondering with the Ice Witch, that was sculpted by Chris Fitzpatrick who sculpted the old 5th/6th ed Dark Elves. She fits perfectly into that line.
Now only if Fitz would get around to sculpting the Ice Maidens..........
*edit* Just to add further, played the army yesterday with my Beastmen. Will say the cauldron is GOOD! The player ran it in a horde of Corsairs and I watched it kill a Hoard of Gors. Re-roll hits and re-roll wounds is nasty. The other player didn't try many of the new units since he didn't have equivalent models for it. Shroud of Despair is huge and is going to be the spell that I need to stop each time.

After looking at the book, I'm pretty happy with it. Some good stuff, some meh stuff, but at least nothing like the absurd banner from high elves. Cauldron is very powerful, but offset by the fact that it must be a character mount and is relying on a 4+ ward (only 6+ armor) to stay alive. Similarly, Sisters of Slaughter seem quite good, but being a rare choice, expensive points-wise, and lacking a save brings it into line.
New beastie (the other one from the hydra kit) seems meh to me, its nasty offensively but lacks much in the way of defense.
Hellbron seems like the biggest glass cannon in the game, a T3, no-save model with ASF, Poison, Reroll 1s to wound, and 7+d3 attacks (assuming she still has frenzy) hitting at WS7, S10, I9.
Malekith is a pretty good buy imo, but again suffers from defensive weakness, having a 4+ armor (not mounted) and a 2+ ward that only works against non-magical.
Dark magic seems balanced out except for the 4th spell, shroud of despair. Hitting every enemy within 12" to deny general ld and bsb rerolls would be fine, but tossing in the part where when any of those units fails any leadership test all of them get a cumulative -1 to ld until the spell ends pushes it over the edge, at least for casting on a 10+.

In other words she hasn't changed a bit... aside from loosing Eternal Hatred and gaining ASF and Murderous Prowess.
Hellebron has always been the ultimate glass cannon. She can be devastating in a challenge... but if she doesn't kill her target immediately she is dead when he swings back.

Logged onto the GW website looking for some Epic: Space Marine figs that I need to round out my army..... (fail)
Oh cool, new Dark Elves. Let's see what the Witches are about, I don't have any of those.....
*looks at price of $60 / 10 plastic figures*
-_- . Seriously GW? I'm glad my Druchii army is pretty robust already (sitting in glass cabinets in the US, but anyways....).
I'll just pass on all of this madness. I'll increasingly rely on Mantic and Reaper for any fantasy 28mm purchases, and GHQ for any 6mm stuff. Which isn't hard, I haven't given GW any of my money in ~ 3 years since I bought two copies of Island of Blood or whatever the Warhammer boxed set was called.

Do any online retailers sell Croc games' stuff? I'd like to get a couple, but the postage makes it prohibitive to get just a couple of figures direct, while I'd happily add them to a bunch of other gaming products in an order from a retailer. Even UK online retailers would probably work.
