These ones seem to have odd proportions to me, the heads are almost GW-esque heroic oversized compared to the bodies, the hands are large and the legs are too short
All those linked seem like they have short legs and the heads seem off on some. I dunno about proper military gear... but so far I prefer the MA soldiers.

Everyone has different tastes, but the Mantic sculpts are not better. When you add in lack of the correct gear and weapons you need for real organizations (real squad has 2 SAWs, M240s at platoon level, and so on) the Mantic ones may make nice Imperial Guard for you, but they are NOT going to be good US Army or Marines compared to their competition. Again, okay for a board game, they really don't cut it as mre than cartoonish versions of US troops.
It may just be a matter of taste, as to which one anyone finds preffable. But I definitely like the proportions of the MA miniatures better. For their height relative to their head size is closer to normal 5 1/2-6 heads as opposed to 5.
I'm not sure how well that translates at table top distance, though.

Yeah I'm not gonna lie. When people said there were alternatives to the MA soldiers I took their word for it. And while I'm not trying to say that the MA soldiers are 'the beest soldars evur!', I 'm not sure I could get through painting even one of those other variants. I just don't like them at all. I'm more interested in the martians myself (got a lot of corporation marines), but the soldiers will get painted for sure.

I was this close to jacking up my pledge over the weekend, but $325 worth of add-ons seems like an awful lot of stuff for a casual, beer-and-pretzels game like this is supposed to be.
I'm familiar with the modern soldier alternatives... basically, it's a very under-served area of the market.
Most people want WW2 or before, so that's what all the big historical companies make (good hard plastic sculpts anyway).
The MA ones aren't technically accurate but unless you're playing a historical/military buff it's unlikely to matter.
Also, the could be very useful for near-future wargaming... stuff based in the IRL world without much in the way of fantastical elements, just more advanced weaponry.. similar to that game that Mongoose made that was set in the mid 21st century.
You could use them as a faction in a game about WW3. Unless you're specifically doing iraq/ afghanistan games there's going to be an element of fiction or "set in the near future" involved anyway with use of the MA soldiers as moderns.

Bear in mind that these manufacturers make truescale 28mm. So signisifcantly smaller than the GW scale people are used to. I mean, they're not at the level of Infinity figures, but they're the best moderns out there today.
All I know is Mars Attacks is giving me generic affordable soldiers that look as close enough to being accurate for my tastes as it really isn't an issue.
They will also most certainly be seeing action in all sorts of unsavory theaters. It will also probably involve them overwhelmed with zombies.
I've also got a good excuse to try out those Flying Lead rules I downloaded and printed, and subsequently lost, and printed again, and found the first set. Oh well.
Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!
I think that as is the habit these days - the early birds got snapped up immediately - especially so with the tiered early birds. A lot of those then "upgraded" to the comic-con level, probably along with those who were on the fence like myself. Kinda leaves whatever "early birds" that are left hanging there, to be picked up kinda whenever.
Really like some of the poses on those guys above! Although the Mantic infantry are cool as well, I'm sure they will be available cheaply and in bulk (with perhaps a few extra options) by the end of the KS.
Though we're drifting onto a bit of an off-topic tangent, so I'll leave it with this pic. I'm sure the MA plastics will make fine IG proxies.
Not sure they fit with the aesthetic of 40k - might possibly as some kind of random world being attacked by the Great Crusade or something, but even then don't think the real-life style fits with the science-fantasy of 40k.
Between Black Scorpion and Empress miniatures for Moderns.
I'm really liking the add ons, and would really like to know if the painter of the Mars Attacks stuff has a demo blog, or a painting tutorial somewhere.
I for one also would throw down that Last night On Earth has a good batch of figures that would go great with the game here. Jonesing a add in that lets you put your own characters together.
Holding out for the Giant Robots, but Plasticville is well on its way to getting scrabbled together. The board will more then likely do double duty for zombie games as well.
At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Yes I think so, those all follow a design concept of fantastical/historical tropes - these would jar with whatever else is on the table, in the sense that they are recognisably similar to what we have in real life, and not immediately identifiable as being part of a fantasy world.

They're just nice and generic army/ security forces guys to use for any gaming system really. Not one for more serious gaming, but then I don't think anything from this Kickstarter is.
As people have said, they'd be great in zombie games, modern horror, sci-fi based in the modern world.. anything else that's very loosely based around the modern day but doesn't need to take it seriously.
Could even do a wargame based on monster vs. aliens.. US army.. check.. big stompy robots and flying saucers.. check... gribbly aliens, check. Throw in a ginormica action figure and some skyscrapers and you're all set. :p
Same goes for the terrain... it's technically inaccurate for modern buildings (with the connectors and square block layouts and lack of internal rubble and such) and you should buy model railroad instead for technical accuracy, but for your typical wargame that's not going to matter, it's just something to throw down on the board and get playing with.
I don't plan on painting *anything* from this Kickstarter. Pure Board Game.
Whereas with Deadzone that is more of a serious wargaming system as opposed to this which is more of a bit of random fun that can get non-wargamers interested. One of the core rules of the game is that the martians have to capture wandering animals to gain victory points.
The rules are stripped right down and are very straightforward... anything even slightly complex is put on a card so you only deal with it when the card is drawn.

It would be nice if a Mars Attack 'squad' of troops had the right weapon mix to use as a real US squad though.
Squad leader with M4
2 fire teams each
- Team leader with M4
- SAW gunner with M249
- Grenadier with M203 (or newer M320)
- Rifleman/AT specialist with M4 and AT-4
Add in a marksman guy with your choice of sniper rifle and maybe a M240 gunner with ammo bearer.
Mantic would make a lot of modern/near future gamers happy with a mix of troops that allowed a typical squad.
Currently no SAWs, too many M203s.

Winterdyne is a Commission Painter in Nottingham ("Maz"?). Mantic used commission painters a lot, including Golem Painting Studio too in the past (though not recently?).

Well crap. here I was planning to limit myself to just getting a UFO or some rubble, but then this goes up. How am I supposed to resist the allure of a hot dog cart? Well, I guess my pledge is goint to get an increase.
Wahey, since we’re nearly half way to achieving Esteban, we thought it was time to get out another stretch goal as we head towards the big bot himself. You know which milestone he’s coming at…
Firstly though, we’re going to talk a little bit about scenery! As anyone who has read-through the playtest rules and watched the gameplay video will have seen, scenery – in particularly cover – is pretty important in Mars Attacks.
With the Ruined Scenery, there are plenty of bits of wall and rubble to hide behind as well as bits that will completely cover your models, breaking an enemy's line of sight – particularly handy if your hero is injured or you’ve got precious cargo to protect… The scenery you’ve seen in the photography is work in progress at the moment and we’ve got some close-ups of the renders to show – again, work in progress:
We plan on filling the gap on the right hand side with rubble piles that act as additional cover for your figures. There will also be connectors to attach the tiles together and to cover the holes, ranging from hanging baskets to street signs – even a fuse box (perhaps a drain pipe?). Ideas for connectors you'd like to see in the comments please!
Many of you have asked questions about how much scenery you'll be getting with your game so here is some clarification:
- Mars Attacks: The Miniatures Game includes 2 lots of the above Scenery Sprue, plus connectors and a set of Urban Accessories.
- Mars Attacks: Escalation includes 2 lots of the above Scenery Sprue, plus connectors.
If you want additional scenery, we also offer a Standard Pack and a Deluxe Pack:
The Standard Pack contains 4 lots of the above Scenery Sprue, plus connectors.
The Deluxe Pack contains 8 lots of the above Scenery Sprue, plus connectors and a set of Urban Accessories.
You can get these either as part of the credit included with pledges of The Will of Man ($100) and up, or by raising your pledge by the appropriate amounts.
But scenery has more than just gameplay implications however – it helps you immerse yourself in the game world, giving it a third dimension, and we want to take this further by introducing new types of scenery and accessories.
And this moves us on neatly to our next stretch goal…
Antenociti’s Workshop are the producers of high-quality resin scenery accessories and, if we hit this stretch goal, we will commission them to produce a range of modern Suburban Accessories for use with your Mars Attacks games!
From decorating your battlefield to producing cover for your figures, Antenociti will create a range of street-side accessories and damaged vehicles from concept to actual resin production. The first of these to be produced are the two sets shown below.
As these scenery pieces are produced in high quality resin by Antenociti, we will put make these scenery pieces available as Pledge Boosters – add them onto your pledge now and help us bust through this stretch goal!

Pledge Boosters are special add-ons that you can raise your pledge to get.
These are different from Core Add-ons (we can only offer things we make or get a special deal on, like the Exclusive Topps Cards and the amazing Deluxe Gaming Mat, as Core Add-ons) in that you can’t use your credit on them.
To add a Pledge Booster, click Manage My Pledge in the top right corner. On the next screen, enter the total value for everything you want. For example, if you’re at The Invaders Arrive ($150) and you want the Sidewalk Slaughter Suburban Accessories Pack ($25), you add them together and enter $125 as your pledge.
I like that Mantic seem to be partnering up with Antenociti's Workshop for a lot of terrain accessories. Everything from AW screams quality and their Sci-Fi vehicles seem like a perfect fit the Warpath universe.

At the moment I only really want the Police Box from that set and it isn't worth it when you take into account shipping.
